====== USS Gott, the Science Laboratory ======
While commander told her, what he wanted from her and her people, she thought about his words. It was not logical at first view, not to see the experiments of USS Gott and still to get the ship and the crew at their time frame.
She went to laboratory, where disappeared Terek and she read data from Terek's PADD. There was a Trialus nebula 4,8 LY away. An emission nebula, where the stars began their life. And sometimes they ended their life there and began another life, the Spinward Marsh, as the Alpha Trialus now. Nice to observation, but not to practical use.
Oriana entered the laboratory and she found there almost the whole science department. She came to them, to the curious, uneasy, surprised and frightened people. Oriana could not give them sympathy or sense of safety. She could give them work only.
"You know, we are 10 000 years in the past. But we are the one and only, who can get us back to our time. I read your report," she swinged the PADD: "You are right, the only way to find out how to get this ship through the space-time anomaly is to find out what made X!Chi exactly to create the anomaly and try to repeat it. Maybe it will not to work, but this is our best chance. Least by the time someone will come with better idea. Is the work dealing out?" Terek nodded simple. "Good, then in your work."
When the people went to their consoles again, Oriana thought for a while. {They are not happy from current situation, they are run-down, but they work together and that is enough for them. And the cooperation is the only thing, what will get us home. When this could to grasp everyone.} She thought at Samantha Palmer indeed, but she said nothing and start to work with too.
Shane sat quietly in a distant corner of the room. He knew that his wrk was to give orders only .... the results were all in the capable hands of the science staff. Beeing it, Oriana, Palmer or Terek everyone in the room was FAR more more educated in this matters then Shane. He knew that he could pace the room there and back again for the next hour, but he wouldnt speed their work, so he saved his breath (and leggs) and sat himself behind one of the scientific consoles. He made sure that none of the sensible data will be aviable for the crew ... the last thing they needed was a court trial on half the Science staff for not authorised sensitive knowledge ...
Luckily things after that little incident in the lab returned mostly back to normal. Or at least to what was normal here on Gott and while commander Guzman sat in one corner staring to them with his eagle eyes, Terek was going through some data which has been made available to science eyes and tried to make some sense from that, but it hardly gave any, as they weren't allowed to see the most important parts of it. It was like when you want from someone to gues what is in the locked box. He tapped a few commands on the console to turn of the duty logs, decidet to take a look on the ship's systems to try to find if there have been done some unusual modiffications that could be linked with temporal mechanics. But as he was about to call up the system monitoring, he accidentaly stroke the button which returned him to the database and opened one log at random. {Damn... now I can't even work with the console....} thought Terek as with curriosity he overlooked that log and was abou!
t to close it, when just a second b "Madam..." He turned to Oriana. "I've got something here that might prove usefull." He waited for Oriana to come to him and showed her his results. "It seemed that Gott crew was working on some temporal navigational device, probably in order to get a clear focus of that temporal windows. With any luck it might be one of those two devices.... to the rest of them we have no access."
Oriana stood at one of the consoles in the room and tried to make the same as the other, to find some records of the Gott's time experiments. But it looked like an inextricable task. The Gott had in the databanks so much data, that the computer calculated their searching at 7 days and 4 hour. {It is like look for a needle in a bottle of hay} she thought. Oriana quited this unrealizable task and thought about another ways. The program alone could not be very complicated, even if she could imagine, how much memory it needed. She concentrated at the unusual things only, but she had not luck. Last she had not another idea as to look for user interface of anything what to related with time. And computer opened something with the name "temporal viewing" finally.
She wanted to try this program, when Terek called her for something, he found. She came to him. "We must work with that, what we have here, as command said. Maybe it would be enough, we have the best pilot," she said ironically, remembering at the talk with Harker at the beginning of their mission, when she worked out with him a fly through the Marsh.
Samantha stood by the science console and accessed the sensor information. So far, recreating what X!Chi did was their best option... the last part of her theory still eluded her and therefore it was mostly useless. But the temporal forces in the Marsh at this time was too weak to create the anomaly exactly as it was. They might be able to travel a few years into the future, but would it be enough?
"Good work, ensign. Now we have the half of the experiment at least. But there it must have been some device to creating the anomaly too, any transceiver. I thing, we need find it too," Oriana said. Terek nodded.
A thought suddenly occurred to the SF officer and she accessed the Gott's secondary deflector schematics. Just as she thought... the Gott's deflector had built-in chroniton emitters. Why hadn't she thought of that before? The emitters could be programmed to manipulate an exact timestream to lead them back to the future to the right time... give or take a few weeks. The X!Chi must have somehow managed to program the emitters to send them 10,000 years into the past.
"Lieutenant," she said, turning to Oriana. "I have an idea." Samantha looked at the chronometer on the console in front of her, and then continued. "There is approximately 3 hours left before Alpha Trialus goes Nova. It will take 7 hours for the effects to reach us. If we send a focused chroniton burst from the deflector into subspace at the time the distortions reach us, the effects could be enough to open a rift that would lead us home. That leaves us 10 hours to prepare and to reverse the calculations of the X!Chi" Samantha suddenly felt excited, realising that the idea might just work if the Vulcan agreed. For the first time since they were stranded in the past, she was hopeful that they might actually return to their own time.
Shane divided his attention between the progress of the research and his own console. From the corner of his eyes he noticed something odd and when he looked up he saw both Commander Palmer and Ensign Terek asking LtJg. Oriana something almost simultaneously. Their faces showed traces of hope and interest and Shane wondered if there is any breakthrough in sight. Not wanting to interrupt, he kept siting silently and looked at the three
officers.
{Well, if I were a star ... I love to be in the centre of the interest.} Oriana thought with some amusement, when commander Palmer came to her with another suggestion. {And I love short reprieves} she thought remembering at Alex's words several hours ago. But in spite of this she heard carefully. "Not much time," she said: "But I think, it could work. Our chance to get in our time frame raised at 37,951 %. If we will find out X!Chi made, it will be 78,52 %. We have 10 hours find out it." She turned to the console: "If I am well informed, the degree of temporal displacement is directly proportional to the number of chroniton particles ... " Oriana was in her element and she didn't much interested, if someone is hearing her.
It was very interesting to watch the Science officers beeing "eaten" by their work. They looked a bit like children with a new toy ... forgetting about everything else and focusing only at the new "toy" exploring all its secrets. Shane smiled to himself thinking back on the time when he was a merely ensign and all enthusiastic about becoming a tactical officer. {Good old times} he thought.
"That is correct," Samantha responded to Oriana, joining her at the console. She typed in a few commands and a simulation appeared on the screen. "However, there is a variable involved. Because the X!Chi manipulated an anomaly to travel this far back in time, the strength of the anomaly needs to be included in the equation as well, and affects the temporal displacement. At the moment, the temporal anomalies are very weak in this area, and it would take years to generate enough chronitons to form a temporal vortex capable of taking us back to our own time.
"Once we've discovered the X!Chi's calculations, we can compare it with the yield of the temporal distortion caused by the Trialus event. That will give us the amount of chroniton particles needed to determine the degree of displacement of the vortex. We just reverse the polarity of the chronitons, and then - theoretically - that should put us back in the time where we came from."
Shane jumped from his seat and quickly came to the group of the three officers. "Did I hear you right that you have here a way how to get the Gott back to our time?" he asked enthusiastic but not 100% convincted.
Samantha noded slighty: "Yes sir but ..."
Shane interruped the female Commander: "Just upload your ideas to this PADD" and reached her over a worn PADD, "and I'll bring it up to the bridge for the General to have a look at it. You three" Shane pointed at the three gathered scientists, "continue with your calculations and when the General will approve this idea you can supply us with exact data".
Two minutes later Shane paced through the damaged deck three towards the turbolift to bring good news up to the bridge. There IS a way home!
