"Colonel," Ripley said when she was finished, "I have a few questions
before we get going." She paused a moment, and went ahead when the Colonel
nodded. "I'm just wondering, do we have any information as to why the
Federation was interested in re-educating Jem'Hadar warriors and releasing
them into the Federation? Why undergo such a thing, with genetically
engineered soldiers of the Dominion? I find it hard to believe that the
people who crafted this idea had the best interests of the Jem'Hadar in mind.
"The second thing I was wondering, you mentioned that there have already
been re-educated Jem'Hadar released. Were the individuals on Einhoften able
to overcome the Jem'Hadar's dependency on ketracel-white?"
Jeni managed not to frown, but instead pinched her lips before she spoke.
They were excellent questions, questions they should have answers to.. but
not this time, "I wish I could tell you, but I just don't know. The answers
to those questions were blanked out in the process of downgrading the
classification level. Everything I was given, officially and unofficially
is on those PADDs."
It was a weak answer, and Jeni knew it.. but it was the truth. The staff
hadn't all skimmed them all the way through, but they'd find out soon
enough that they were full of holes, especially where the Marduk
capabilities and Federation motivation behind this was concerned. It was
incredibly dangerous, but Jeni wasn't in any position to simply say no to
the Admiral. Besides, it needed to be done, and the Special Forces were the
best people to do it.
"If you have any friends in Intelligence or the upper bureaucracy who owe
you favours, I'd ask you to cash them in," Jeni said frankly. She didn't
have many of those favours in those areas, she never needed them. She had
spent a majority of her career as a Marine Officer in the field. Those
contacts she had were more operations and logistics based. Still, if they
could get more background information, anything extra that would give them
an upper hand, they could use it.
