===Sick bay==
Gary walked in to the sick bay in a rush. He had been so engrossed in
his training program for the Romulan private he had lost track of time
and was now running late. He was not sure about the CMO and the
statements made by the operations officer when he first joined the ship.
Gary had no idea who was going to conduct the physical, but in the end,
the cmo was responsible and Gary wanted to give her little reason to
come hunt him down.
He stopped half way into the sick bay and looked around, no one could be
found.
{Hrm. now I know I am late, so where is everyone else? Wonder if the CMO
is as strict on her department members as she is on the crew for showing
up for a physical} he thought
Ten minutes earlier, Rangi had returned to sickbay where she had chatted
to Steve and Lucy for a few minutes. Lucy had then gone off duty, Anne
Robinson had replaced her and Steve had disappeared in the direction of
the lab.to continue his work.
Rangi spent a moment surveying her department.
There was actually little to survey because it was empty of patients and
so as quiet as a grave.Even so, her eyes scanned the room, taking in
every detail. Satisfied that all was well, she glanced at the time and
with the faintest frown of displeasure headed to her small office where
the pile of XO related padds were stacked neatly waiting her attention
She ordered an apple juice from the replicator, moved to her desk and
sat in the green leather chair to begin work. from outside came a sound
of hurrying feet and Rangi raised her head looking towards to open door.
As Gary waited for some one to tell him where to go, he noticed a fair
haired woman dressed in teal walk into the office , presumably the cmo
office, and replicate something and sit down. Not sure who it was, he
assumed it was at least the doctor on duty. Gary looked around once
more, wondering why the person had not seen Gary standing there. Puzzled
as to his apparent invisibility, he slowly walked up to the door.
Approaching gingerly, he rapped gently on the frame and leaned a bit
past the open doorway and in. "Excuse me. I am here for a physical." he
said with a half smile.
"Petty Officer Williams.." Rangi stood up, set the pad in her hand on
the desk top and moved towards the door. "I'm Dr Summers....the CMO..and
acting XO...welcome aboard." She gave a polite smile and indicated with
slender fingers, that they return to the main room.
Gary kept the half smile plastered on his face. {OH crap! the CMO. I bet
you she was just ignoring me because I was late. I wonder what she will
do to me?} he thought. keeping his shoulders steady, he slowly moved his
feet underneath him and straightened up. "Thank you ... Commander," he
hesitated reading the rank off her collar.
As Rangi approached, Gary took a few small steps back and turned to one
side, waiting for the doctor to direct him to where she desired. Gary
half wondered if the doctor would manifest some medieval torture table
for his physical as punishment for being tardy.
Rangi looked at him as she passed, noticing the rather sickly smile on
Garys face.
"Biobed one." she said hiding a smile herself {he's scared!} she
thought and led the way. "Please take a seat...on here." she said
tapping the bedside. She turned and picked up the waiting med pad,
glanced up as the over bed display lit up and looked back at her
'victim'.
Gary toddled along behind the doctor as she pointed out where he would
go. Like a good little puppy, he hopped up on the bio bed and sat, legs
hanging over the foot of the bed. He watched as the doctor busied
herself about the bed, activating sensors, gathering tools and preparing
for what to her must have been a routine task. Gary sat quietly and
patiently, ready for anything she threw at him.
"So...how are you settling in?" Rangi asked switching the med pad on and
reading the heading, {Gary..that's it} she thought, satisfied to have
found the name that eluded her.
Gary kept his eyes forward,"Very well commander. The trip here was
un-eventful, my commanding officer is amiable, and in general the ship
appears well organized." he chirped off like a robot.
Rangi glanced at him sideways on. {I hope he's not one of these 'dont
show me a hypospray' types} she thought noting the dead ahead gaze he
maintained.
"Good" she said and read down the history in silence. After half minute
had passed she said "Hmmmmmm...ok....please lie back?"
Gary pressed his palms into the bed and lifted himself up. He then
vaulted his body back so that he could stretch out on the biobed with
out his legs dangling over the edge.
Then looking out of the corner of his eye he looked over to the doctor.
"So doctor... if I may ask, what is the unofficial policy of ships crew
interacting on a personal level with other crew? Some of the more
militaristic ones tend to discourage social interplay."
"There's no objection." she replied noting the readouts above their
heads "...so long as it doesn't interfere with duty of course." She
looked down at him. "Have you any problems that aren't mentioned in this
history?" she asked and activated a tricorder holding it above his chest
and reading the result.
"I met a young crewman here the other day. A Crewman Lucy Flemming, a
lovely gal. Thought I might ask her out. What do you know of her?" he
asked while the doctor scanned him.
Rangi paused for a second and looked down at her patient partly
surprised. Lucy?...she's a nurse here." Rangi returned her attention to
the tricorder."...and I hardly think I can pass comment on..." Her words
broke off and she spun round at the shudder of the ship. Quickly the
lights in the sickbay dimmed and red lights flashed in the corners of
the room. "Red Alert" she cried, dropping the tricorder onto the bedside
and glancing at the petty officer.
Gary felt the ship move, and grabbed the sides of the bed instinctively.
He then noticed the red lights flashing out of the corner of his eyes.
As quickly as the doctor had called out the alert, Gary was on his feet.
His mind was racing with things he needed to do. Gary looked over to the
doctor, "Ma'am, I think my physical will have to wait, I need..." was
all he was able to say before the ship shook more violently. {Man some
one is trying to make a point.} he thought.
Rangi grabbed hold of the edge of the bed at the second violent shudder.
"Indeed" she replied glancing to where Steve and Anne were hurrying
towards them.
Gary barely acknowledged her, he simply started moving towards the
sickbay doors. By now he had calculated that the best place he should go
was the armory. Though the oda would be moving about the ship to help
with injured crew, they also had to arm themselves incase some one
decided to board the ship. Since Walsh seemed to have the same mind as
Gary, he figured that was where Walsh would send all of the off duty oda
members. Just as Gary reached the door he heard a call come in over the
main comms in the sickbay.
+TAPS+ Consul Guzman to sickbay. There is an medical emergency on deck
6, section 9 . A woman is badly burned here. I give her first aid.
Steve slowed to a stop in front of her as Rangi tapped her com badge to
reply to martins call. She saw Maikai rush through the main door and
look at them worriedly.
+Taps "Summers to consul guzman. I'm on my way." she turned to the two
amo's. "Prepare for casualties." she said, knowing they knew what to do
without instruction " One burn victim 'at least'...possibly others."
Steve nodded as did Maiaki. Rangi turned for the door. Crossing the room
quickly, she veered towards her office and reached inside and grabbed a
med kit sitting just inside the door. "Petty officer!" she called and
ran to where Gary stood ." I'm needed on deck 6 and might require your
assistance".
Gary Looked back at the lieutenant commander and her command {Well I
guess they can issue weapons with out me for a little while.} Gary
thought. "Yes Ma'am." He replied and let her pass and then followed her
out in to the hall and to a turbo lift.
Rangi's mind was working overtime. Who was firing on them? Why? What
damage had been done? How many injured? Had the Bridge crew suffered
casualties? They came to the turbo lift and waited for th door to open.
Rangi tapped her combadge
+Taps+ Summers to carpenter and fisher. Report to sickbay..I'm on deck
6...prepare standard procedure. The doors opened and Gary followed her
into the lift.
"Deck 6"...The turbo lift moved smoothly away but four seconds later
another shudder...more violent than the last..caused Rangi to press her
hands against the wall for support. She looked at Gary. "I want you to
come with me...there are bound to be other casualties with the ship
under fire like this."
The ride was only one floor down, but it seemed like it took forever.
The ship shook at least once more and the turbo lift lights flickered,
as if ready to shut down. As the lift stopped and the doors opened, Gary
watched as the doctor walked out, he followed closely behind. As he
turned to the right, and the lift doors started to close, he stopped
suddenly and looked back in to the lift {What was that? That noise? An
eps conduit?} He though. The doors closed, and Gary stared at the lift.
"Petty officer!" he heard From behind him as the doctor called out
several feet away. Gary dismissed the noise and hurried to catch up with
the doctor.
Rangi glanced left and right along the main corridor of Deck 6. She
broke into a run, turning right, attracted by the sound of voices. Gary
reached the corner first and slowed. Rangi ran up to him and saw what he
looked at. A woman, judging from the long blonde hair, lay on the floor
attended by Shane's brother martin. He looked at them as they hurried
forward.
"She is badly burned " Martin said looking down at the woman. It was an
understatement. Rangi knelt down beside them, opening her med kit and
taking out a tricorder as she did so. Martin leaned back on his heels
and ran his hand through his hair, frowning at the injured woman." I
need cordrazine..in there..." she pointed to the medkit and martin
reached inside searching quickly for what she asked for. "That one...no
that one..yes can you get 2cc's. He nodded and concentrated on the
hypospray, handing it to her as soon as it was loaded.
Gary stopped short as the doctor stopped at the injured. Gary looked at
the man kneeling on the floor and felt he was perfectly fine. The smell
of charred flesh and hot electrical filled the air as well as a hint of
smoke the wisps across the ceiling. Feeling the doctor was in control of
the injury, Gary tapped on his comm badge.
+Taps+ "Petty officer Williams to Operations. There seems to be a blown
EPS conduit on deck 6 section 9. You might want to send a fire control
team down here to check for secondary fires."
+Taps+ "Acknowledged." Came the curt reply.
Gary then started to look about for others who might need to be in need
of assistance. Staying within visual distance of the doctor, Gary moved
to each of the nearest intersections of the corridor the doctor was in.
He saw nothing in any direction. {Good. No other apparent injuries} he
thought. He then returned to The Doctors side awaiting further
instruction.
Two more shudders of the deck told them the battle continued. "I cant do
anything else here" Rangi said " She needs to be in sickbay...and fast."
Martin stood up " A site to site transport?" Rangi nodded.and tapped her
own combadge +Taps Summers to sickbay. Transporting burn victim...third
degree covering 20% upper body. Maiaki acknowledged the call
immediately. Rangi stood up.
+Taps+ Summers to transporter room Site to site transport one injured
crewman on deck 6, section 9 a half a meter in front of me.
+Taps+ Transporter room here, Acknowledged.
Martin Stood silently, wearing a concerned look as the woman shimmered
and disappeared. As the transport finished, Martin looked back at Rangi.
"Do you think she will be ok?"
"Yes" Rangi answered truthfully "...but how well she recovers is hard to
say. You saw her condition." Martin sighed. "You did well." Rangi said.
"She was lucky you were here to help her so quickly." he nodded but did
not look convinced.
Martin nodded. Well I better get to my room, if there is any thing left
of it. IF you see my brother, let him know I am fine and where I am." He
said with a slight smile. "Though I bet I am the least of his concerns
right now." He said as the ship shook. Martin placed a hand on the wall
and steadied himself. He then turned and slowly started on his way to
his quarters.
Gary watched as the body of the injured woman sparkled out of view.
Satisfied that the emergency had passed, Gary figured he could graceful
excuse himself. HE started to walk back to the list as the doctor and
the man talked breifly. He had only taken a few steps back when the
doctor turned and followed him. Gary looked a bit impatient. "Well
doctor if you will excuse me I and things I must attend to." As the ship
shuddered again." Gary looked about.
"I wish we knew what was going on" Rangi said half to herself. She
glanced at Gary. "This is a diplomatic mission...so much for diplomats"
She wondered again what was happening on the Bridge. No call for her
meant that the bridge crew were, as yet, unharmed. But all the same, she
wished she could and see for herself.
As the two walked quickly to the lift Gary's comm badge chirped. "Walsh
to Williams,! Where the Hell are you!" cam an impatient call. Gary
tapped his comm badge. "Deck 6...section 8 heading to you." He said
quickly. {Damn now he thinks I am slacking.} he thought. Walsh
continued. {The bridge has just ordered an evacuation of Deck 5. I am
sending Mcknight and a team up there to sweep the deck. Go to deck 5 and
assist the evacuation and then report back here with the team." He
barked at Gary. "Acknowledged sir!" he replied back. Gary looked over at
the Doctor. "Well I guess you will need to find a temporary place to set
up shop." He said.
{Evacuating deck 5?..oh great!} Rangi rubbed hitched the med kit more
securely onto her shoulder. "It would help if we knew what damage there
was." she replied. "We can set up a temporary sickbay in a cargo
hold...but not until we know the state of the ship."
Gary thought about the CMO's problem and stopped in front of the lit
doors. There was a slight silence, with the exception of the ship
shaking and sparks coming form down the halls. He then looked over at
the doctor. "I don't think this is working, lets move to the next." He
said motioning down the hall. The doctor started off at a quick pace and
Gary followed, a step behind her he spoke. "Doctor? Might I suggest the
Laboratories on Deck 9? You should find tricorders and other items of
use there. And if you need medical supplies, we have a small limited
assortment in the oda Equipment room on that very deck." He waited for
her answer.
She nodded agreement. "That's one option " she answered coming to the
next lift. "This isn't working either!" she said and glanced quickly at
him " Jefferies tube then" and turned away, moving quickly to the hatch.
As they reached the nearest jeffries tube, Gary opened the hatch and
pointed inside, "Doctor you should head to where you want to set up
shop. I have to go back to deck 5. I suggest you call your staff and
inform them of where to go and coordinate with the transporter room to
beam your injured there." He said as the Doctor climbed inside.
Rangi scrambled into the tube." I'll go to deck 9" she said crawling
away from the hatch opening."...and check things there. We need to clear
sickbay as soon as we can..that woman needs treatment..."
Gary nodded. " If I can I will warn your staff of the move to the lab.
Hopefully the woman can be transported again." He watched as the doctor
crawled down the ladder. He then crawled in to the tube and headed back
up one level.
