Rangi had almost completed her duty and was clearing her desk. A figure
crossed the small part of sickbay visible through the open office doorway.
Rangi moved quickly around her desk and stopping at the entrance to her room
called quietly. "Maikai?" When the young doctor turned at the sound of her
name. Rangi beckoned her "A word please?"
Looking back at the stack of padds needing to be done she replied, " umm
sure." She walked into the office and stood standing awaiting for her
gestures and replies.
Rangi smiled reassuringly as Maikai approached and stepped aside for her to
pass into the office. "Please...take a seat." She closed the door and moved
back to her own seat.
MaiKai sat down in a seat across from the CMO's desk. Feeling curious about
what's going to be asked of her.
"I wanted to talk to you about your recent action on the research station"
Rangi said quietly, resting her forearms on the desk top and interlinking
her fingers. "Firstly..... What you did was very brave. It was a selfless
outstanding act but.....it was also very foolish." We are medical officers.
Our job is to save lives...preserve lives...not put our own at risk."
"Yes, ma'am. I did think of that while on the team and that situation.
However, we needed a plan and standing around waiting to see if something
was going to take a slight gesture," Mai replied. She wasn't trying to
sound smart, she was only stating what she thought was right at the time to
do and she acted upon it.
Rangi paused and looked down at her fingers, working out the best to state
what was in her mind. Once again she met Maikai's gaze. I'm not trying to
belittle what you did..it was extremely brave ... and it worked.." Rangi
smiled at the figure opposite her. "....but you have to remember that you
were the only medical officer in charge of not one but TWO away teams.
That's a great responsibility in itself." You had an injured marine..
Private Pillow and surely you could see that Commander Guzman wasn't well?
Colonel Bretam was also on the station, so you had not only the executive
officer but the commanding officer of this ship in your care. Did you stop
to think of that?"
"Guzman might have not looked so well, but it could have been his nerves
getting to him in a troubling situation, besides he signaled to me he was
fine. I did help Pvt. Pillow I wrapped her ankle up and gave her a
hypospray I am waiting for her to stop in so I can take a look at her foot.
So, yes, I considered it, but I'm sure besides me the rest of the away team
members rather not stand around trying to come up with a better idea. I
know your concerns and well beings of others and so do I. I acted on the
best advantage I could," she replied. Mai was only trying to explain to
Rangi that she did think of everrything before she acted, but she didn't
quite think that. Maybe she was coming off to strong about the situation,
she didn't quite seem to take meaning into that matter at the moment.
Rangi sat back in her chair and considered the AMO in silence. A few seconds
ticked by."I know its hard to judge things in the heat of the moment. I know
it's virtually impossible sometimes to stand by when you want to act. But it
wasn't your place to be a decoy...brave though it was...There were marines
there.... engineers....other ways it could have been done. We're not here
for heroics.."
{I hope she understands what I'm getting at} Rangi thought seeing the
expression on Maikai's pretty face.
"Yes, I know we're not here for heroics, seems why I didn't flaunt myself
around unlike some people aboard this ship. I'm sorry Rangi I really am I
just don't seem to see why if I understand my pros and cons of what I did,
why would I possibly need this lecture accept for the reassurance from you
that I thought I had already?" MaiKai answered. { Heroics..I don't want to
be praised. Hell, if I wasn't proud for being recognized, I would have
returned my award} she thought to herself of Rangi's words still looking at
her to keep good eye contact.
Again there was a pause. Rangi held Maikai's steady look determined to get
across what she wanted the young doctor to understand. "I have to say this
bluntly.." she began, "I need to know that in future when you're part of an
away team you will never put your own safety in jeopardy unless ordered to
so, by a senior officer. By putting yourself at risk you effectively
jeopardized the safety of the away teams...the XO...the CO. All of them.
Maikai..as Medical Officers, we have our own job to and we do it to the very
best of our capability. If that means swallowing down our instinct to act,
then that's exactly what we do..Your expertise is needed on an away team
they count on it...they rely on it..at all times..Please think about that
and remember it..... next time."
Mai nodded, but remained silent.
Rangi knew Maikai would see this as a bitter reprimand. She gave a small
smile that said...congratulations on your promotion and award. "Believe it
or not...I DO think they were both well deserved...honestly."
"Oh, well, thanks. Now if you don't mind I have things to get done," and
with a simple face not trying to look discouraged, she gave a nod and walked
out proceeding to go take care of the patients.
Rangi sighed a long sigh and watched her walk away.
