and CPL Johnson (NPC)
<<<OOC ok welcom to the ship TCN Zachery Morgan. There was a mixup in his
assignment but we have agreed he will be a member of the ODA. Departmen
Heads please take note>>

Cpl Johnson pressed the chime on the door. He had been given the task of
babysitting one of the newer members to the ships ODA, Some one by the name
of Morgan. 2Lt Acheson had ordered Johnson to take Morgan over to the area
of deck 11 where the alien intruders had been. They had noticed a strange
shape fixed to the wall and wanted an analysis. Acheson had thought it might
be a weapon of some sort, and who better than the ODA engineers to check it
out.
Tcn Morgan opened his door to find a Cpl standing there with a look of
complete joy on his face. He introduced himself and was told that his first
assignment on alpha shift would be. As they made there way around Deck
eleven Z realized that this item they were to investigate was near his
quarters. He had just gone on a run just a few hours ago and didn't notice
anything out of place. Z realized that is why he is a junior ODA crewman and
not a senior. Things to learn, things to learn.
As the two walked, Johnson asked. "So what is your name again? I was only
given your rank and last name. What do you prefer to be called in the team?"
Zach replies eagerly with, "Sir, Zachary Morgan is my full name, but I
prefer Z or Big Z, sir."
Cpl Johnson stopped dead in his tracks and turned to look at Morgan. "First
of all, you don't call me sir. I am an NCO (non commissioned officer) a
corporal. I work for a living." he replied with a half grin on his face. He
then turned back to the direction they were headed and continued to walk. "Z
? Well then Z it is. Just call me Josh.," he replied as they approached
their target.
Josh pointed at the wall to their left. "Look down the side of the wall
there. See that distortion?"
"Aye Josh, looks like a distortion field of some type. Never would have
caught it if you hadn't pointed it out." Z moved in with caution, running
his recorder as he went.
"Hmm, tell me what you know about it Josh and we'll see what we can piece
together?" Z stated as he knelt in front of the bulkhead was the device was
located.
Josh nodded to himself as Z talked. "Aye it was barley noticed by the team
that responded to the intruder alert. Lieutenant Acheson figured the
engineering team had their hands full with the ships power, so wanted us
to check it out," he looked to Z, " but you know that story."
Josh moved slowly around the distortion, "well we had not scanned it yet.
Only that two intruders were spotted right here. " Josh pointed to the floor
in front of the wall." "The ODA team responding to the intruder alert
notice the two intruders touching the wall, but they were not sure why until
they disappeared through that wall." josh pointed to the wall behind him.
Z gave that section an intensive scan, and noted a variation in subspace
around the bulkhead He then turned his attention to the device itself and
scanned for subspace fields and found that it existed in both." This thing
is in a state of flux, between subspace and our space."
Josh scratched his head, "interesting. I over heard one of my team members
talk about the wounded form the intrusion. They mentioned something about
their wound was in a flux of some kind." Josh pointed to the distortion,
"Just for safety sake, I would not touch it. The word is the wounded were
simply touched by the intruders and they fell ill." Josh looked at Z, "So
any idea what it is? I mean is it a bomb of some sort?"
"Hmm, I'm not a doctor but being put in a state of flux between subspace and
here could definitely screw someone up." "As for what this is I need to
run a few more tests to see. With it resting between solid states it makes
it hard to pin an exact analysis on it" Z worked feverishly for about
fifteen minutes and noticed something wonderful, (well not wonderful but
the fact of what it was became clear to him and that made his task
easy).
"This thing is collecting something." Z said with certainty. I need you to
run some scans with me to speed this up. Look for particles that you would
find around a starship and see if there are a concentration here, please"
Josh nodded. "Sure." he pulled out his tricorder and started scanning. Josh
then remembered about the change in the phaser settings. Josh turned off his
tricorder and popped open the back.
Z noted Josh's change in plans and asked, "Did you think of something I
missed, Josh?
Josh shook his head, "well, the intruders seemed to be effected but lowering
the frequency of the phaser beams. So what if we change our tricorders?"
Josh pulled a tool form his cargo pocket and thrust it in to the
tricorder. HE grumbled a bit as he talked. " now..mmm.. If I can reverse the
polarity of the scanning beam...ahhhhh... and lower the output
frequency....grrrrr. .. not that way idiot.." he mumbled. "There! He
quickly pulled the tool out and placed it back in his tricorder. He then
looked at Z.
"Ok the theory is this. I have reversed the scan beam to emit a low
frequency full spectrum pulse. IF we are lucky, we might be able to get the
device to phase in to a solid state long enough to get better scans."
Josh waited for Z's response.
"Excellent idea, Josh. Go ahead and start and I will scan and wait for any
result." "Even If it doesn't give use the perfect response it may yield
something."
Josh triggered his scanning beam and eagerly waited. Within a matter of
seconds the device was successful. The alien device became fully visible
and Z scanned with a giant grin on his face. Just as it went back to a
flux state Z had what he needed. "Veritan radiation particles, is what
it's collecting."
That and within seconds both of them were sick
Josh fiddled with his tircorder. He caressed it like some discarded puppy
needing tender loving care. He muttered to himself as he fiddled with the
settings trying to fine-tune it. He was able to get the device to phasing
to their space and he was trying to hold it there for as long as he could.
He was unaware of what happened next. He had heard Z talk but was not really
paying attending to him. As seconds passed Josh was beginning to feel dizzy.
His stomach started to twist and turn, like he had the antarian flu. His
tricorder began to get fuzzy in his eyes. "Z? I don't feel so good. May be
we should stop........ Josh fell over to one side, clutching his stomach
in his hands.
Z was knocked over as Josh fell into him, both were apparently Ill and very
confused. After a moment or so the upset stomach and blurred vision
subsided.
"The field that thing is emitting on top of the particles it's throwing
around to find what its looking for has to be what just caused that."
He of course was no doctor or even a nurse, but common sense said that
mixing flux inducing fields and strong radiation was bad.
Josh writhed in pain for a moment or tow until the effects started to wear
off. He then set up straight. "Aye, probably." he replied to Z. "Should
probably not do that again with out some sort of protection." he said trying
to smile. "So, did you get enough data? Do we have enough for a report?" he
asked.
"Aye, this definitely tells use what there were doing here. As to why they
were collecting these particles, I don't know." "It also should help the
medical staff with treatment of the affected crewman. I at least hope it
does."
"Anything else we need to do Cpl before we report back?" Z asked with a
grin.
Josh shook his head no." No you go and report this information back to 2LT
Acheson. I will stay here and see if I can figure a way to remove it."
