Athena heard a soft hissed and jumped off the bed. She wasn't sure when but
she had dozed for a few minutes. It probably happened when she was going over
delegation rules. Which happened after she mentally tried to argue both
sides of the age old question "If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around
to hear it does it make a sound". She wasn't sure if she won or lost just that
arguing both sides at the same time was more than a bit disconcerting and was
making her head ache all the more.
Athena stood and watched as two people came in and took away the food and
drink she had left sitting from earlier. But out with the old; seemed to bring
in the new. New dishes that seemed more like breakfast foods replaced the hors
d'oeuvres' or snack foods that had been there. Another chair was added as
well as a pot of coffee and a pitcher of juice as well as two place settings.
With the disappearance of the "servants", came a new figure. Well, not all
that new Athena recognized him from one of the ceremonies that took place after
their arrival on the planet.
Athena closed her right eye as she tried to think of the man's name. She
squinted out her left eye but all she saw was black. {Wonder if that's the skin
color or if my eye is swollen shut.} Athena opened her good eye and remain
quite and standing. {Reegull. That's his name.} He gestured toward the chairs
and said, "Shall we?"
Athena was hesitant but sat down in one of the chairs. Reegull didn't fill
his plate or pour himself a drink. She sat with her hands in her lap waiting
to see what would happen next. His voice came out in forced cheerfulness when
he asked, "Will you join me?"
Athena nodded and held up the coffee pot. "Would you like some," She asked
and at his nod she filled a cup and handed it to him. He set the cup beside
his plate but didn't touch it. The next few minutes was spent in silence as
they both put food on their plates and Athena poured the juice. It was almost
amusing how they both went through the motions of preparing to eat but neither
ate a bite or even took a drink.
"Why don't you eat or drink," Reegull asked after a couple more minutes of
strained silence.
"I guess I am really not all that hungry or thirsty," Athena replied. She
let her cool stare run over him as she tried to sense more than just idle
curiosity from him. She gently rubbed her left temple to ease the aching that had
settled there.
"I could get someone to look at that," Reegull offered.
"No, thank you I'm fine," Athena answered. She leaned her head to one side
and looked at him inquisitively. "What do you really want to know," she asked.
Reegull smirked a bit and shook his head. "Why did you wonder away from you
group," he asked.
Athena sighed as she sensed that question was a stall tactic. Politely she
replied, "I didn't and you know it." One thing was certain he would have seen
any reports made by security before he came to see her. "Why are you holding
me here, "she asked calmly.
He ignored her question and asked another of his own, "Why would your ship
beam a Romulan on board?"
"They wouldn't," she answered simply.
"But the did," Reegull countered.
"I'm sure they didn't," Athena responded with certainty. She licked her dry
lips and queried, "What do you hope to gain through meeting with both the
federation and the Romulans?"
Athena listened to the diplomatic answer he gave but didn't believe it.
Reegull was a bit surprised by the young woman's assurance in her answers and her
inquisitive manner didn't help either. He wore a chip at the base of the back
of his neck to increase his brain activity and it helped him to sense what
others were thinking most of the time which made him a good negotiator not that
he used that skill much but it was need upon occasion. He didn't like how the
Federation woman didn't seem to believe him or how she didn't appear to trust
them. She hadn't eaten any of the food they offered her or drink. He could
tell that she was thirsty by the dryness of her lips. Their scientist seemed
to think their was something special about this woman and If the Federation
ship and the Romulan ship started fighting so much the better for them.
Reegull had ignored her question again and seemed to making some decisions as
they sat there in silence yet again. "I think we should have someone look at
your injury," he finally stated.
"Well, I'd prefer my own ships doctor look at it," Athena responded with a
small smile.
"I don't think we should......," Reegull began but never finished. His plate
of food was suddenly in his lap.
With extreme kindness and a bit of cheerfulness Athena said, "Oh my, you
should go and get that cleaned up right away. It can't be very comfortable."
Reegull sat there stunned for a minute normally if he bumped a cup or his
plate he could catch it before so much as a crumb or a drop spilled. Athena
sensed his confusion but after a moment or two he stood and nodded before he left.
