Athena had checked the whereabouts of the CO out with the computer before
she left her office. She now stood in front of his ready room door and rang
the chime.
Keylor sat at his desk trying to compose a letter to Mark Redding's Parents.
It was not an enjoyable task. No one likes hearing bad news, and writing
about it was just as bad. HE leaned over the padd on his desk and placed
both forearms on the table top. HE hunched over and re-read what he had
written so far. He heard the chime of the door sound, instinctively he
called, "COME!"
Upon hearing his reply to the chime, Athena entered the room. She walked up
to his desk and stood before him. He was totally engrossed in something
that he was working on and she knew that he didn't have a clue who was
standing before him. As her silence continued, he finally looked up and met
her businesslike gaze.
Keylor finally looked up at the person who had entered the room. Before him
was the counselor. "Oh good," He said plainly. He pointed to a chair, "Have
a seat please."
She took a seat across from him and looked at her padds, before answering
his inquisitive look. "I'd like to give you my final report about the crews
mental health, but first I have a couple of questions for you." She gave
him a pointed stare and then continued, "How are you finding your new job?"
Keylor tapped on the pad and filled away his work. He then leaned back in
his chair and nodded to Athena. "Well, I find that here is a lot more paper
work on a starship than I ever had as a detachment commander. But over all
the responsibilities are the same." He glanced at the padd on the desk.
She nodded and input some information into one of the padds. "Do you have
any specific thoughts about your crew," she asked next. She noticed him
glance back toward the padd on his desk and had a sense of loss wash over
her as she waited for his reply.
"Well," Keylor started out slowly, "they are for the most part a young crew.
Quite a few of them have some sort of experience but many are for the first
time taking on departmental roles." He paused for a moment to think about
what to say next. "I have no doubt that they are good at what they do. Just
that we are embarking on an adventure together for the first time. How they
will work together as a team is my primary concern."
Keylor realized that his thoughts seemed a bit scattered on the subject. But
as he listened to himself speak, he realized that how the crew will work
together was his primary concern. As he finished his statement he realized
he was not at all concerned about their age or experience, that always
develops as one is on the job.
Again she typed some information into one of the padds, as she listened to
him. "Just two questions left," she smiled and asked away, "I'd like to
know if you like your job and if there is anyone that you are particularly
concerned about?"
Keylor smiled,"Well I would not be here if I was not prepared to do the job
I was asked to do. DO I like it? Sure, I get to command a starship, travel
about the galaxy and most likely blow things up." He Grinned wide.
She smirked at him as she added a couple of notes to a pad.
"As for your second question, no. Is there any one I should be concerned
about?" He looked at Athena with a bit of suspicion.
"NO, there isn't. Was just trying to get a heads up if there was someone
you were concerned about." She smiled at him and began to type on her other
padd as she began her formal report. "The general morale and mental health
of the crew is good. They are, however, more than ready to leave. I have
found the CO has a positive aspect which will set the mood for the crew in
how they interact." Athena hoped that would put some of his concerns to
rest about their teamwork. She continued, "The XO also was a good out look
and only wants the best for the crew even if he is a little unsure about his
new responsibilities. I believe he'll grow into it just fine." She gave
Keylor a smile took a deep breath and continued, "The medical department is
sure to thrive under the go with the flow attitude of the CMO. The science
department was a little scattered when their equipment wasn't ready when
they first arrived, but seem to be in heaven now that they can continue
their work and perform experiments."
She paused for a moment and cleared her throat before going on, "I get the
sense of strength and leadership from security and I might add they are
antsy to get started." She paused again and then said, "Engineering is a
little stressed but seemed better as repairs began to become completed and
they are a little tired. The.. death of their chief... will affect their
morale more than their abilities but they will be able to continue without
any problems."
She finished typing as she finished speaking. She leaned forward to hand
him the pad with the now completed formal report, but paused half way as she
realized she was probably the last person to see Redding alive when she
interviewed him.
Keylor nodded, "good to hear that. I have tried to keep things positive and
I have noticed the XO has been rather involved with many of the
departments." Keylor grabbed a pad from under his desk and tapped on it.
"The latest reports show that we will be able to make way soon. There are
just a few minor details to finish up and the base will clear us for
departure." He set the pad down on his desk. " So how is the Counseling
department holding up?" He grinned.
Shaking the remnants of the last thought from her head, she smiled. "A
little tired from all the crawling around I did yesterday, but good
otherwise. She brushed a strand of loose hair behind her ear and continued,
"I don't think the engineer expected me to hunt them down to complete their
evals." The competition of her last sentence brought Redding's shocked look
to her mind and she brushed it aside. "I guess this means my next task to
tackle is the bridge," she questioned.
Keylor smiled, "Well I don't think the bridge will be attacking you,
tackling might be a bit strong of a term. I just want you to become familiar
with it." He chuckled slightly. "See I know that back on aurora your routine
was more of an office style. but here your role will be a bit different.
During confrontations an away missions I would like to have you on the
bridge. You telepathic abilities can come in handy in an unknown situation.
So I want you to become familiar with the bridge, the different positions,
and the kind of things that occur on the bridge, the crew there. I am not
asking you to be prepared to take charge of the bridge. He smiled.
She nodded and smiled, "I think I can handle that." She took a moment to
think then said, "How about a tour of the bridge with a min description of
each? Maybe you or someone else could help me with that?"
Keylor nodded. "Sure, check in with the XO he can help you there. I would
but I have other things I must attend to first. With all hope we will be
leaving here soon." He smiled a bit.
She gave him a smirk and raised an eyebrow but said nothing as she left the
ready room.
