SH'min moved about the laboratory impatiently. They had lost their chance of
completing their task ahead of schedule and now had to rely on the only
source they had left. It was a slow and tedious process, extracting every
last drop of the particle form the foreigners place. HE turned and snapped
at L'pah, "SO what have the teams reported!"
L'pah did not even look up form his console. He was busy refining the
particles they had mined already, preparing it for the device. "The
extraction team says it is taking twice as long to retrieve the particles."
He looked up from his console for a moment. "They have found out the harder
they try ar extracting it, the lower the particle count goes. We just have
to be patient." He said sounding annoyed.
SH'min growled." And the aliens? What is the latest on them?"
L'pah continued with his work. " The scout teams have met little
resistance, though a few of them have returned with injuries to there limbs.
Ore doctors are checking in to it now. Not sure why this place seems to have
a way to hurt us, the other only stung, but these ones are actually burning
our people. " He looked up from his console again, "I guess you were right,
they are barbarians, intent on destroying us."
SH'min continued to pace about the lab. "And how many of them are there?
Have we neutralized them all?" L'pah reached back at tapped a button
urgently demanding attention. He then stepped forward a bit and responded. "
We know of 4 so far. Our patrols are searching every area they can, but
there appear to be a few places they cannot access with out suffering major
side effects.
SH'min stopped in front of L'pah." And the particle count? Can we spare any
to increase the portal? We cannot afford any of them from stopping us form
getting what we need?"
L'pah turned and looked back at his console. "Well, I could increase the
portal by 15 percent. That would only cost us about 5 percent of what we
have collected so far." He looked back at SH'min, "But that will add 4 more
hours on the collection time.
SH'min looked up and thought for a moment and then back at L'pah. "well we
have control of the source, and they have not killed any of us so far. I
think we can afford to wait a little longer. Do it!" he commanded. L'pah
nodded in compliance and then turned back to his console.
SH'min turned and headed off. Before leaving the room he shouted back,
"Mobilize the reserves, I want 20 soldiers over there to help the scouts.
They all need to pay for what they have done, every last one of them."
L'pah did not even look back, he simply nodded his head. He then tapped on
his console. "Activate 20 soldiers and have them report to the lab. We have
a task for them!" Someone acknowledged the request.
L'pah then looked to his right. He slid his tentacle up a brightly colored
panel. Through a window a blue-green pulsating circle grew in intensity. It
was their portal, their door way to the attackers realm. L'pah checked his
reading, quickly manipulating the controls to intensify the portal as he had
told SH'min he could do. He then waited for the soldiers to arrive.
