===== Astrometrics, USS Chimera =====
Petrel stood at some console, still amazed by the temporal anomaly where the USS Gott dissapeared just a moment ago. Petrel was a scientist and despite the high danger the ship and the crew were in, he enjoyed this mission a lot.
Petrel jerked as a harsh voice of the XO sounded through the Intercom.
+TAPS+ Guzman to Oriana +
Loosing no time Oriana answered.
+TAPS+ Lieutenant Oriana here +
+TAPS+ Lieutenant, we will enter the artifical anomaly in about 5 Minutes. I have you PERSONALLY responsible for doing whatever is necessary to do for the ship and the crew to survive the trip. If you say every dammed crew should work an EVA suit, it will be so ... but dont even think of forgetting some detail and endanger the ship. Understood?" +
Perel looked sideways at Oriana awaiting her reaction. The XO sounded MUCH different then usual and his voice-tone revealed that he was not in a mood to accept any resistance.
Oriana saw, that Petrel looked at her, but he must have been surprised, when she did ... nothing. She saw and heard in the last few days too much, that she wondered about nothing. Although she wondered never. She thought about FO's order for several seconds, then she turned back to the console.
She tapped some button, then she looked at Petrel: "The anomaly will probably to emit tetryon radiation and other typs of radiation. So, we must calculate, if the shields will hold on and when not, how we can improve them. You will find out the exactly typs and height of the radiation and emissions from the anomaly and I will take a look a the shields."
Petrel was really quite surpised about Oriana's reaction ... or more the lack of it. Like several other junior crew, Petrel was not too fond about the XO ... his ways were somehow 'odd' sometimes. But now it seemed that Guzman's odds were at a peak ...
Shrugging he thought: {Oriana's the chief, so why bother ... its her department and her job ..} Then he noded towards Oriana and turned to his console as well. A painfull expression appeared on his face when he realised that the tetryon, chronoton and neutrino emissions levels were all but stable. Changing through half the scale, Petrel was unable to find a pattern there. This was very unusual ... typical an anomaly of this type had quite stable levels of articles emitations, but that was not the case here. {Artifically created} he thought with a frown.
Doing his best he soon turned to Oriana as reported: "Ma'am, the particle levels are constantly changing and I cant recognize any pattern there. The best I can give you is an equation based on statistics for the last hour. He tapped a button and send the data to Oriana ... it was a bit like Lotto ... eighter were his equations good enough to make it foe the bingo or bad enough to have the ship been torn in to pieces.
Oriana nodded and turned to her work. She raised at the console data about their shields and anomalies from the time they entered the Marsh. There were problems virtually since the beginning. And the data were chaotic often. Oriana fetched breath, concentrate her for a while and continued at her work.
Watching the shield schematics for a minute, Petrel let out a soft cry of wonder. "Ma'am!" he cried out, "the shields are just up to 110% and stable" he reported. After a second or two he added: "it appears that the bridge just activated some new feature of the prototype modifications, energy distribution, shields, temporal shields ... all at peak efectivity" With a small frown he added: "Looks like Guzman thinks it real with entering the anomaly ... "
Oriana looked at Petrel sharply. She was the first, who could say, that it was not logical to risk their ship and lives and flew in the Marsh. But here and now they was Starfleet officers. "Mr. Petrel, you impeached your superior officers orders now, but i believe, your ilogical reaction about the new situation was of emotional kind only. Please, desist from it in the future."
Petrel nodded and said: "I am sorry ma'am. I dont intended to offend the XO, but I just dont like working with equipment that have 'uncharted' features. It add unpredictable variables into all analitical work and even the date we become from our instruments can be corrupted or even manipulated. For example ... we can just rely on data from our external sensors at the moment ... and who can assure us that the modifications ARENT programmed to tamper all sensor data and show us only a half of the real particle emissions levels?"
Oriana thought about this alternative for several seconds. "You are right, it is no way to find out this. We are scientists, so we are more than dependent on the sensors. The only way how to prevend the ship, is to prepare three times as better as another time."
Petrel noded to his superior officer, but on his face was clearly seen that he didnt agree with her completely. For an another moment he studied the sensor data displayed on his screen. He scratched his left ear and said: "Well, I see the most potential danger in the degree the anomaly is now destabilised. Since the Gott passed throug the anomaly the particle emissions almost doubled and are even more variable as before." He chuckled a bit when going on: "I am no expert for temporal mechanics, but I think this anomaly is losing its integrity and slowly collapses. The emissions patterns are distant similar to those of an dying red dwarf star"
When Petrel continued to work, Oriana made the same. She was not happy for this idea with time traveling. The temporal directive forbided it, except for corrrections in timeline. This was the case, so it was logical. But logic couldnt account her preconscious fear.
She looked the records of sensors, which Petrel gave her before a while. Oriana made for any time some measurings and the findings surprised her a bit. According the increase and decrease of chroniton particles it looked like the other end of time anomaly traveled through the time. Not far away, but it was minimal several days. But in their situation was it too much time interval. XChi adaptet the investigations of Gott sure. Was that their investigations?
Petrel shrugged this time and looked on his console for a moment before looking at Oriana again: "I dont think we could predict how the anomaly will react on an another starship assing through it. An additionel unknown variable are our prototypal temporal shields. Those shields are there to protect us from temporal fluxes, but entering a temporal anomaly with those shields might cause a similar effect then pouring H2O into a concentrated H2SO3." He left the sentence unfinished ... both of them could very well imagine the massive reaction ...
Oriana was wondering always, why people need the metaphor to description any situations. She let Petrels notice without the respondence. And we have another problem, she told him, what she found out. According to the last computer self diagnostic are the shields all right. Because its only 0.0125% chance to change so high volume program, I believe, the ship is all right actually.
This time Petrel nodded. "Exact ma'am. With those temporal shielding at peak efficiency, the Chimera is protected like never before. I dont think that we could now improve our chances a lot." With a slight shrugg we added: "We have to trust SSF Engineering that they knew what they've installed on board.
Sure you are right, she nodded, then she tapped her commbadge:
+ TAPS + Astrometrics to the bridge. According to all our checks is the ship prepared to fly through the anomaly now. The shields are holding and their protection is like never before +
A quick look at Petrel, who smiled a bit, then she continued: In addition to this, we found out, that the other end of anomaly is traveling through the time. It is only short time period, I think 5 or 10 days, according to change in chroniton levels
+ TAPS + To the point, lieutenant! + came the hasty Guzmans replay.
+ TAPS + We need to get in the right time point.
+ TAPS + How much time you need to find the right time point?
+ TAPS + Any time, sir. I have the logarithm for rendering the time and chroniton yet. I send the data directly to the helm. I wanted only to inform you.
+ TAPS + All right then, Guzman out.
Oriana saw Petrel, who shrugged his shoulders with clear face you see, then she turned back to the console.
