===== Main Bridge, USS Chimera =====
Now it were less then 48 hours till the maiden cruise of the Chimera. The
excitement of the crew was rising. It was more then cleary visible trough
the whole ship. From crewman talking about the departure procedures in the
mess hall, through officers speculating about the exact time of the launch
... to the senior staff franticaly reviewing the latest reports for their
department.
Shane of course felt the same excitement as every one else, but he tried to
hide it. He looked up from the Padd he was reviewing and looked around the
bridge. It was evening shift and so the majority of the bridge crew was from
gamma shift. Many officers took double duties to make the ship ready for the
departure in the short remaining time ... and Shane himself felt that it was
his duty to spend as much time as possible on the bridge.
Colobel Bretam Keylor, the CO was to busy with all the preaprations and the
paperwork to spend much time there and the senior staff with bridge training
was busy with their own departments to have time to sit on the bridge,
making the Watch.
Looking down at the PADD, Shane wondered about the practices of the SSF
Command once again. The crew on the Chimera was just put together ... for no
more then 4 weeks and the SSF Command kept altering the rooster. For example
now, they transfered the Chimera's Acting CsciO LtJg. George Pendrel away
from the ship. Shane thought a bit avout him ... {Sure, he was a bit weird
... but still a talented officer, I ask myself where will we get a new Chief
Science ...}
Maybe was the SSF Command just trying their patience ... cause in return
they got quite a number of experienced NCOs. Mostly for Engineering and
Science. That was a bit surprising cause Science was generaly not regarded
as a vital department for SSF ships. Shane scrolled the PADD and saw that
the highest ranking officer in Science was now Peter Petrel. Rank : Warrant
Officer.
Shane looked at his Biography and duty records and sighed. {Quite
Impressing!} he thought. Petrel served for more then 18 years on various SSF
ships. First as computer specialist, then in Science. Speciality: Counter
cloak detection techniques. Many recomendations from his previous superiors
and awards for duty performance. Two times Technical Excellence award.
Interested in the man, Shane decided to call him to the bridge. +TAPS+
"Guzman to Warrant Officer Petrel. Please report to the bridge as soon as
possible" +TAPS+ "Petrel here. I am on my way sir ..." was the immediate
response. It almost looked like the man expected Shane's call ...
Five minutes later the turbolifts door opened and a tall man in a teal
uniform and a single holow pip of an Warrant officer entered the bridge.
Without hesistation he made his way towards the bridge's centre. Reaching
the CO's seat he stood to attention and said in a soft but resolute voice:
"Warant officer Petrel reporting as ordered sir." Looking straight at Shane
he waited for the XO's response.
Shane was quite impressed by the ascension of the man and stood from his
chair. "Mr. Petrel, I called you to the bridge to ask you if had time to
make yourself knowing with the projects currently running in Science" Shane
got directly to the point.
Petrel noded: "Aye, sir. At last from a part. I saw the exobiology lab and
detentions cells, the fractal scan routine you tried to adopt back on
Starbase 742 and the cloak detection project lead by Lt. Pendrel."
A bit surprised about Petrels knowledge and straightness in his speach Shane
replied: "I am impressed Mr. Petrel. You seem to know a lot and pay
attention to details. How the hell do you know about me and the fractal
scan?"
Peterel grineed slightly: "You know sir, teh birds talked to me a bit ..."
Shane noded: "Aha ... I see you are already too long in the SSF service ...
you dont even trust your superiors" replied Shane.
Petrel noded back: "Of course not, sir".
Shane shruged: "Whatever ... I saw that you have some skill with anti cloak
detection techniques. I would like to know what do you think about the
solution Lt. Pendrel developed." He said and montioned to Petrel to move to
one of the programable back pannel on the bridge.
On the way Petrel replied: "Its good sir. It should work and will provide
some decent results. But with all respect sir, such a solution was replaced
by the USS Dark Matter as obsolete 3 years ago."
As they reached the panel, Shane tapped some buttons and recalled the plans
for the anticloak device. He looked at Petrel and said: "Hmm ...
interesting. I trust that you know a better way how to make it work ...,
dont you?"
Petrel smiled slightly and said plainly: "Yes, i do sir." He started to tap
the console by himself and began to alter the visualisation plans while
saying: "I will connect the lateral sensor grid to the main deflector with a
periodic algorithm to become a compact unit able to detect and evaluate even
the most slightest chages in the inertial gravimetric field ..."
