Athena waited several minutes after the guard had left before she tried the
door. {Locked. Damn! Think, think, think.} She slowly looked around the
room. It was very sterile looking. White walls, floor and ceiling. There was a
small table and a chair in one corner; both white. And there was a twin size
bed in another corner with white sheets and blanket. {Wonder who the
decorator was?}
Athena looked down at her own clothing, her dress uniform, and was struck by
how well she could blend in with her surroundings if it weren't for her hair,
her pips and a bit of colored piping. {Why me? Am I the weakest link?} She
lifted her hand to her throat and winced softly. She gave a small sigh as she
sat in the middle of the room. She started in one corner of the room and
began to make a detailed scan of her surroundings. Other than a small black dot
in one corner near the ceiling and some kind of keypad by the door the room
had nothing other than the furniture she noticed earlier.
She walked over to the keypad and began to look it over. The markings on the
pad were different and she couldn't even begin to guess at their meanings.
She continued to stare at the pad as her throat became parched. The hissing of
the door startled her and she took a few steps backward into the room. A
young woman with a few implants walked in and turned to press a couple of the
buttons on the pad. Athena watched as the woman's hand moved swiftly and blocked
her view of the pad. The other woman set a pitcher on the table and a glass.
Her hand sped over the keys again and then she walked out the door.
Athena walked over to the pitcher and looked inside. It appeared to be water
and the liquid within the pitcher was odorless as well. Athena licked her
lips and went back over to the pad pushing buttons. She was trying to imitate
the same sounds in the hopes that she would push the right combination. She
kept punch numbers until her arm grew numb and she could no longer lift it. She
turned around and leaned her head against the wall only to be poked by one of
her hair decorations. The door hissed and a guard reached out and moved
Athena aside as he rapidly entered a code on the pad.
Athena moistened her dry lips and asked in a bit of a raspy voice, "Why am I
being kept here?" The guard looked at her but didn't answer. She prodded
further, "Did I do something wrong?" An unchanging expression and silence met
her questions. Normally Athena tried to ignore the telepathy of others; the
silent messages they sent without realizing it. She concentrated on the guard in
front of her. She strolled over to the table and pour the "water" into it
and held it out to him as a distraction. The guard looked at the glass but
remain in his position like a sentry. {Odd. There's an individual presence but
the focus is so singular. Like there is only one thought in his head.}
Athena shivered at the eerie discovery. The water in the glass she held out
barely jiggled as the door slid open and another person entered. There was
something different about the new comer. {The guards thoughts were singular and
clear but the new comers seemed to be curious.} Athena looked at the man who
just entered. He carried no weapon, his cybernetics were different from that
of the guard and he seemed more regal. She was beginning to feel as though
she were a mere speck of dust being examined under a microscope. "Will you
please take me back to my delegation," she asked calmly.
The regal looking Kzenti shook his head and took a step closer to her.
Athena felt nervous but didn't back away. As the man reached out toward her Athena
said, "We were promised that nothing would happen to us and I'd like to
return to my ship," she added a firm, "please," to keep a diplomatic air about her
request. She pushed the man's hand away and the guard reacted amazingly
quickly. The glass of water shattered in her hand and Athena froze. The two men
left in a whirl; the beeps of the tapped pad where quick and the magnetic click
after the door hissed closed had a sound of finality to it.
Athena looked at the puddle on the floor and took a couple of backward steps.
She turned her hand over and examined her palm. She was fine except for a
couple of small cuts. Another couple of backward step and the back of her legs
came into contact with the bed. She sank down onto it as the adrenaline
coursing through her body made her begin to tremble.
