---Chimera Sickbay-
Keylor stood in the door way to sickbay. It appeared to be a mad house.
Every bio bed was filled and many people were sitting about, on chairs,
on the floor, the medical staff that had remained aboard were definately
overwhelmed.
There was barely room to move, save a few paths that the medical staff
traversed on a routing schedule, making occupation by an idle minded
person near to impossible. KEylro slowly moved in to the sickbay,
watching his step carefully.
Just two paces in, he saw Athena run at full speed past him and through
the door. Right on her heels was a security officer trying to catch her.
The spectacle caused Keylor to loose his balance temporarily. He
struggled not to fall over and soon regained his balance after propping
himself up with a passing nurse.
HE then looked around the sick bay and noticed Mercedes talking to Dr.
Desoto. Unsure how to get to her, Keylor decided to call Mercedes over
to him. "Dr carpenter! a moment please?" he called over the noise of the
several deranged patients.
Mercedes turned her head to the person who called out her name and
noticed it was Keylor. "Well, now that the Colonel is here he might as
well transfer Bridge controls to Sickbay seeing as we have half the crew
hauled up inside this place already," she said to Steve. Sickbay was a
mess and she was starting to feel a little out of control. The staff
were working overtime and everyone was getting to their breaking point.
"I'll be right back."
Making her way through the crowd in the claustrophobic Sickbay, she was
careful not to trip or step on anyway. "Can I help you with anything,
Colonel," she asked her CO, trying her best not to sound too tired and
irritable.
Keylor watched as Mercedes slowly approach. "Yes. You can start by
telling me how things are going. And idea how the cure you received form
the Simpson is working?" he asked in a somewhat impatient tone.
"It is having a positive effect on most patients we've administered it
too, but it's too soon to see any dramatic results," she explained.
"Ensign Oriana is in the most danger at the moment. She's been
stabilized and has been given the antidote, but it's working very slowly
on her physiology."
Keylor nodded, "That is good to hear. I would be remiss if we lost our
chief science officer. And our newest visitors from the freighter? how
do they appear to be? are they as effected as the rest of the crew." he
motioned to the room around them.
"The effect of the pollen appears to be greater on them," Mercedes
continued. "I assume on the station they were exposed to it longer than
the rest of the crew, and the longer the exposure to the pollen, the
greater the effects."
Keylor frowned at the remark. The first good new he received in a day
was the return of several of his crew. He was hopeful that some
questions could have been answered. But now he was being told they were
in worse shape than the crew he already had.
He looked around the room and noticed LT Foster sitting on a bed not far
away. "What about Foster? why is he here? I thought he had not been to
the station." he asked pointing to Andersen.
Mercedes glanced over at Andy. "He was exposed to the pollen when his
team investigated the decompressed shuttle we brought aboard. It came
from the flower they found onboard. Apparently his physiology is immune
to the effects of the pollen. He hasn't shown any symptoms at all."
Keylor raised an eyebrow. "Really? I knew he was 'special' but go
figure." He said. {Finally something positive out of all this chaos.} he
thought. "Well if you are sure he is immune, release him back to duty. I
am sure you can use the space." he stated. "is it safe to send some of
these people to their quarters? are they dangerous to themselves?"
"I wish I could, sir, but we need to observe their response to the
treatment. We have no idea how long each of them has been exposed; their
behavior is erratic and trying to get answers out of them is impossible.
Right now I feel it's best if they stay here. I think I might send out a
request for any unaffected crew with medical training to help us and
used one of the cargo bays as a triage."
Keylor nodded and looked back to Mercedes. "Very well. Once you release
LT Foster, he can compile a list of available crew. I will approve any
request for help you need. Get the help you need and take care of this."
He then noticed Rangi sleeping on a bio bed in the far corner. he
pointed. "And our CMO? how did she fair over all of this? Was she able
to provide any answers about the base, what is going on over there?"
he looked hopefully at Mercedes.
"Not much," Mercedes replied. "All she mentioned was 'crazy behavior'. I
assume it's the same type of behavior that the crew is displaying. I
think she's still too deeply affected to give a fully objective account
of what she experienced."
Keylor nodded again. "Well At least she is here," he glanced over at
her," and sleeping. hopefully in time she can provide more information."
he looked back to Mercedes, "And help with your analysis of this
problem." he passed for a second. "Speaking of the base, We will
probably have to cure those people as well. Once you have a good
understanding of this, you will need to help determine how we will try
to cure those on the base. If you need to synthesize more medicine, you
might need to start your preparations now."
"Aye, sir," Mercedes nodded. "I suggest that we ask the Simpson crew for
help with the base. There are a lot of potentially affected people and
we won't be able to handle them all by ourselves. I'll go over the stock
as soon as I have a moment to spare, though for now it looks like we'll
manage."
"Very well. Work with the Simpson medical staff and come up with some
recommendations. Also please let me know when the senior officers are
able to answer questions, I would like to know more about what it is
like on the base." He said glancing about the room. His eyes stopped on
one gaunt man in particular, it was Cameron. He pointed to him. "And
him? is he as effected as the rest? Irrational?" he wondered about the
man that once bludgeoned him.
Mercedes looked at Cameron. "Medically, I didn't find anything wrong
with him. He mentioned something about a rabbit, but that could just be
psychological."
Keylor nodded, "Well he has had a past history of mental illness. Once,
long ago he mistook me for some ancient earth hunter and accused me of
killing his tribe." HE looked closer at Cameron, "He used to be a
starfleet officer, but it looks like his problems have caused him to
take another path." He paused wondering how something like his problems
would effect Keylor if it had ever happened to him. HE then looked back
at Mercedes.
"Well if you have no objections I would like to speak to him. Preferable
away from here."
"Of course, sir. He's at no risk from what I can tell. He could do with
a good meal, though."
Keylor smiles. "Very well, I have taken enough of your time. Your
patients need you. Please keep up the good work and apprise me of any
new developments." he smiled weakly.
Mercedes nodded and returned the smile. "Aye, sir. I will do so. "
Keylor nodded and turned to a security guard standing at the door of
sickbay. "Please have that man, "He pointed to Cameron" escorted to the
mess hall. I will meet him there." the guard nodded and headed towards
Cameron.
