It was only a small crackling noise, but Kaitlin was certain everyone had
heard it. She held her breath as she felt the adrenaline surge through her
veins. She had only had limited experience with "combat" training, and
definitely no real experience outside of a simulator. It took only a second
for her to drop to crouching position, the rifle on her coming within
millimeters of the hard dirt. The rest of the ODA team had already done the
same, and the more experienced members were trying to track where the noise
had originated from, like cats stalking their prey.
When Kaitlin finally remembered to breathe again, she heard a voice not far
behind her. It wasn't even a voice, really, more of a muttering followed by
a pulse of light. Man down.
Frabrini didn't have far to hit the ground from his crouching position. It
was almost second nature for Kaitlin, as she quickly made her way towards
the injured man, herself remaining low to the ground and using a free arm
for balance as a chimpanzee running through the jungle might. The man had
been shot in the leg. And from what she could tell based on her initial
observations, the person who fired was intending to take someone out with
that shot.
"Hold still," she spoke very softly. Frabrini nodded, clutching his leg and
looking as though he was going to bite his tongue off trying to hold back
his feelings of pain. Spc Michaels took out the small medkit that she was
given. It was a small field kit that was easily carried. After all, she
thought, it wouldn't be practical for a combat person to be carrying around
a full compliment of medical equipment. She very methodically disinfected
the wound, which was more of a burn that punctured the skin. The shot hadn'=
t
hit any major blood vessels, so the man was in no danger of bleeding out.
The shot did, however, damage a few nerves and he'd probably be left with a
nasty bruise. But, despite the pain, she had fixed him up enough so he coul=
d
walk. By the look on his face, he was man enough to take the pain.
Most of the ODA team kept surveying the area, keeping a low profile. Walsh
must have sent Cortez and Lynch off somewhere, because as soon as she and
Frabrini began making their way towards Walsh, Cortez and Lynch came runnin=
g
back. They seemed to have matching looks of urgency on their face. They mad=
e
a cute pair. Kaitlin couldn't help but wonder about exactly *how* good of
friends the two were.
"Jem'Haddar" one of them answered, as Kaitlin couldn't help but look at the
blood spattered on Cortez' face. Part of her wanted to ask whether the
person whose blood that belonged was injured and in need of care. But, goin=
g
by the book, Kaitlin knew that she shouldn't run off half cocked anytime sh=
e
thought someone was down. She took the safe road and got the okay from the
ODA commander.
Cortez and Lynch proceeded to tell Walsh their story. And their idea of wha=
t
could be done.
