*** Main Sickbay * USS Chimera ***
From a distance Rangi watched Mercedes tend to the two patients. Scott, leaning against the console, watched Rangi. He decided it was almost possibly to 'see' a womans mind working.
"Right.." she said transferring her attention to him suddenly. He straightened up.
"...So...the turbo lifts arent working."
He nodded agreement.
"Communications are out"
He nodded again,
"There are serious problems on deck three that we know about...also here ofcourse.. so we must safely presume that the rest of the ship is in a bad state too."
"Probably" he replied.
"We need to get medical assistance to the Bridge and we need to move these two patients to the holodeck."
She interlocked her fingers and tapped them against her chin, her attention now on some razor sharp splinters of glass that had once been the overhead cluster.
"So we'll site to site." she said addressing the wreckage. She glanced at Scott, frowned and dropped her hands.
"Don't look at me like that.." she said crossly "..I'm trying to think."
Scott pushed himself away from the consol and shifted his weight uneasily from foot to foot.
"Site to site?" he queried in a doubtful tone."Is that wise? I mean...in this situation?"
"No." Rangi responded and turned to meet his gaze."No it isnt...but theres little choice. One, we cant stay here. We have two elderly people who need care and attention.
Two, we have to get to get to the temporary sickbay and there are no working turbolifts.
Three.." she counted each point on her fingers.".. we cant go through the Jefferies Tubes because there might be fire as on deck three, they could be blocked or whatever, and we could get trapped.
Four we couldnt possibly take the equipment with us even if we tried that way and we certainly couldnt take them." She pointed her finger to the two patients and Scott looked at them in silent agreeement.
"And Five...they need help on the Bridge..."
Scott took a deep breath and released it slowly. He rubbed the back of his neck with his left hand."Its a mighty big risk to take though."
"We have no choice." Rangi replied simply."I dont like it anymore than you do but there's no alternative as far as I can see."
He moved aside as Rangi stepped to the console. She tapped her fingers across the screen.
"Authorization... Summers.. Iota..Omicron " she said sounding as worried as she looked.
After a moment the computer responded in a little failing voice as communication subprocessors were damaged as well:
[Lll..evel ninne authhoriz...ation required. Ppplease, enter...please enter your command code.]
Rangi lifted her hand away from the screen, pressing it to her stomach. It wasnt the responce she was hoping for.She looked at Scott who shook his head.
"Authorization..Summers." she said in a stronger voice " Iota...Omicron."
[Uuu..nable to verify. Please enter complete.... sequence... code... code sequence manualy]
"What?" Rangi murmured. "Ohhhh...Summers...Iota....Omicron..." she said as she tapped the commands. She stood back looking expectantly at the console.
Nothing happened at all.Scott sighed and Rangi turned her head to look at him.
As the electric impulse spread through the gelatinous neural circuitry it collided with the path that was locked by the code Summers Iota Omicron and when it checked it, it ran the subprogramme within that file.
Suddenly through the sickbay's reproductors, the doctor's favourite music began to play, screens on the console where she was standing came alive and spit out all medical files from her personal database.
She looked on this performance unbelievably, but in all this... at the lower left corner of the screen was a blinking button. 'Overide input' in a part that was connected to the main network through the acces code.
Surprised by the sudden sound of music, Rangi looked around then back at Scott and smiled relief at him. He raised his eyebrows and shrugged. She turned to the console, glanced at Mercedes who was walking towards them and pressed the button.
A blank LCARS screen appeared with a blinking inscription. 'Input overide commands'
{Override commands...override commands...right...hang on...} She tapped in the sequence, wondered if she'd got it wrong and jumped a little when the computer said..
[Vocal interface reinitialised. Secondary backup files stable.]
"Computer...State the condition of the Bridge...and the Bridge crew."
[Unable to comply. The internal sensors are offline due to the major system damage.]
Rangis felt her initial hopes dashed and closed her eyes for a second.
"Computer...the status of the transporters...and the state of holodeck 1"
She tried to push aside the thought of what might have happened on the Bridge but there were constant reminders as the deck vibrated and jolted now and then.
Mercedes joined them and all three stood together waiting for the answer.
[The transporters are at 47 percent. Beam enhancers are at 25 percent. Long range transports unavialable. Pattern buffers at 92 percent. Matrix stabilizers at 90 percent. Power to Holodeck one is fluctuating, life support in the Holodeck at 67 percent and failing. Please reinstate the power supply.]
"How on Earth do I do that?" she asked glancing at Scott for an answer.
"I've no idea really." he replied with honesty and smiled at her unhappy face "...but I know a man who does...wait here!"
His smile widened as he raised his finger in warning that she mustnt ask. With long strides he crossed to the biobed, skirting a pile of debris on the way.
"Lieutenant? Lieutenant?" he said gently shaking the arm of the patient lying on the bed."We need your help sir."
Rangi realized Scotts idea and followed him.
The engineer lying on the biobed looked up at the man asking him something. He was talking about powersupply to the holodeck and restoring the life support.
He swallowed, for his mouth was dry and said in a tired voice interrupted with deep breaths:
"There is an access port in the Jefferies tube.... junction 47 alpha.... you have to reroute the main EPS ... to the secondary one and then... you have to reinitialize the power to the ... holodeck from a panel behind wall in (strong coughing)... in the corridor leading to the holodeck." And then the engineer fell unconscious.
"I'll go." Scott said and raised a hand against any protest."If the life support is failing...then we 'have' to risk the transport...and 47% isnt 'that' bad a number. You're right...we havent any choice...now you know the life support is failing...all those patients there too...." He let his words die away.
The deck shook, unbalancing them both.
"Alright." Rangi hurried back to the console. "Computer. site to site transport.Lock on to Doctor Fishers commsignal. transport him to the corridor near holodeck1."
"Rangi!...you cant!" Mercedes cried, realizing what the pair intended to do.
Scott felt a shimmering going through his body. It was different than usual transports. Despite he was afraid, he didn't know what was now happening in the transporter systems.
The computer was trying to accept the complex matrix of a human body and store it properly, but as the core memory wasn't all right it had to borrow memory form other systems. Lucky for the Scott, most systems were offline and so the memory was free, otherwise the pattern would be placed in all memory modules through the Chimera and never restored again.
So after a longer time than it usually took to transport a person Scott appeared in the corridor leading to the holodeck.
The lights were offline and only Red Alert lights were blinkiing , giving the corridor a scary look. There was some debris on the floor and even one broken bulkhead. All of it lit by dim a red light in a regular intervals. And one deck up the computer reported to Rangi: [Transporter efficiency reduced to 45 percent. Transport of more than one person at time isn't recommended.]
"Position of Doctor Fisher" Rangi demanded.
[Internal sensors are offline]
"State the present life support in Holodeck1" she said.
[The life support in Holodeck one is at 50 percent and dropping]
Mercedes pressed her fingers to her lips, her eyes filling with tears. "And now?" Rangi asked.
Meanwhile Scott, redirected the EPS through the secondary system and was already in the corridor to the holodeck, removing the wall panel and looking for the life support controls.
After a short while he found it and tried to restart the life support on the holodeck.
The Computer reported to him as well as to doctor Summers:
[Life support in Holodeck 1 is restored to 75 percent and holding.]
"He's there" Rangi said turning to the woman beside her."Mercedes he's 'there'!" The relief was overwhelming.
"Now for the rest...are you ready to try it?"
After some time of giving a hard time to the already damaged transporter systems, they finally managed to get inside the holodeck and moreover they beamed over some of the needed equipment.
No one mentioned the two crates that didnt materialise. It was too close for comfort.
