Rick finished up repairing the conduit leading to the impulse drive, then
just sat back in the cramp space. He was currently sitting in a section of
the jeffries tube that was surrounded by plasma fire. The good news was that
doors on either side of him sealed shut and kept him safe from the fire. The
bad news was that life support in his section of the tube was damaged beyond
a quick repair, meaning that he had little oxygen remaining.
+tap+ “Rodgers to engineering,” Rick said in a calm voice.
+tap+ “Engineering h.. I can bar... hear you.”
After a short pause.
+tap+ “There, that should be better,” Weathersby said from engineering.
+tap+ “Jo, would you be so kind to have me transported directly to
engineering.”
+tap+ “No can do, sir,” she said. “Transporters are temporally off-line.”
‘Well, there goes the easy way out,’ Rick thought.
+tap+ “Okay, then could you send a fire control team to my location?”
+tap+ “Didn’t I warn you about plasma fires in that section of the ship?”
+tap+ “Now is not the time for ‘I told you so’s’, Ms. Weathersby,” Rick said
After another short pause ...
+tap+ “It may about an hour to get a team to your location.”
+tap+ “I don’t have an hour,” Rick said, remaining calm as he leaned back.
“I don’t have life support and the fire has exhausted most of my oxygen
supply. And you know how I do love to breath.”
+tap+ “Yes, sir,” she said. “I’m sure you do. I’ll get one to your position
ASAP.”
+tap+ “And how long is that?”
+tap+ “Between five to ten minutes.”
+tap+ “Thank you very much. Rodgers out.”
He just sat back and tried to relax, even though a little concern was
seeping in. He had no way of knowing how much oxygen he had, but he still
tried to control his breathing. Rick just closed his eyes as he waited for
either his oxygen to run out, or the fire control team to pull his butt out
of the proverbial sling.
Hopefully the latter.
