===Captains ready room===
Having finished glazing his pitcher and setting both Athena's and his
creation in the kiln, Keylor had decided to return to the ship for a
check-up on how things were progressing for 1LT Acherons exercise, as well
as catch up on some paperwork. Still in his civilian clothes and with the
remnants of dry clay spotted about on his face, Keylor reviewed the latest
reports, communications and personnel rosters sitting at his desk and
sipping Bajoran Sweet wine.
Keylor had been reviewing the new personal records in particular the new
ODA commander . Even though Marine Captain Walsh was listed as a marine, he
had started out in star fleet. This interested Keylor because to him, he
could not understand why any one would start in Starfleet and then transfer
to marines. The marines were the hard core component of the federation.
First in and last out, they always seemed to draw the lousy job that fleet
did not want. So for some one to move form the cushy fleet to the grungy
marine was some thing he had a hard time to understand.
Knowing that 1LT Acheson had suggested that the oda perform some intruder
drills for the exercise, he figured he would have a quick chat with Walsh to
measure him up and gage him before the exercises begun. Keylor pressed on
the communications panel on his desk and called out.
Colonel Bretam to Captain Walsh"
"Go Ahead Sir" Jack gave the acknowledgement.
"Captain, Report to my Readyroom, Post haste" the channel closed.
Jack had received the Call to the Captains readyroom and encountered an old
acquaintance on the way upto meet the Colonel. Something he wasn't
particularly looking forward to to be perfectly honest. Marines tend to act
a Certain way around marines according to Jacks observations. If he was
heading up there in a Blue Collar fresh out of Starfleet Academy with all
the hopes and aspirations in the universe he was reasonably sure that the
Colonel would be slightly easier to the Fleet Officer than he would be to
the Marine Captain in his presence.
Crap knows Crap he guessed.
Also, It wasn't like he was your typical marine, he'd lived on both sides of
the line, Starfleet and the Corps, it wasn't like he could just forget the
life he had before he'd gone back to Quantico, but it wasn't like he could
forget the time he'd spent at Quantico. Reaching the Colonels ready room he
pressed the chime and entered as per the request of the Commanding Officers
orders. Once he was in he saw the Colonel, a Bajoran man sitting behind the
desk.
"You Requested to see me, Sir!" he raised his voice slightly on the 'sir' in
the way that most marines do when they want to kiss some ass to a superior,
it was something that Jack hated more than anything but to be honest he
didn't really want to make an enemy of the Commanding Officer quite so early
in the game, considering he was likely to make enemies of a lot of people on
this ship, well it was always the way.
Keylor took a final sip of his wine and set the glass down on the desk. He
then looked up at Jack, "Aye I thought that was obvious with my request." he
smiled a bit. Keylor motioned to a chair on the opposite side of the desk.
"Care to sit?" He asked. Keylor looked over the new marine trying to size
him up a bit. with such a colourful service record and personal background,
he was interested to see what made this man tick.
"I wouldn't mind." Jack nodded as he slipped comfortably into the Chair
facing the Captain, who obviously seemed to be enjoying a glass of wine at
his desk.
Keylor picked up a padd form the desk and acted like he was looking it over,
he had no need, he had thoroughly read the record before summoning Jack.
Still looking at the pad he asked, "So Captain you have fairly recently
transferred in to the marines. Is there a particular reason you chose to
join the marines, and not stay in the Starfleet branch?" He then looked at
Jack for a response.
"Well to be honest I could sit here and give you that crap about wanting to
be the best I could possibly be, yadda yadda" he leant back slightly in the
chair, wondering if he was already pushing his bounds with Bretam. "I'd
pretty much had Enough of taking crap of people who really aren't qualified
to give me crap..."he paused. "...the girls really love the green collar
too".
Keylor nodded, "Interesting." was the only reply. "Well captain, I see here
you have held positions on many different ships. The Raven, the Resolution,
even the Archer. Both the Raven and the Resolution you held engineering
positions. But after spending some time on the Archer, as a guest, you took
a position of Chief security officer. And there seems to be some gaps in
your service record, time between assignments." he then gave more of a
questioning look, "If you had trained in the academy for engineering, why
bounce around so much? And why take on a security position when you could be
a damn site more useful in engineering?"
"Engineering's nice and all that but honestly, I'm out here to find someone
I lost, I just ain't finding them in the Engine Room. Starfleet is pumping
out Engineering dream boys left right and centre, all they'll do is retire
60 year old LtJG's without having achieved anything. I realised pretty
quickly that I didn't want that. But to be honest once again, I'm pretty
flaky at any given moment, Starfleet let me get away with so much, All I had
to do was hole up on Risa with wine, women and the sun and they just weren't
bothered. The Corps gave me some structure, and if I didn't adhere to it
then, well I guess you know what can happen"
"I'm a little surprised as to why I was assigned here though" he looked
towards the Colonel with a questioning gaze.
Keylor nodded, "Aye I am as well. Your record is not pristine. " he pointed
to the pad, "There are several entries from your former CO on the raven. And
your record does not shine from your other postings." he placed the padd
down. "Serious gaps between assignments, constant notes about drunkeness...
does not look good." The womanizing, the drinking the good times I can
accept..." he gave a more serious look, "As long as it is in moderation and
does not effect your work."
Jack had to admire the guys honesty, "I don't actually drink anymore
Colonel...well not that much anymore"
Keylor then turned more serious. "As long as you do your job, follow orders
and take care of business you wont have a problem with me." he then pointed
at Jack and waggled his finger, "And beleive me when I say this, you don't
want to get this salty old marine dog angry."
"Aye Sir" Jack nodded in tune.
Keylor leaned back in his chair and picked up another padd. After glancing
at it, he tossed it to Jack. "this is a new assignment to the ship, Someone
you might recognize from the USS Archer." Keylor waited for Jack to review
the padd.
Jack took the PADD and looked over it, Sonofa gun, It was Lieutenant
Andersen Foster. An old face from the Archer, not that Walsh had actually
had much interaction with the guy, but James didn't like him and that was
good enough for Jack. "Foster, not exactly my best friend. What's it to me?"
Keylor nodded like he already knew what Jack would say. "Well His original
orders were to be assigned to the ODA. Though I really don't see the wisdom
in that. At least you had servers as a security chief, you have a basic
understanding of ships security and away team mission. But this guy, no
matter how special they think he is up at command has been nothing more than
an assistant operations officer. I personally see him as a liability on a
oda mission. For the PROPHETS SAKE! He has not even been run through any SSF
training. "
Jack smirked slightly at the passion the Colonel showed in not wanting the
man on the ODA Team, which was actually a shame as Jack had read Andys
record before and a few notes that James Finn had made, along the lines of
Foster eating Phaser fire for breakfast.
Keylor paused and continued in a calmer manner, "Any way, I want him
assigned to operations, were he will be more useful. I just wanted you to
know because when he reports on ship, he will probably seek you out first.
Did not want you to assume you have his 'super powers' to count on for away
missions and such."
"Thats fine sir, If he reports to me I'll direct him to where he should be
going." Jack replied stone faced as he stood, assuming that was all.
Keylor nodded. "Very well then. I will not keep you any longer form your
preparations. Make sure you turn detailed evaluations of your exercises I am
interested in seeing how everyone does."
Jack nodded and then left the office. Keylor watched as Jack left. He
wondered if Jacks wilder days were behind him, of if this one would be
trouble for the word 'Engage'. As the door closed behind Jack, Keylor
shrugged it off. He then stood himself and looked a the time. It had been
long enough for the kiln to have done its job and the pottery would be
cooling down now.
Locking his workstation and securing the pads, Keylor headed back to the
station.
