-=/\=- Sickbay -=/\=- Steve drained the last drops from his cup of coffee, looked around the temporary Sickbay and expelled a long breath. He had ended his duty and intended to get some sleep, that was long overdue. Steve knew Rangi was back in the main Sickbay and wondered how things were going there. Placing the empty cup into the replicator, he thought for a second that there was a malfunction, for the unit seemed to flash red, but next moment came the Red Alert alarm and Steve glanced back at the room with concern. MaiKai hurried through the corridors and managed to use a slow moving lift that took her to Sickbay. She rushed through the doors and noticed Steve as she carried Kaine. She walked over in his general direction and took a concern look around as the red alert alarming lights still flashed. Steve took a step or two in Scott's direction, but a figure at the doorway caught his eye. {MaiKai} he thought and frowned as he watched the young woman's progress for she was limping badly. {What's that she's carrying? ... It looks like...ahhh...} "MaiKai!", he called and hurried over to her as she stood looking around uncertainly. "Steve, thank God, my dog he's badly hurt," Mai managed to say as she saw Steve look from the pile in her arms to her knee. "I'm fine really ... are there any available biobeds where I can lay him down, so I can get a closer look," MaiKai waited with anticipation for a response from Steve. "There aren't any biobeds ... but ... " Steve glanced around, "... Bring him over here." Steve walked quickly towards some cargo crates and patted the top one. "Lay him here," he said. MaiKai looked at the spot Steve suggested with question, but decided in the circumstances the best place for him to be placed. Mai laid him down and reached for a tricorder near by. MaiKai looked over his body and noticed a few breaks in his hind legs. She didn't think amputation was needed, but certainly more care put into mending them. With a slight worry in her eyes, she glanced over at Steve. Steve and Kaine had an uneasy relationship ... they avoided each other. In reality it was Steve who did the avoiding, but both were happy with the arrangement. Now, he looked at the dog and then at it's owner. "Let me scan him ... you need to sit down ... What's happened to your leg? I thought it had been treated," he asked. MaiKai looked at her leg carelessly, "I ... uh ... just bandaged it." Knowing she couldn't get away with that ridiculous response, she shrugged and hopped up on a counter near by to use it as a seat. "Bandaged it?" Steve looked at her in disbelief. "Well, ... I suppose he's worse than you are at the moment," he said looking at the unconscious dog, " ... but you need attention too." Steve switched on the tricorder and began a preliminary scan. "Three fractures in left hind leg ... laceration of chest ... and ... " he stopped, paused, and looked at MaiKai, " Two missing teeth," he added. {Oh, wonderful ... Broke the family dog} Mai said to herself with a slight smirk, but in all seriousness she frowned again. "What do you think we should do, Steve?" she asked. "Simple enough to treat him," Steve said while thinking that a pitbull with two teeth missing was a step in the right direction. He checked the dogs body mass, tapped a quick calculation into the tricorder and said, "I'll give him 2cc's of rexlin ... that'll keep him sedated, but stable for a while. Now, doctor ... let's look at the knee." {Aww man ... I'm pretty sure I damaged my leg pretty bad ... Grrr ... I hate doctors ... Why am I one?} MaiKai thought to herself with little to none amusement. She glance over at Steve, "Is this really necessary?" she questioned him again. "What do you think?" he asked not entirely light heartedly. Once again, the faint humming of a scan began. "Hmmm," Steve said then, " I see," he snapped the scan off and looked at MaiKai's face. "You're out of action," Steve stated, pointed at her knee, and handed her the scanner where his results were still displayed. "A couple of days at least say...wouldn't you?" he asked as a slight grin appeared on his face. "Ummm ... no ..." even though she probably should be laid off work for a while, Mai didn't think it was all that bad. She looked back at Steve who wasn't really amused, so MaiKai smirked a little of a smile. He shook his head and sighed, "When Rangi sees it, you're in trouble," he said. "She doesn't 'do' heroics." Steve looked deadly serious at his fellow AMO then gave a smile in return. "What would you suggest doctor...if you were treating 'you'?" he asked as if he knew better already. "Heh ... not sure about that one," in all seriousness, MaiKai wasn't sure what she would do, but she certainly wouldn't put herself off work. {What am I supposed to do if I'm not working, huh? Sit around and attempt to clean the ruins of my room!} she thought as if she were really talking to Steve in front of her. Mai glanced at Kaine for a minute and looked how sweet he looked and how sorry she was that she hadn't been a friend for him a lately. Busy working and all especially with the recent attack. Steve took a medium Anabolic Protoplaser and adjusted the setting. "This will do the trick," he said and holding close to the injured limb, began to move it side to side in a sweeping motion. "How does that feel?" he asked after a few seconds had passed. Mai jerked her leg in a movement of slight pain for a second and the felt a tingling sensation through out her leg. "Fine, I guess ..." she replied as she moved her leg around like if she was testing it out. "Good," Steve said, "but that doesn't mean you can go racing around on it. Seriously MaiKai ... you have to rest it ... if you don't, Rangi will have our guts for garters and no mistake." He watched her face for a second or two, half expecting some form or excuse as to why she couldn't rest, but when she didn't seem to have one ready, he turned to the slumbering pitbull "OK ...," he said eyeing the mass of muscle and teeth, " let's fix up the little doggie shall we?" MaiKai opened her mouth as if to correct Steve, but she wasn't quite in the mood for that. She wasn't walking around on her knee just to get attention or sympathy, Mai just thought it really wasn't that bad. "Yes, ... my dog ... we shall," she replied as she nudged her arm towards Kaine. "If you set to work on the teeth, I'll deal with the broken bones," Steve said. "Umm ... right. I'll do that," Mai thought for a moment how she would go about fixing teeth let alone an animal's. MaiKai never had to do dental work before. Steve set to work. It was a simple enough job to mend the fractures. He glanced at MaiKai a couple of times then asked, when she seemed to be at a loss for what to do... "Why don't you just heal the gum ... make sure the roots are out ... he won't miss two teeth ... after all ... he's got lots more!" Mai nodded and took out an Anabolic Protoplaser. She mended the gums on the upper part of his mouth where two teeth were missing. She wasn't quite sure how a dog would like and think of himself missing teeth and how he would react once he awoke. "All done?" Steve asked, "Shall I revive him?" When MaiKai nodded, Steve picked up the hypospray ready with the resusitive. "Good job! You're here to reassure him," Steve said and administered the dose and stepped back. Kaine stirred a bit and started to growl. He didn't stop that until he realized who was in front of him, MaiKai, his owner. He gave a little yelp as he leapt into Mai's arms. She gave a little "umf" sound as the big dog almost toppled her over. He smiled up at her with the gumminess. She smiled back and awoke back to reality when there was a red alert and flashes going off wildly. Steve said, "I'd suggest you to get back to your quarters and rest ... but ... we might need you here," he added. Mai nodded and added to that herself with, "I'll go rest, but contact me if you need me." "Of course," Steve gave a small smile and reached out to pat Kaine, but thought better of it and lowered his hand.
