After meeting up with Lt. Scott, the large squad of men accompanied by
the two female survivors continued on to main engineering.
One by one the group exited the Jeffry's tube and formed up along a
darkened hallway. Private Jones was on point but had stopped and was
looking at his tricorder.
Williams noticed the hold up and quickly made his way up to Jones'
location, "What is it? ", he said quietly.
"I've got some strange readings coming from up ahead", Jones whispered
back to Williams. "At least 40 or more Xchi are converging on
engineering".
Gary frowned a bit. "Any sign of the majors team?" he asked looking
over Jones's shoulder.
"I read about a dozen bio signs in that direction', Jones pointed down
the hall. "Most likely humanoid. Cant tell for sure, there is too much
interference."
Gary nodded, "And which way are the X'chi coming from?" he asked.
Jones pointed in the opposite direction. "Every direction. Looks like
they might be converging on the dozen bio signs."
Gary sat down behind Jones and pulled out a pad. He tapped on it and pulled
up a map of a standard Nova class ship and looked over the deck
layout. "Hrm.. If the bio signs are there, and we are." Gary looked up
to read the hall designator on the wall, "Here. Then we could get to
them by going this way." He muttered to himself.
Gary tapped Jones on the shoulder, "Ok how is this." He lifted the pad
over Jones' shoulder to show him the path. "If we go this direction,
we can get to this junction just about the time the X'chi get there."
He pointed to an intersection not far form main engineering where the
X'chi could out flank The dozen bio signs. "If we get there we will
have a clear shooting alley to the main corridor that leads to main
engineering. If we are lucky, we can kill a few of those things and
pull a few of them off the main attack. And since this intersection
and the one at the main corridor are the only two ways to the bio
signs, we could then pull back to them , covering their flank the
entire time." He rambled on in a whisper.
Gary then signalled for the group to keep moving and they continued
down the corridor towards Main Engineering at a light run. He
wrinkled his face as the team passed another pile of feces. This one
was even bigger than the others. Glancing over at Anderson he noticed
he looked like he was about to throw up.
A few more metres and they had reached the ambush spot. The
intersection was perfect, debris and trash was piled all around and
the marines quickly began setting up cover positions. Lt. Scott who
assumed personally responsibility for the two women's safety took them
to the rear of the line with Anderson.
"Alright the objective is to get the bugs attention", Gary said while
knocking out the lights that were illuminating the hallway with the
butt of his rifle, "Once we've got their attention we're going to need
to push back into Walsh's line." The marines nodded and prepared
there weapons.
No more than a few seconds later the first bunch of Xchi started
piling into the intersection. Waiting until the last possible
moment, the team then opened fire catching the first wave by complete
surprise. And after a minute of concentrated phaser fire there wasn't
much left of the rest of them, their remains littering the floor.
Suddenly phaser fire started erupting from up ahead causing Gary to
jump to his feet. "Alright lets move", he then yelled back to the
rest of the team, "But watch what you shoot, that's Walsh's team up
there".
Quickly and smartly the ODA team came up behind another group of Xchi
and before they knew what was happening had blow them into pieces.
Thrusting his way through the Xchi carcasses now acting as a roadblock
Williams was the first around the corner. What he saw astonished him
and he immediately started firing his weapon into what seemed to be a
blob of bugs. There was so many that it was hard to distinguish them
apart, a claw here a head here a leg there. It was all the same to
him and as more of his team rounded the corner, more dead bugs started
falling to the ground.
The Xchi were definitely caught off guard, it was as if they couldn't
comprehend that they were being attacked from behind and by the time
they realized they were being shot at it was too late.
