Mathew noticed the strange look in the XO's eye, as he asked if someone knew a means of getting the computer information. It meant him, of course. The ODA would probably smash the eerie Romulan computers at the first failed command. COs always seemed to smile when they wanted something difficult out of their Engineers.
He looked at the Romulan display and tapped at it haphazardly, trying to get his bearings.
"Ok, I think this is the main command processor."
Suddenly, loud alarms started blaring in the cargo bay. "Shit!" Kirkland called out, as he tapped at the keys quickly, trying to respond to it. He silenced the alarm, just as two Romulan guards entered the cargo bay. They approached Kirkland, glaring at him with harsh, malicious eyes.
"What the hell is going on, centurion?"
Kirkland nodded, with an internal smile at the little promotion he gave himself when creating his costume.
"I'm sorry. The Daise'Paectum'Saehne (CEO) told me to remodulate the power adapter here and I seem to have triggered the alarm."
The two guards thought for a moment and then nodded, seemingly accepting the request. One of the guards lingered ... "Something about you seems ... off-putting. It's almost as if ..."
He hoped that the ODA had a phaser ready, incase his true identity was revealed.
"Nah, I must be mistaken. You are rather ugly, though. Are you sure your mother wasn't a Klingon?"
"About as sure that your own mother was also your Vada (Aunt)." He replied. Nobody was going to insult his mother, no matter how disguised he was supposed to be.
The Romulan guard grew angry for a moment before the other walked back, laughing. "He got you there. Let's hurry up and get back on patrol."
Kirkland turned back to the computer as they left and pulled out his silent Federation tricorder.
"Accessing ..."
He looked at the results. "The Romulans don't seem to have cloaking device control. An external force seems to have hampered their cloak. But I have an idea."
He waited for Guzman to catch up to him.
"If we can access the Romulan transporters and modulate them to precisely the right frequency, we might be able to beam through the Chimera's shields. The cloak itself does not inhibit transport."
