With the lightest of bumps, the runabout touched down on Nimbus II, and
dust began to rise and surround the shuttle. The sun was out in full,
and it was very hot, he tapped away at the console for what he needed,
and found it. He tapped his commbadge gently and said, "Lt Quince to
Ensign Goldheart, do you read?." The compin beeped, and a reply soon
came to acknowledge the message. Barbillus reported that the runabout
had come to collect the young officer from the science post, en route to
the USS Chimera.
Within minutes, Ensign Goldheart was in the small ship, and Quince was
powering up the engines, ready to set off. Ensign Goldheart and himself
were the Chimera's new helm officers, and he intended to make good time.
He was off the planet in five minutes, laying in a course for the last
known co-ordinates of the USS Chimera, and he engaged it, at warp 8.9,
leaving an ETA of 9 hours. Once his short range sensors were clear of
anything, he set it to autopilot and then spun his chair 90 degrees to
Ensign Goldheart. Ensign Goldheart was a young, human, quite nervous
looking, a short man by any means, Barbillus smiled, "So.. Was Nimbus II
your first assignment?" he asked, the Ensign nodded and quickly began to
explain all about it, "Aye sir, we were developing new shuttle engines
at the science base, we managed to increase the engine efficiency by 4%
while still increasing speed and decreasing size.
Barbillus smiled, and nodded, "I know of your engines, Ensign," he said,
motioning to the runabout around him, "I myself have spent the past year
developing this runabout on Earth, Starfleet's strongest runabout", he
said. Turning away, Ensign Goldheart looked down at the console,
worried, "I hope so" he said, "recieving a distress signal, origin about
2 Spacial Units from the Chimera's last known position, audio only."
Quince sighed, his first day assigned to the Chimera, and this. He
played the message, "This is the USS Chimera, we have been.." was all
that one could hear, it was stopped by some kind of dampening field.
Barbillus got up and went to the Engineering console at the back of the
cockpit, he tapped a few buttons, and then smiled, "Auxilliary
matter/antimatter reactor online, Auxilliary warp core online." He then
went to the front and sat down, engaging warp 9.6, he would be at the
Chimera in 4 hours, but a lot could happen in four hours.
