'Somebody must be playing a very sick joke,' Rick thought as he found
himself working on one of the plasma conduits leading to the warp core.
He was thrown into the role of acting chief engineer when Lieutenant
McTaggert died. The Chimera had become a wreak, which would be enough to
keep Rick and the rest of the engineering staff bust for a long time.
And
now, after hopping over to the Gott by way of one of the shuttles, he
was
working on another ship which was in no better condition than the
Chimera.
Besides that, his staff had dwindled down to less than half.
Oh, and now they were 10,000 years in the past with no foreseeable way
home
facing a dangerous race determined to take over the galaxy.
"There, that should do it!" Rick said as he pulled himself away from the
conduit. "What's next?"
Rick walked over to another part of engineering as he what had
transpired
with the X'Chi. He couldn't tell exactly what was going on, but had a
bad
feeling nonetheless.
"I think be in fer a wee unwanted company folks!" Rick heard Hawk Versey
say.
"What in the hell ...?" Rick said.
Hawk noted several looks of concern and a few puzzled looks at him. He
tried to briefly clarify he had been reading about ancient earth pirates
and lately tended to have some pirate speak issues.
Rangi cut him short and said "Why do you think were not alone Hawk?"
"Well then what else happened to the power?" Hawk said kind of
dumbfounded
"You're the engineer Mr. Versey, you tell me" Rangi stated
Hawk said, "Good point." Smiled and started tapping at the console.
Rodgers jumped in to help figure things out when Hawk smacked himself on
the forehead and said under his breathe, "oh crap"
After a brief moment of people asking what he found Hawk sheepishly
turned around and stated that the X'Chi transport signal he had
initiated had taken a bad path. The reason why it took Major Walsh a
moment to transport it out was because he was directing the signal
AROUND the warp reaction chamber. Hawk didn't do this in the panic.
Rodgers at this point looked at the warp core and stated, "ewwww, crispy
bug in there."
Rangi wasn't following the engineers train of thought and asked them to
clarify.
Hawk turned to her and admitted to a slight screw-up on his part. When
the bugs signal passed through the warp reaction chamber many things
could have happened. Most commonly you have instant re-materialization
and that destabilized the reaction.
And Rodgers looked again at the warp core and said, "Big crispy bug in
there" He continued with "The good news is it wont take long at all to
get it back up and running."
"The bad news?" Rangi Asked looking at Ra'nar
"Well the bad news is for Hawk, he seems to have volunteered for the
cleanup." Rick looked at Hawk with a smile.
"Argggg, Me be swabbing the deck now matey." Hawk ended walking towards
the warp core.
