Assistant Medical Officer
USS Chimera NCC 96899
= Mercedes’ Quarters
A distant, constant beeping noise brought Mercedes back from the land of
sleep into consciousness. She slowly opened her tired eyes and looked around
confusedly as to where the beeping was coming from. She’d fallen asleep at
her desk and as a result her back was rather sore.
Standing up, she walked into the bathroom, wondering if it wasn’t the
shower’s timer that had gone off. Nope, it wasn’t that, although the beeping
seemed to have followed her into the bathroom.
Walking back out into the main room, the beeping followed her again. Turning
around a few times trying to figure out where it was coming from, she
finally realized it was coming from her pocket.
Digging into her pocket, Mercedes pulled out her chronometer which was the
source of the beeping. She activated the holographic display and then said a
few choice words as she remembered why the timer had gone off almost two
hours before already.
She quickly scrambled over to the window and looked outside at Kinsi getting
smaller in the distance. Mercedes had set the timer so that she’d wake up in
time to get off the ship before it departed for the war games. After doing
some shopping on the station, she’d come back and fallen asleep at her desk,
and didn’t hear when the timer went off.
Sighing, Mercedes figured she might as well go check up on things in
Sickbay. Kinsi wasn’t the most extravagant space station she’d ever been on,
and her quarters were far more comfortable than the ones that were available
on the small backwater station.
Mercedes looked at the letter she’d been typing for her mother on her
computer terminal screen. Her mother would be so proud that she’d received a
Golden Heart award, but it would only make her father angry. She closed the
screen and decided to finish the letter later. What the use was, she didn’t
know. All her subspace letters sent to her parents were deleted by her
father; he’d disowned her for all practical purposes.
Not bothering to change into uniform, she just closed the computer terminal
and headed out the door. Thinking about her family just made her angry and
miserable. After checking in on the Sickbay, maybe she’d go spend some time
in the holodeck to cool down. But first, work seemed like a welcome
distraction.
