<<This is the 3rd in a series of 3 emails, with the second being in
my backpack on a 3 1/2 inch disk, which I can't access because all
the internet computers available lack any word processors. Lousy
freshmen doing term papers at the last minute.>>
--- Bridge, USS Chimera ---
Nathan found himself hovering over the cloaking system on the ship,
as the Chimera moved into position. Cloaks were such finicky
things, especially after Starfleet designed newer anticloaking
measures, after a Federation starship was ambushed near Romulus,
some twenty years earlier. The trick was balancing the tachyon grid
to prevent too many particles from being released or to prevent too
many from accumulating.
He put it aside and looked at the sensor scans. He performed a
casual scan, just incase something peculiar would happen.
Suddenly, his console beeped. He relayed his findings to the Colonel:
<<snip>>
Keylor waited patiently in his chair as the time ticked by. He had
lost track of the number of peoplke transported from the station
when he heard LT Acheson pipe upform behind. "SIR! I think we have
a problem !" he called out. Keylor turned around and looked back
expectantly. "And that is?" he asked waiting for the remainder of
the news.
He looked down one more time before reporting:
"Sir I was scanning the station, seeing if ther lower torpedo tubes
were powered up, the ones aboe the main engineering section."
Keylor’s eyes perked, "You don’t think they have detected us do
you?" he asked.
"no sir, But:"
He hesitated for a moment, before choosing the words to use:
"I did notice apower surge in main engineering. Sir It apears they
have a warp core breach in progress."
Keylor stood up immediately, "Warp core Breach? Are you sure it is
not some sensor trick, like the one Cameorn Sikes tried to use?" He
waited patiently. Keylor noticed Andersen look up breifly form the
consol, then back down with a little more stern determination
looking in his face.
He nodded and looked down, trying to determine if the problem was authentic.
"No sir I am fairly certain this is real, and if my sensors are
reading it right, I don’t think they have five minutes before it
explodes." Nathan said.
"Lieutenant Achseon, drop the…." He started to ask for the cloak to
be dropped to increase the sensor effeciency when Acheson
interupted.
He was about to look up, when a sensor reading came to his
immediate attention.
"SIR! The CORE. Some one just ejected it. But it does not have a
lot of velocity. At its current rate, the station will most likely
sustain severe damage to the lower 8 decks. " He looked up at
Keylor , "Sir, I don’t think the station could take that much
damage." He added.
The tone with which he said that seemed to permeate the bridge,
bringing about an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.
Keylor hesitated for only a second. "Drop cloak. Bring the tractor
beams online and lock on to the core." Keylor then spun around to
the front. "Helm, pout us in position for a tow, then plot the
straightest path away form here. "
Acheson nodded and deactivated the cloaking device. The ship
decloaked directly in front of the Starbase.
"Locking tractor beam on the core .... got it! Tractor beam
engaged, sir" he called out, triumphantly. "Raising shields.
Captain, I recommend yellow alert."
Keylor adjusted himself in his seat. "Ok everyone excitement for
the day is over. Helm take us back to the station. Lieutenant
Andersen, damage report please. Lieutenant Acheson, Scan the
station, with their core gone I doubt they have the power for
phasers, and if we positions ourselves properly , torpedoes should
not be a problem at close range."
"I agree, sir."
He looked back on his station.
--- 3 minutes later ---
The Chimera arrived at the station.
"Sir, sensor readings indicate that main power is down. They have
no shields and their only power support can't sustain very many
phaser blasts. Permission to lower shields and allow the transports
to commence."
Colonel Bretam looked over to Acheson: "Permission granted. Recover
the remaining personnel."
He lowered the shields and waited impatiently, as the large
starbase loomed in the vicinity. The base looked so majestic, and
yet the base could do so much damage to the ship if it were to open fire. The disparity of that brought a slight grin to Acheson's face.
