Scott Fisher stifled a yawn, pushed himself off the edge of the biobed
he'd been leaning on and walked towards the nearest replicator. He ordered a
strong black coffee and waited idly for it to appear. He was still mulling
over Rangi's strange idea that people were getting delusional. There had been
no one brought to sickbay with even the slightest sign of that.
The coffee materialized and Scott lifted the mug to his lips, gingerly
taking a sip of the steaming liquid. Turning away from the replicator, he
noticed MaiKai's slim figure enter by the main door of Sickbay, took a quick
gulp of his coffee and setting off on an intercept course, called her name.
"MaiKai morning...got a minute?"
Just walking in the Sickbay, MaiKai noticed a voice of one young Scott
Fisher. She turned around and replied with, "Yes, Scott ... Good Morning to
you too ... sure, I got a moment." Not sure what he wanted to talk about, but
Mai was eager to oblige.
Scott smiled, lifted his mug and asked "Can I get you one?" At her
nod of agreement, Scott returned to the replicator ordered a second cup and
carefully turned, now holding a cup in each hand.
"We can go to the office?", he suggested.
"That would be nice," she said as she looked around the Sickbay at a
few biobeds. She quickly glanced away after taking a few steps toward the
office door.
Placing the cups on the table, he looked around for a chair, stepped
aside and pulled one forward. He grinned as he sat down. "Don't like using
that one!", he said indicating Rangi's chair with a tilt of his head, "...always
think she might walk in!" His grin deepened and he reached for his coffee.
Mai chuckled to herself and pulled up a chair and sat so across from
Scott. "That's a wise inquiry," she smiled back in return.
"I was talking to Rangi a while back," he said setting the cup down.
" She called from the base and was a little concerned."
Squirming around in her seat she answered, "Oh? What about is she
concerned of?" She wondered why his facial expressions were changing quick as
she sat there twiddling her thumbs while her hands were entwined in between each
other.
Scott stared at his cup for a moment, the grin gone from his face. He
shrugged and looked at her. "She wanted us to watch out for anything...odd
happening here. I'm not really sure what's going on ... but she thought there
was a chance that people might be getting ... well ... delusional was the word
she used." He looked at MaiKai hopefully.
{Hmm ... that's odd ... } she thought as she heard these words come
out of Scott's mouth. She picked up her mug with both hands clasped around it
and took a sip. { Ah ... better} she thought as she savored the taste of her
delightful coffee. "Oh .. thanks for letting me know. I'll take that into
consideration." She thought of what she saw of Shane and glanced over on the
opposite side of Scott.
Scott looked at her suspiciously. "You've noticed someone
acting...strangely ?" he asked. "Who? ... Where? ... When?"
Mai began to look down at the floor. Concerned about what Scott had
he questioned her so intensely. " Well, it's Shane," she looked quickly up at
Scott and waited for a reaction.
For a moment pure amazement flashed across his face. "The XO? ... You
mean Commander Guzman?", he queried as though there might be many 'Shanes' on
board and he wanted to be clear that they talked of the same one. As quickly
as it came, the expression of amazement left to be replaced by a wary
hesitation. "What was he doing?", he asked. His mind running into realms of what
could happen if the Commander went delusional.
Mai sat there and while being inquired; she swayed back and forth her
feet to keep occupied. "Yes, of course Commander Guzman. Well, he wasn't
dressed 'like himself' and he sure didn't act like it ... I'd say a bit more then
casual," she gave him what he wanted, an answers. She raised her mug once
more to take a drink as she glared at Scott.
"When was this?", Scott asked. He raised his cup and added, "I
thought he was on the base with Rangi," as he took a long drink.
"Well, he is now, but I saw him here the day Kaine went missing and
before I knew he was gone." Mai kept to the subject not trying to think of what
else was going wrong with her; she just wanted to get back to work so she
wouldn't have to worry about it.
Scott nodded slowly thinking: { So he went to the base with Rangi,
returned to the ship and then back to the base. If he's on R&R he 'would' be
dressed casually...and probably his mood would lighten up too...that's what's
happened.}
Satisfied with his own explanation Scott turned his head and smiled at
MaiKai.
"Yes, I heard about your dog," he said. "Gave security quite a run
around!"
Scott grinned down at the cup as he lifted it to drink what remained of the
coffee. He had only 'met' MaiKai's dog once and he drained his cup,
remembering the experience.
His remark of 'Nice Dog' had been met with an ominously low growl from
the Pitbull, whose muscles had seemed to ripple menacingly. Scott set the
empty cup onto the desk feeling glad that he had chosen a medical career rather
than one in security.
"How is the little guy?", he asked directing his familiar smile
at MaiKai.
{Little?... He must not have taken a good look at that dog..}. With a
slight grin on her face she took another sip of her coffee, then finishing it
setting it back down next to Scott's. "He's doing all right, a little
exhausted maybe," Mai said as she watched the expressions on Scott's face. {You
know ... He's kinda cute ...} she thought as she waited for a reply.
Scott laughed and said, as he stood up: "Whatever you say...I'm sure
he is!" He accepted the empty cup MaiKai offered and followed her out of the
office, his mood momentarily more serious as he said: "Mention Rangi's worries
to Mercedes if you see her first and we'll keep an eye open for anything ...
strange .. ok?"
"Yes, I understand, as soon as I see her I'll let her know," and with
that she winked at Scott and began to drift away from Scott as she turned
around.
He watched MaiKai's trim figure as she walked into the main ward,
raised and lowered his eyebrows and looked down at the two cups he held. He
headed for the replicator and watching the shimmer of light as they disappeared,
decided that although it was more than likely nothing to worry about at all, he
would, just the same, call Rangi and tell her what MaiKai had said.
