===== Main Engineering, SB Kinsi =====
Shane was sitting in a soft chair behind an engineering console with an almost resigned facial expression. For the last 20 minutes he tried again to persuade the engineers to take care about the eminent waro core breach ... but with no success. All the engineers were like addicted to the little domino leauge they were playing and Shane was only like a bussing fly for them. Luckily noone decided to squash that fly ...
Shane half expected an engineering team from the Chimera materalising in Engineering ... somehow he always trusted that in the last minute something will happen to prevent the warp core breach ... you know ... like it worked always for the Enterprise, DS9 or Archer ... but slowly he came to the conclusion that today WASNT his lucky day.
He barely resisted the irge to go berserk ... for a minute it looked like a good idea ... but then ... feeling his weakness, he almost started to cry. He was still young and nice looking ... ok, still young and he doesnt wanted do end on a station like Kinsi in an forgotten corner of the federation space. Shane thought about all the crew and civilians on the base and about Rangi. Noone deserved a fate like this ...
Noticing that the computer announced the warp core breach in 5 minutes, Shane slowly turned towards the console. There was only one thing to do now. Ejection. But Shane spend too much time on Starbase 742 not to know that a station WASNT supposed to eject its core. Sure, it was possible ... but it was nothing SF engineers caunted much with. The point in ejecting one's core was the fast that on a flying ship ... the core would be ejected and teh ship would do its best to fly away from that area ... so the final detonation of the core wont harm the ship.
The trouble here and now was that Kinsi was NO ship, Kinsi couldnt fly away. Shane was no engineer of course, but he was quite sure that the ejected core wont have thrusters to move it forward ...
Tapping the console, Shane prepared the launch sequence. Luckily the domino game with isoliner chips had little effect on the ejecting routine. It almost seemed that the core could be ejected with enough speed to reach a safe distance before detonating. Shane smiled at the little screen with all the nummers. Shane forgot about all the engineers and other personel in Engineering and focused all his (flickering) attantion to the console. He knew that a wrong step could result in ... nothing.
Nothing for the whole station ... cause there WOULD be nothing instead of the station.
He displayed the schematics of the ejecting mechanism and tried to run a level 5 diagnostics. [failure, please repeat your action] replied the computer. Shane looked sideways at the engineering bunch and groaned.
{OK, have to forget about a diagnostics and have to trust my luck} he thought as he tapped the last button.
[Warp core ejecting routing engaged] announced the somewhat annoyed computer voice. Staring on the screen like seeing rosa rabbits dancing polka, Shane watched over the routine's progress. {As far so good} he thought.
Green light.
Yellow light.
Yellow light.
Green light.
Yellow light.
Green light.
Red light.
{Shit!} Shane thought and smashed the console in anger. "Damn fools you!" he cried out aloud. Noone payed him real attentention and Shane had no suitable target to release his anger. He cursed again and looked angrily at the reading on his screen. The last part of the sequence ... where the core should be 'pushed' out from the station wasnt done properly. The core was ejected ... and was flying away from the station ... but no with enough speed.
Shane sighed. His look chamged to somewhat blank as he read the computer's estimation about the distance where the core will detonate. "Not enough" he muttered. The computer was an artifact and it showed you whatever you requested withouth delay or hesistation. It displayed the estimateed damage to the station swiftly and precisely. A third of the station would be blown away and the rest would be without energy or life support ... or will would explode as well.
For a moment he had the idea of releasing teh grounded ships from the station. even if there was virtually no time for a ship to undock from teh base and get a safe distance from the detonation, it was a try worth. He tapped a button or two just to find out that from his current location, he had no access to the flight ops controls.
He jumped from his seat ... his adrenaline level reached the 'berserk' stage and he shouted loud: "Youuuuu foooooooooo"
A blue haze enveloped him for a moment and the next thing he saw were the gray walls of an interpid class ship's transporter room.
"ooooooooools" his cry was beamed with him as well.
For a moment the assembled offices in the transporter room froze in surprise, but in the next moment two security guards catched Shane and said: "Commander, please quiet down. Medical will take care of you ..."
"What!" Shane cried out loudly "What the heck!" he tried to shake the two security man down. "Commander please ..." was the last thing he noticed.
OK, it was the quiet his of an hypopray puting him to sleep that was the last thing he noticed.
