*** Sickbay * USS Chimera ***
"All hands to alert stations. Repeat, all hands to alert station. Standby for temporal incursion. Sickbay, prepare for casualties."
Samantha Palmers voice came clearly through the ships comm.
Rangi saw Scott lean forward to kiss Mercedes cheek quickly before he turned away, hurrying to his station.
She began to walk swiftly across sickbay and wasnt quite half waywhen her commbadge 'chirruped'
"Guzman to Summers"
+TAPS+ Summers here Commander + she replied, relieved to hear his voice at last.
"Rangi, we will enter the anomaly is less the 5 minutes. I need you and your FULL staff to be on duty. Watch for side effects when we will pass the anomaly. When we will pass it, I need a crew able to follow my orders, not a bunch a half dead dwarfs. Inject us with whatever medical shit you think is needed, but I need it to work"
His tone and words both took her by surprise.
"I ... I'm not sure ..." she started to say, thinking that his request was 'unusual' to say the least.
Shane interrupted her:
"Just do it, DO it now" and he cut off the communication.
{What on Earth's wrong?}she wondered, glancing back the way she had come.{..and ...'medical shit'?...right!}
Convinced now that something or someone had seriously annoyed him between leaving sickbay and arriving on the Bridge, she formed a plan as she hurried to her office but as she neared the door she slowed suddenly.
It was as though a cold chill spread over her body beginning at her feet and travelling quickly across her skin, causing her to catch her breath and shiver in an icy grasp.
It was an unpleasant sensation but almost as soon as it began, it was gone.
Moments later, the feeling dismissed, Rangi tapped the console on her desk contacting the medical technician.
"Yes ma'am?" Sally Schuman responded immediately.
"Sally...listen carefully. I'm going to release ADTH through environmental control systems. I want you to monitor it."
"ADTH?"
"Yes. Commander Guzman has requested a.....stimulant for all the crew." It was the nearest thing that Rangi could think of that satisfied Shanes orders.
"ADTH?" came the repeated query.
"Yes!" Rangi replied shortly tapping in the authorisation codes to allow major changes in the life support systems."Shipwide. Five parts per million."
"But..ma'am?...you mean the 'stimulant' ADTH?"
Rangi paused, sighed and said with exagerated patience.
"Yes...the stimulant. Is there a problem?"
Expecting the answer to be negative, Rangi continued to enter the required commands and was stunned to hear Sallys reply.
"I'm sorry ma'am, I dont understand what you want me to do."
Once again Rangi stopped.
"Miss Schuman.I want you to monitor the release of ADTH stimulant into the environmental system.Nothing else. Where's the problem?"
"But..It's already in there....ma'am."
The console lights winked back at Rangis face, twice in each second.Green, green, yellow ,red, a repeated pattern.
"What do you mean 'its there'?" she demanded.
"It's been done ma'am." Sally answered sounding uncertain "You asked me to help you and I did."
Now it was Rangis turn to sound uncertain.
"When?" she asked, thoroughly confused.
"Just now ma'am. A minute ago.You asked me and I did it.I'm reading the results now ma'am......"
The technicians voice stumbled to a halt and Rangi stared down at her own console. She completed the codes and gained access to the system she wanted. Her eyes scanned the screen as the triple row of figures scrolled upwards.
"Sally...what are your readings?"
A slight pause preceded the hesitant reply."That the spread of the compound is at 91% on all decks"
Silent seconds passed.
{I havent done this} Rangi told herself {I know I havent..and theres no sign here} she thought, looking at the screen in front of her where the lifesupport system showed no input of anything at all.
"Commander?" Sallys hesitant voice broke into Rangis thought.
"Wait please" she replied and tapped her console.
"Summers to Ops..what life support readings do you have?"
The Bridge was for this moment quiet. Too quiet thought Ensign Harris stationed at OPS console. And soon his worries were confirmed by incomming call.
"Aye madam, wait a second." He responded and tapped a few times on the console to see that readings of the internal sensors are much more different than it should be.
+taps+ "I've got some strange readings here, wait I'll try to clear it up...... Hmm... Madam, what is the composition of that compound you've injected to the life support systems?"
{What I've injected?} Rangi shook her head.
"I'm about to introduce ADTH compound into the life support system ..." she said bluntly "...five ppm. We're getting unusual readings here. Please clarify the situation. What are you reading?"
"All right, wait... I'm getting unusual readings from engineering and from the decks five and six and few other places on the ship. Uhm.... it seems that there has been placed some devices emiting chroniton pulses."
He paused for a moment and then. "What is the composition of that ADTH doctor?"
"Its the standard measure but with Chronexarin. " she replied, wondering what devices he meant. She wasnt aware of anything that emitted chroniton pulses.
"Chronexarin... Chronexarin, please stand by...." He tapped a few command to console and recalled constitution of the Chronexarin....
"Well doctor, it seems that we have found your problem. That medical you have is designed to block effect of the temporal anomalies such as tetryon radiation and so on. But unfortunately it colides with those chroniton pulses, thus reducing effectivness of the devices a bit and creating sensor interference. It should be possible to filter out by tuning internal sensors a bit."
He paused and for a while he was running his finger on the console.
"Now that should do it, you should be getting the proper readings now, but that reduce of effectivity of those devices should be taken care of."
Rangi looked at her console. Nothing changed.
There was no sign of anything in the system that was altered in any way.
{But I 'know' I havent added anything} she thought.{I havent..}
She glanced around her office looking for what she couldnt say, returned her attention to the console and watched the steady stream of figures. Making a decision she said firmly.
"I'm going to release ADTH compound into the system.Tell me what you see."
Not waiting for reply, she tapped in the command and this time the data on her screen altered.
She seemed to see the figures from a long distance. They jumbled and swam together into long endless streams.
Rangi was transfixed and felt herself sway backwards.
A vivid green light appeared on the screen. It blinded her in its intensity and she squeezed her eyes shut against the brilliance.
Once again she felt the freezing sensation sweep through her body and when it passed, opened her eyes.
"Ma'am?"
Sally Schuman stood just inside the room. "Ma'am..are you o.k?"
Rangi, startled, looked up quickly into Sallys concerned face.
"Shall I fetch Doctor Fisher?" she was saying, half turning back toward the door."You dont look too well"
"No..wait...This might seem a strange question." Rangi said, gathering her shattered thoughts. "....but was the ADTH compound released into the lifesupport?"
Sally glanced from the CMO to the console screen and back again giving Rangi an odd look.
"Errr..yeees....its all there." she said.
Rangi followed the pointing finger.
"You asked for 10 ppm...ummm...isnt that rather alot..if you dont mind me asking?"
Rangi sighed, pressed her fingers to her forehead and smiled to herself.
Sally, thinking that the CMO was in a strange mood and might well answer a strange question herself asked in interested tone..
"What's it going to do?"
Rangi lowered her hand and looked at Sallys eager face.
With a wan smile she replied.
"Its probably going to make us all 'extremely' happy for a while."
