*** Main Engineering * USS Gott *** It was a heart stopping moment. In one instant, Ra'nar had moved forward bending towards the almost motionless body of the X'Chi ready to take the samples. In the next instant, one of the creatures legs lifted from the floor in a feeble movement as though, even in its heavily stunned state, the X'Chi proposed to strike. Rangi saw Ra'nar reach toward the nearest mandible, hastily gathering a sample when a familiar blue haze began to form. It enveloped the X'Chi which vanished before their astonished eyes. Ra'nar exclaimed a heartfelt Cardassian expletive and sat back with a thump on the floor, the sample case gripped safely in his hand. "Where is it?" Rangi cried seeing Lt Versey leap into action and begin to tap feverishly on a console. "Oh Crap. Major Walsh is transporting this thing to sickbay for you to use!" he replied, his fingers a blur of activity. "What?...sickbay?..get it back!" Rangi could imagine the panic that would result when a X'Chi materialised there. {What if it revives?} she asked herself {What if it goes on a rampage?} she thought envisaging the horriffic results that even now might be beginning. As Ra'nar scrambled to his feet Rangi stepped to Verseys side, trying to make head or tail of what he was doing. She saw the coordinates locked in, saw the concentration on his face and saw it break into a smile of relief. He turned to her, began to say something ... then the power failed. Everyone looked at everyone else and ended up looking at Lt Versey. Sounding as embarrassed as his expression appeared, he explained that he had made a small oversight. There was nothing that couldnt be readily repaired and Rangi turned away. Ra'nar followed her. "I wish we could have taken cells from a claw." she said. "Just a minute more and you could have time to get them." Her voice told of her frustration. She moved to a vacant consol where she laid out the field kit and carefully transferred the sample Ra'nar handed to her into culture disc. She activated the bioregenerative field and waited. The results were dramatic. "Wow.." she breathed after a few seconds passed. "Look at that....have you ever seen a biofilm grow so fast?" She glanced at Ra'nars face. "Lets transfer it into the computer ...check the database...there might be something there." The information streams were fed in and a command to analyse and compare results was initiated. "Now the difficult part.." she said and gave Ra'nar a small smile. "...waiting." *** End Log *** LtCmdr Rangi Summers CMO/2XO USS Chimera
