*** Deck 9 * USS Chimera ***
After Scott left her office, Rangi spent a while reading through some of the ever increasing reports that landed on her desk now she was AXO. She now fully understood the longing Shane sometimes had to return to a more active role...in his case tactical...sooner than the desk job that the XO position demanded.
She had taken up at last,a padd sent from Marine Captain Walsh and read a long and detailed report about a recent training exercise carried out in holodeck 1.
It took all of her concentration because the subject was really out of her league, but she waded through it to the end, where she found an addendum..... and it was that that now caused Rangi to be walking purposefully along deck 9 towards the captains office.
As she rounded a corner, Rangi saw the man she sought walking towards her with the nonchalant attitude he had.Raising her chin a little, she slowed her steps and as the captain drew nearer said to him:
"Ah Captain Walsh...just the man I wanted to see. You've saved me a journey."
Jack gave a brief salute and looked down at the young woman in front of him, a questioning expression on his face. Rangi reached into the black standard issue shoulder bag she carried and fished out a padd.
"I wanted to ....discuss this with you." she said holding it out to him and watching him as he studied the heading and recognised it as the report he had sent to her earlier that day.
"The report is thorough and clearly written." she began noticing a glimmer of a smug expression form on the corners of his mouth. "...but I was a little confused as to the addendum." she added and looked at the padd herself as though it might now be clear to her.
A moment passed and she raised her eyes to see Capt Walsh frowning at the padd, confusion replacing the smugness.
"It threw me at first." she admitted, in a somewhat pleasant, conversational tone, ".... and then I wondered if you'd sent it thinking it would be of medical interest to me."
She waited for a reply, knowing full well he couldnt give one for he wouldnt understand one word of her explanation.
She looked steadily into his eyes giving no clue as to her thoughts when she went on.
"The...' women' in question ....do indeed seem to possess some heightened anatomical features...quite remarkably so in one case."
She saw the first clue hit home as the marine straightened up ever so slightly.
"...and some of them...well.." she gave a small shrug and he knew what was coming this time..
" ....I can only describe them as contortionists."
She saw him swallow.
"Then I realized that you probably hadn't meant to send it to me at all...had you captain?" she asked, hiding her amusment at his obvious discomfiture
"...and I DO hope, that having.. 'mistakenly' ..added it to a report, it does not imply that you were studying the....'literature'... whilst on duty?"
There was a long pause while he met the steady blue unblinking gaze she held him with.
He began to form a word but Rangi effectively silenced him before he had chance to say anything by adding..
"Perhaps you'd like to ammend it." and pressed the padd into his hand.
"Captain" she said with a small nod of dismissal.
"Ma'am." he managed to say as she began to walk away in the direction from which she had come.
He looked down at the padd in his hand and was suddenly struck with full force by the knowledge that not only had he sent a copy of his favourite 'mens magazine' to the AXO but at the same time, she was the girlfriend of the Acting Commanding Officer.
He closed his eyes against the bad dream and when he looked again, she had disappeared from sight.
