Athena was carry a tote full of padds from her office to her quarters. It
seems as though everything was moving so fast. It wasn't the first time she
had
been moved abruptly by Starfleet and it almost always was a result of some
diplomatic influence. Although this time it seemed to be different. The
Falcon
had returned to base and there was a whole shuttle full of personnel, mostly
marines, that already left for the USS Chimera. She was shocked to find out
that she was being sent as well. Even more amazing to her was that Lt.Col.
Bretam and Lt. Guzman were to be her new CO & XO. She entered the turbo
lift and
waited for it to reach her requested deck.
Rangi walked towards the lift thinking of Margo and her baby....and the fact
that she was leaving Aurora. The message had come like a bolt from the blue
one minute setting of on the Falcons mission, next minute returning to
Aurora
and then to find that she was joining another ship...the USS Chimera. She
stood
waiting for the doors to open. It had been a shock to find that she had to
leave again so soon and even more of a shock to know that Shane had already
left.
The doors opened and she stepped inside. he thoughts returned to the new
baby
and she smiled to herself.
Athena smiled at the warm thoughts coming from Rangi. She smiled and said,
"Hi." The medical officer and herself rarely talked since Rangi had found
Athena escaping from duties in Shane's quarters once and their last meeting
had
been very volatile at least between the men.
Rangi looked up and recognized the counselor. Still smiling "hello" she
replied and then felt slightly awkward as she remembered their last meeting
when
Shane and Rob had come within a hairs breadth of squaring up to each other.
"You were thinking about babies, I think." Athena hoped this would ease the
tension that seemed to envelope the lift.
"Yes, I was," replied Rangi her smile returning. Margo Johnson's baby." The
lift resumed its journey. After a moments pause, Rangi asked.."Did you know
that some of the marines have left?" she wondered what, if any, relationship
existed between Lt. Richards and the counselor. The two of them seemed to
have a
somewhat more than 'counselor and patient' air about them.
"Oh, I bet she's feeling more comfortable then. Yes, I did know some of the
marines had left." She paused for a moment and then continued. "I saw many
of them get on a shuttle just about as soon as the falcon docked." She
paused
another moment and then asked, "Did Shane have to go on that shuttle?"
Rangi nodded. "Yes.... ..It was a bit of a shock actually. I hadn't
expected..." she looked at Athena and gave a small smile."I'm going to
Shane's
quarters. He asked me to pack some stuff for him. He hadn't time to do it
all."
Sensing that this might be difficult for Rangi, Athena asked, "Would you
like
me to help you with that. I really don't have much to do to get myself
finished up and I could take his things to him for you if you want. I've
been
transferred to the USS Chimera myself."
"You too?" asked Rangi in surprise then, realizing how that could have been
taken wrongly added "Oh I'm sorry...I didn't mean to sound so
surprised...ummm.by all means come along..but I can give them to him
myself." She smiled at the
thought. "We'll be traveling together then?" she asked Athena as the lift
stopped and the door opened.
"I guess we will. I'm glad to hear that you and Shane aren't being
separated
by duty." She gave Rangi a genuine smile showing that she really meant what
she said.
Rangi returned the smile."Yes, so am I." she looked away and then remeeting
Athena's gaze stated.."Robs going to."
"Oh, really I hadn't heard. That won't be too difficult will it?" Athena
asked the question to see if Rob would be given a fair shake rather than
being
punished for past wrongs. After all rob was trying to improve and he had
just
come to the realization that he and Rangi would never be an item.
"No." Rangi answered simply but frowned as she thought of Shane's words, how
they implied he didn't, somehow, quite trust her. They walked for a way in
silence."May I ask you a question?" Rangi said looking sideways at Athena
and
thinking that she possibly already knew what the question would be.
"I would hope anyone would feel free to ask me any questions. It is what a
counselor hopes for, but rarely finds." She looked at Rangi from the corner
of
her eye as they walked along the corridor to Shane's quarters.
"It might sound odd, or out of place, or none of my business.." She watched
Athena's expression. "I was going to ask...you and Rob get on quite well
don't
you?"
Athena was afraid this was the question she might ask, but now what to tell
her. She paused for another step. "I guess we get along all right and
sometimes better than others." What she said didn't show a fondness and
barely gave
any indication of more than a patient/doctor type relationship.
Rangi nodded wondering if Athena was deliberately holding back {but then}
she
thought { what has it to do with me?} They walked a few steps in silence.
"Thats good." Rangi said. They reached Shane's quarters. Rangi tapped in
the
code and Athena followed her inside
Athena sensed her thoughts but ignored them. Sometimes she wished she could
turn off her abilities. She followed Rangi in the room and cheerfully
asked,
"Where would you like me to start?"
There were signs of a hurried departure. Rangi smiled at Athena with a 'its
a
bit of a mess but what can you expect' expression as she gathered up two
shirts from the back of a chair.
"Not the first time I've seen it this way,"Athena said as she began to fold
a
pair of pants that had been hastily discarded.
Rangi paused for a fraction of a second and then glanced at Athena. "Nor
me.." she said walking towards the bedroom door.
Sensing that she said something a bit disturbing, Athena found an empty
container and began to fill it with the knick knacks and things that were
about the
room.
Rangi stood in the open doorway. "Oh Shane Guzman." She said to herself as
her eyes traveled round the room that resembled the aftermath of a small
explosion. She opened the wardrobe and pulled out a holdall, found it half
full
already, heaved it onto the bed and began to fold clothes and lay them
carefully
inside.
Athena finished packing the things in the living area and now it looked
quite
bare. She left the container on the sofa and went to take some folded
clothes to Rangi in the bedroom. "I finished out there is there anything I
can do
to help you in here," she asked as she handed the few clothing items she was
holding to Rangi.
"I'm almost done too." She answered looking around the room."he doesn't have
that many things. Thank you." She took the offered pile of clothes and
squeezed them into the top of the holdall. "That's about it I think.."she
added."...except...that!." She crossed the room and took down a small
painting.She looked
at it and shook her head."He likes this alot." she explained to Athena
holding it for her judgment. Vivid colours displayed what appeared to be
wizards or
magicians and other strange looking creatures, towards one side was a large
wooden chest...with rows of human feet along both sides. Rangi looked at
Athena
and smiled.
Athena looked at the picture leaning her head first one way and then the
other. "Interesting," she replied calmly.
Rangi's smile widened."Yes!!" she said."...Is there room for it in the
container?" They returned to the main room. "That's it then." Rangi murmured
placing
the painting reverently on top of the luggage. "Everything packed away."
Athena looked at her watch, "oh, better get moving myself if I'm going to
make that shuttle." She smiled at Rangi and then turned toward the door.
"Thanks for the help." Rangi said following her to towards the door carrying
the overfull holdall. "I'll have everything transported to the shuttle
bay...perhaps see you there?"
"Yeah, we might." Athena gave a wave over her shoulder as she walked out the
door
