MaiKai was asked to go work in the Temporary Sickbay on one of the
decks because there was a need for more assistance. She didn't mind. It gives
her a break from the usual day in and day out routine. The patients she's
working with in the temporary sickbay are the patients that were affected by the
temporal anomaly. It caused the person to age; for example: being about
twenty-one years old to all of a sudden being in their eighties.
Mai was helping a patient who had worked in engineering. Apparently
they were from the same part of Hawaii MaiKai was from. The patient's name was
Ligano Miliane. He was a mechanic in Honolulu and for part time, or extra
money, he would work for the tourist's company. Mai helped him drink his water
and gave him a hypospray to relieve his headache. "God the beach was
wonderful and the waves ... man weren't they something. Miss, don't you ever miss
that beach or your home in Hawaii?"
Quiocho was thinking about the beach while the man was talking. The
beach was lovely. Mai would go surfing whenever she wasn't volunteering at the
hospital. She shook her head to snap out of it as she heard a question.
"What was that? Oh, Hawaii? No, I don't miss it. I mean I have family there
that I would like to her from more often, but can't say I really long to go
back." Her voice trailed off. She really wasn't a talker let alone a 'people'
person.
The aging man seemed disappointed and frowned in his discontent.
"Why? Most Hawaiians don't even leave Hawaii unless they are with their family.
You know very well that family is all we have. It is very important to our
people. It seems unusual that you stand here before me here." MaiKai looked up
into the engineers face. She thought for a moment then spoke: Sir, I don't
believe you know everything that goes on in Hawaii nor am I willing to discuss
it. Why I left and why am I here seems to be of no importance at this moment.
Now do you need another glass of water or something to eat?"
Ligano shook his head and then attempted to roll over in the biobed by
himself. {Geez ... I'm not that trivial ...} MaiKai had come to terms why
she left. She couldn't take much more of her parents or anyone. She was sick
of everything and nothing to live for. Now she has run away to be on the
Chimera to escape from it all and to do at least some good somewhere. Well, that
conversation might have made Mai's day a bad day. However, she decided when
it came time for lunch maybe she could talk with Cprl. Stan Pressman.
