***Sickbay * USS Chimera *** "Recover them Sir?" Rangis voice had held a mix of surprise and doubt as she had handed the Colonel a cup of sweet tea.His visit to sickbay had held more than an interest in the pollen affected crew, for he had brought news of his own. Rangi sat opposite him as he explained his plans for action. They were to recover the missing crew from Kinsi. His simple statement had brought the expression of doubt to Rangis face but as she listened to the plan, her expression altered to one of consideration. Chimera would be cloaked and by flying closer to the base, they would be able to locate those they sought by short range sensors. They would search for bioscans from the transporter buffers. "All thirty of them Sir?...that's asking alot isn't it?" Keylor had nodded, said he realised the likelihood of finding everyone was slim but that he thought they stood a good chance of locating the majority. If there was a mistake and they transported a non crew member, then doubtless that person would need treatment anyway. Rangi asked if they knew the current conditions aboard the base. Keylor had replied 'no' and that following the few hysterical messages ordering the Chimera to withdraw, there had been no further communications. They had, he said,to expect that the situation was growing hourly worse. Rangi had questioned the idea of using the cloaking device. Acheson was to monitor it, she was told, once it had been thoroughly checked. Though it was a risk, it was one worth taking, for sitting around waiting was achieving nothing. They had to get their crew back and this was the only way. They would gamble on the fact that Cameron Sikes had relayed...that the base was unable to scan and its shields were down. He had sipped the tea, watching Rangi over the rim of his cup. {It could be untold chaos there by now} she had thought, her attention rivited on the small holograph standing on her desk. She had looked up at the Colonel and told him she would make ready both sickbays. "I'll organise my teams....and come to the Bridge." Taking a final gulp from his cup, Keylor had stood up, shaken his head and told her to wait in sickbay. He would call her when she was needed he said, but now she had two priorities..one to organise things and two..to get some rest. "I will Sir" she had replied seeing he was eager to leave and standing up herself "But I have some good news." Keylor had turned to face her. "Ensign Oriana.." Rangi had said in answer to the inquisitive look he gave her. "She's off ELS and improving." "That IS good news doctor." he had replied. "I'll send the report up Sir.....I was writing it as you came in" Keylor had nodded, hesitated and told her he was more than pleased by the way sickbay had handled everything. Rangi had thanked him and followed him to the door. He had bid her farewell and headed out of sickbay, acknowledging Scott as he passed. Rangi had returned to her desk, taken her seat and leaned back, folding her right arm across her waist and pressing her left hand fingers to her forehead. She remained so for some minutes, running over recent events in her minds eye........... [ Ensign Oriana had collapsed and it had soon become clear that her condition was critical.Only by quick use of the Emergency Life Support system had her life been saved.... Minutes had ticked by and very slowly her bio signs had became stabilised. The cause of her condition had puzzled them, for nothing had indicated the remotest possibilty that all her vital organs would shut down. The biobed, set for Vulcan physiology had constantly bleeped alarms as Orianas heart rate, normally 242 beats a minute, had slowed to 84 before the ELS cut in and stabilised her.Her blood pressure had dropped alarmingly, her breathing had virtually stopped. "It's like she's ..hibernating?" Scott had asked. He and Rangi had exchanged a look of dawning comprehension. "Yes" Rangi had replied slowly. "Ofcourse!...she has selfcontrol... she can regulate the amount of adrenaline....and slow down her internal systems. She can control her metabolism...go into a state of suspended animation." "And thats what she's doing now" Scott had said, transferring his gaze back to the Science officer. But what to do had been a problem. Scott had suggested a mind meld, reminding Rangi of a Vulcan science technician who had had a routine checkup a few days before they had docked at Kinsi. Rangi had vetoed the idea. "No...it's too risky. We dont know that the technician has the skills for that....no I cant risk something going wrong ...and losing both of them." Scott had sadly agreed. "We'll rely on our own skills" Rangi had said." We can rid her system of the pollen...keep her stable until shes clear of it...then revive her." ] And so it had proved. Rangi rubbed the tiredness from her eyes and sat up.She tried to remember who was where and doing what. (If the Colonels idea goes to plan then we're going to have another influx of patients} she thought, reaching towards the terminal and 'bringing it to' life with the touch of a button. Accessing the crew whereabouts she considered options. {mmmmm....Mercedes on Short Rest...right...Steve is down there now...so....Scott can go off duty ...and Maikai take charge here...yes...that will work. If I have Short Rest too....yes...} She tapped a second button, opening the communication channel. " Summers to Carpenter" There was a short pause before a sleepy voice replied: "Carpenter here." "Sorry to disturb you Mercedes...but theres been a developement. We're going to the base and aim to transport over all the missing crew. So I want you to prepare sickbay 2 for another influx of patients. There should be thirty plus." Another pause ended with a brighter sounding reply. "Will do Rangi...on my way" Rangi repeated the call, this time to the young doctor Maikai Quiocho. She gave the same information, but this time telling the AMO to take charge of sickbay 1. Again, there was an acknowledgement. Pleased with the progress,Rangi switched the channel and terminal off, stood up and headed for the office doorway...her quarters...and a sleep. *** End log *** LtCmdr Rangi Summers CMO/2XO USS Chimera
