Rick looked around at the his engineers efforts, along with those of the
other departments. He wondered if, under similar circumstances, the
engineers on any other ship in the fleet would be able to put forth the same
effort as those of the Chimera. Beaten down, tired and being screwed with by
the recent temporal disturbances, they never gave up.
While Rick knew that he was probably not chief engineer material, he did
know that he couldn’t ask for a better bunch of people to work with.
He then returned his focus on the warp core, which was starting to give him
more and more problems.
“Well, it’ll work,” Hector Gomez said. “For how long, who knows?”
“It’ll be all right,” Rick said as he inspected the core. “As long as we
have no more uninvited visits from the X’Chi, that is.”
“I’m sure the marines will take care of them,” Hector said.
A crewman walked up to Rick, “Sir, we’ve just transferred the last of the
useable items from the Chimera.”
Rick just nodded and continued to focus on the core.
“Seems like a waste,” Rick said.
“The core will be alright,” Hector said.
“No, not that,” Rick said. “The Chimera.”
“Oh,” Hector said, not knowing what else to say.
“I could’ve gotten her operational,” Rick said. “It would’ve taken time, but
she would’ve been fine. Just a waste of a good ship.”
“I know how you feel,” Hector said. “But time is something we don’t have.
Well ... we do ... but we don’t.“
“I know,” Rick said. “Poor girl didn’t really have a chance. But ...”
Rick thought for a moment, “... never mind.”
Rick rubbed the sleep away from his eyes as he tried to put the Chimera out
of his thoughts.
“I’m going to find Hawk and see if he’s cleaned up, yet,” Rick continued.
“We’ll be in cargo bay one. For some reason, we’ve transferred everything
there, but the structural damage to that part of the ship is still a
considerable problem.”
“Aye, sir,” Hector said.
