*** Sickbay * USS Chimera ***
Rangi gasped, her eyes wide in shock at the sight before her. Someone grabbed her arm, pulling her roughly to one side, a movement that she resisted.
"Get back" Steve said, desperately dragging her away from the door just as phaser fire burst onto the wall little more than an arms length away.
She half twisted around, Steve tugged at her arm and, unbalanced, she stumbled, reached out wildly and dropped to her hands and knees. He grabbed her wrist as she made to crawl forward.
"He's hit!..." she cried, glancing for a half second at Steve and back into the sickbay where Shanes motionless body lay half hidden behind the base of the main surgical bed.
"Not by a phaser" Steve said and met her frightened eyes when she turned back to him. "He's alright....." he told her with a shake of his head "It wasnt a phaser."
Whether she believed him or not he couldnt tell for a further sound of fire caught their attention..... then all was still.
Rangi scrambled to her feet, saw a Romulan soldier and another figure in a heap on the floor, glanced back as two security men entered the bay behind her, phasers at the ready and crossed to where Shane lay. His arms were wrapped across his stomach, his body curled into feotal position.
She knelt beside him and reached to his neck, feeling for a pulse.
Momentarily she closed her eyes in relief and taking a deep calming breath looked to her right where Steve was attending to Shanes brother Martin. She saw him beckon Maikai who hurried across to them.
A figure stopped beside her and Rangi looked up to see Gary Williams.
"Are you alright petty officer?" she asked.
Gary nodded, "A little dusty, but nothing to worry about." He smiled then pointed to the door; "Well I think you can handle things from here doctor. If you will excuse me I have to go." Rangi nodded and returned her attention to Shane.
**Few minutes later**
Shane groaned, slowly straightening his position and blinking his eyes.
"It's alright...lay still" Rangi said quietly and when he seemed aware of her asked:"How do you feel?"
She saw him focus on her.
"Like a box training sack" he replied slowly. "What happened? Where is the Romulan?"
He made a feeble attempt to get up, grimaced in discomfort and sucked in a breath between his teeth.
"Dont Shane, please" Rangi said softly and placed a hand on his stomach. "You have been knocked out by a Romulan soldier who was beamed over instead of the counselor" she explained, ".....at least thats what I've been told" She looked at him and continued: "He was about to flee from here when someone from the security shot him."
"Is he dead?" Shane asked.
Rangi shook her head: "No, stunned. Although it took at least three shots to stop him. The marines escorted him to the Brig for the time being".
"Good" Shane said and made another effort to move.
This time Rangi helped him and with some groans and gasps he managed to get to his feet.
"Martin?" he asked, his expression revealing his pain. Rangi pointed to a biobed where Steve and Maikai were tending the unfortunate consul.
"He'll be fine" she said.
Shane gave a slow nod, looking over at his brother for moment then switched his attention to Rangi. He was about to speak when a call interrupted him:
+TAPS+ Captain Acheson to Commander Summers. The romulan warbird is hailing us.
Shane tapped his commbadge, giving her a faint smile as he did so.
+TAPS+ Guzman to Acheson. I'll take care of it. Computer, site to site transport of my person directly to the Bridge. Authorisation Guzman alpha 11.
Rangi stepped back two paces and watched the blue haze envelope him.
She breathed a long sigh, glad that the emergency was dealt with, glad that noone was badly hurt and glad that Shane was back on board.
She looked around the sickbay.
Maikai was tending to Martin who seemed to be awake and responsive.Steve was talking to Mercedes.Everything seemed to be getting back to normal.
Rangi frowned at a large scorch mark on the wall about chest height. {Near miss?} she wondered and turned to her office.
It seemed an age since she'd been there and knowing that Shane was back on the bridge, she decided she could allow herself a few minutes to catch up on her own department.
Taking the topmost padd from a stack on her desk and activating it, she moved to take a seat in her chair.
{He came then... after all} she thought, partly surprised and began to read Mercedes report on Captain Walsh and his scan.
