===Mess hall ===
Gary stood propped up against a support beam. Gary coveted a cup of
mildly warm coffee in his hands and sipped on it. Though the replicators
were not functioning at the moment, a resourceful yeoman had scrounged
up a few rations and brewed a pot of coffee to help keep everyone going.
It had been several hours since Gary had left the security office after
his chat with the oda co. and Oda team alpha had several hours of sleep
and now oda team bravo was taking some well deserved sac time. Gary
sipped his warm coffee and looked out the window.
===Several hours before===
Gary on the other hand had little time to sleep, he had a potential
recon mission to prepare for. He had spent the better part of 4 hours
picking up the oda eva suits that were stored in a common locker room.
Durring the battle with the romulan warbird, the lockers had become
unsecured and tossed about like unwanted trash. Since the bulk of the
team was sleeping or guarding sensitive areas, he took it upon himself
to clean up the locker rooms a bit and take stock of what was still
serviceable. Unfortunately 35 % of the EVA suits had been damaged in
some way to warrant them being discounted for use any time soon.
After the locker rooms, Gary had gone up to the bridge. He figured that
the ops officer on duty would be able to reserve two shuttles for them
for the mission they were most likely going to perform, but after
talking to the lieutenant that had checked Gary on board the chimera,
only one was serviceable. Thought the operations officer marked it down
for the oda to use, Gary was not please that they would only be able to
take one type 10 shuttle. This meant that only one team from the oda
would be able to venture out from the ship and investigate the asteroid
field. It also meant that there would be no backup, overseeing their
"six" should some thing go wrong.
After securing the information about the shuttles, Gary had headed back
to the security office. It was a short tip because by that time most of
the turbo lifts had been repaired and were working. In the security
office , he caught up with lieutenant Mcknight. The lieutenant had just
informed Gary that he was going to be conducting some training drills
with the available oda members to get to know them better and to keep
them occupied until orders came down. Gary did not think much of that
since the lieutenant was second in command and an officer. But when the
lieutenant tried to get Gary to strap on several pounds of armor and run
about the ships decks with gravity increased, Gary started to squirm to
get out of the exhausting exercise. Just then Jack walked in through the
door.
"Commander, You're looking much better." Gary commented trying to shift
away form the lieutenants topic of choice.
"You'll have to buy be dinner first before you can talk to me like that,
Williams" Jack remarked in a light hearted tone
Jack then started barking out orders to the oda, or at least the few
that were in the office. Jack had officially handed the reigns of the
oda to Lieutenant Mcknight and Gary and then officially ordered that The
oda were to cease helping with repairs.
"Williams, all relevant data on the Kzenti, on a PADD." Jack ordered
Gary as he seems to lumber ove rto a weapons locker. Gary moved around
to the working side of the desk in the main room and quickly pulled up
information the computer had stored on the Kzenti. He looked over at
Jack, watching him pull out a blad weapon and stuff it down his boot. He
then returned his gaze to the console where he tapped and transferred
the data to a pad.
By the time Gary looked back at Jack, he was straightening his jacked
and turning to Gary. Gary quickly grabbed the pad as stuck it out at
Jack, who promptly took it and left the room. Gary wondered why Jack
took a knife and not a phaser, and then conceals it in his boot. {I
wonder if he is just paranoid or he knows some thing we don't.} Gary
wondered.
After Jack left, Mckinght walked up to Gary, "Who is not on duty at the
moment?" he asked. Gary looked at the ceiling for a moment, "Well sir I
was just about to send Bravo team to get some sac time, Alpha has been
resting for several hours now." He looked back at Mcknight, "So Alpha
team is off duty." Mcknight nodded, "Good. Have them report to the mess
hall in one hour in full battle gear." Gary nodded, "Aye sir." And
watched Mcknight turn and leave the office. Gary quickly notified alpha
team of their orders and told Bravo team to sac out.. Gary then decided
he was getting a little weary and headed up to the mess hall to see if
he could scrounge up some thing.
=== back to the present ==
Gary sipped his coffee looking out the window towards where he believed
the asteroid field was. He was waiting for a science report to be filed
that would contain the detailed scans ot the asteroid field. He hoped
that it would contain at least a map of the large bodies out there so a
flight plan could be developed in advance of the oda having to venture
out there to investigate any thing the officers of the ship deamed them
worthy to investigate. He wondered what the signal could have been and
why , on a diplomatic mission they would have to investigate it. But he
did not question orders, he only followed them.
As Gary finished off the last of his coffee, the sight of a romulan
warbird came in to view. Gary looked and stared at it intently. While
trapped in the jeffries tub waiting to be rescued, Gary had caught a
glimpse of the romulan war bird that had attacked the Chimera. This one
looked different some how, though Gary could not put his finger on it.
Though Gary had only seen the attacking ship for a brief moment, some
thing on this one just did not seem to be the same. He watched as the
war bird drifted in and out of sight, keeping a good safe distance form
the chimera. Gary turned just as the war bird disappeared and headed
back to get more coffee when it dawned on him what seemed different.
Gary quickly looked back out the window but could not see the ship. {I
thought the starboard nacelle was damaged, but I could have sworn that
that ships starboard nacelle..." Gary let his thoughts trail off. Though
he was not tactical officer, he was pretty sure that he knew what he saw
on the attacking ship, but he had not paid close enough attention to the
passing ship. Filing away the thought as his tired imagination playing
tricks on him, he decided that it was high time for him to get some
rest.
Gary walked over to the counter where the yeoman had placed the now even
cooler coffee pot and set his cup down. He then tapped on his comm
badge.
" Petty officer Williams to lieutenant Mcknight." He called out.
"Mcknight here." Came a breathy reply. "Sir, I would like to go over
some details with you once you have completed your training and had some
rest. Could we meet in the security office in say..5 hours?" Gary
requested. Soon the channel opened up and a breathy reply came. "Very
well Petty officer, 5 hours. Mcknight out."
Gary, happy with the arrangement headed out of the mess hall. Now all he
had to do was find a place to lie down and catch some shuteye, He only
hoped that engineering had reopened the part of deck 5 where his bunk
was.
