A gentle light fell over main engineering from the auxiliary lighting
as Mike tapped away at his console. A cleverly placed shot from the
Simpson had just hit into their powergrid, artificial as the shot was,
it had still caused the lights to fail. Some of the lights might even
have to be replaced, a huge task on a fifteen-deck starship.
Mike put his hands to his face and ran them through his hair. He could
not remember the last time he had worked such a shift, but with his
engineers mostly on the Kinsi, he was taking more than half of his
time to oversee wargames and repairs and he wasn't exactly enjoying
it. The computer beeped to signifiy that it was two am. Mike frowned
and got up, heading for the turbolift.
"Deck 15" he said as he entered the small capsule. The capsule began
to plumit downwards to the very bottom of the ship. Mike stepped out
as soon as he could and the lights came on, aluminating the deck from
complete darkness. "Noone here then" he said to himself.
He headed for the ship's main relay center, where most of the power
transfers took place, a room where few people ever went. The room was
only routinely cleaned each six months because of the lack of the
activity, and it was clear that it was due a cleaning from the way it
looked. Once Mike had cleared the screen of one of the consoles in
there he was able to sit down and begin to reroute power past the
Chimera's science labs. This was allow new equipment to be installed
easily. Once that was down, he began to run diagnostics on the
equipment around him.
Mike scanned out each of the maintainence shafts, small tunnels which
were only opened when the ship was in 'dry dock'. Each of them was
fine, the air cooling system was keeping the dirt away and there was
nothing of interest in there. With that done, noone would check the
shafts for months.
He left the room and headed to the room across the corridor, a much
more used room: the ventral maintainence command center. He accessed a
console and checked that his rerouting had worked. It had.
