After Security had disarmed Kirkland and laid him down, the Medical
staff got to work. He watched as the young woman whom he had so
recently threatened to kill was now tending his wounded arm, which
had grown completely limp due to the nerve damage from the Romulan
disruptor blast.
"You have some nerve damage from the disruptor shot," Mercedes explained to
Kirkland as she ran the dermal regenerator across his skin. "That's why you
can't feel anything in your arm. I'm going to place a motor assist band on
your arm after I'm done with the regeneration. How did you get it if you
don't mind me asking?"
"Being stupid, Doctor. I went too far forward in a patrol on the ship."
Once the skin on Kirkland's arm was healed, blue splotches began to appear
under the newly regenerated skin. "Don't worry about that. It's just the
internal bruising coming through. It should dissipate within a few days."
He nodded and looked at his arm and the blue spots. He almost hoped that
there would be a scar, to remember what'd happened.
Mercedes took a motor assist band from the medical tray nearby, and wrapped
around Kirkland's arm. With a tricorder, she programmed the device to assist
in delivering neural impulses to the tissue in his arm while his nerve
pathways regenerated.
He groaned as he tried to move his arm. "It's so hard!"
"All right, Lieutenant, that should do it," she said when she finished the
programming. "You'll feel some tingling sensations in your arm throughout
the day, but you'll get used to it; it just means the assist band is doing
its job. Just a few things to remember... don't get it wet. A sonic shower
is fine, but immersing it in water will damage your skin. Also, if the band
encounters an electromagnetic pulse, it'll stop functioning. Lastly, and
probably most importantly... you cannot go through a transporter while the
band is active. It will cause disruption within the annular confinement beam
which, as you know, is not a good thing."
Mercedes smiled at the Engineer who seemed slightly perplexed. "Other than
that, you're free to go!"
He nodded and walked away looking at the band around his arm.
"This will be ... interesting" he thought.
