Lieutenant
Mike Blackburn
Acting Chief of Engineering
USS Chimera NCC 96899
-
Ensign
Mercedes Carpenter
Assistant Medical Officer
USS Chimera NCC 96899
= Sickbay
Mercedes was lazily checking through the cabinets to make sure everything
was in stock. Inventory had to be done before the Chimera left the station,
to make sure they had all their supplies, but she doubted if Kinsi could
really offer them anything if they ran out of medicines.
She looked up when heard the doors slid open and walk towards the front of
the sickbay. "May I help you?"
Private 1st Class Barns helped Mike onto the biobed. "Injury to head and
left leg, he fell a long way." he said, watching the doctor hurry to help
him with Mike who was conscious, but only slightly
Mercedes grabbed a tricorder from a nearby stand and started scanning Mike.
"Where did he fall?" she asked, glancing at the results on the tricorder. He
had a fractured tibia and some bruising around his knee ligaments
Barnes began to explain but was cut off by Mike, "I didn't fall" he mumbled
in his drowziness, "I jumped." he managed to add before falling unconscious
once more. Barns began to talk again, "he jumped from the upper level of
main engineering to the lower level, it saved us the wargames but clearly he
hurt himself a lot."
"What? Why did he jump?" Mercedes pulled a hypospray forward and injected
Mike with a painkiller before moving away to find the equipment she'd need
to mend the fracture.
The private explained that Mike had stopped a crewmember from the Simpson
from planting a fake mine on the warp core, saving the game. "A strange
thing to do, for a game" he added.
"Yes, I agree," Mercedes said rather skeptically. She grabbed two
osteotractors and a protoplaser from the equipment table and headed back to
the bed. "Private, please take off his pants."
Mike felt dizzy, he could vaguely feel the pain in his leg, but it was
distant, as though he wasn't really there. He moaned something, but it was
unclear what he was saying, even to himself. He felt a sharp pain as his leg
moved slightly, and while it hurt, it certainly helped him to focus
"All right, Mike, I'm going to place the osteotractors parallel to your bone
in order to set it straight. The painkillers I gave you will numb the pain,
but it will still hurt a little. Try not to move," she explained as she
placed the two long devices on either side of his lower leg.
Mike heard Mercedes and felt the scene was familiar, it was only a couple of
weeks since she treated him for his reaction to a custard pie. He drifted
around, not quite knowing what was going on, but hearing things all the
same.
They waited a few moments while the osteotractors did their job, and then
she stabilised them to keep the bone in place while she activated the
protoplaser and placed it over the fractured on his skin. "This might tingle
a bit," she said. "I'm mending the bone now."
Mike giggled, the painkiller had sent him woozy and the medical device was
ticklish. He jerked a little and the pain suddenly hit him, brining him
straight into consciousness. "OW!" he shouted!
Mercedes tried not to grin to obviously and focused on keeping the device
stable. "Well, that'll teach you to jump off railings," she said, suddenly
thinking she sounded a lot like a mother hen.
"Is everything all right here?" Ensign Fisher asked behind them, peeking out
of the CMO's office.
"Yes, just a broken leg. I've got it covered," Mercedes replied.
Mike smiled a touch. "Please tell me we haven't lost the wargames. Please
tell me it was worth breaking my leg." he said, desperate to know they were
still in it
"Um..." Mercedes glanced around. "I have no idea, I've been in Sickbay all
the time. You'll have to ask Acheson once we're done."
Mike frowned, the Privates who had brought him had long since left, and
considering he was meant to be not-moving, he decided it was probably stupid
to tap his commbadge. He looked down at his leg. It didn't look too bad
The protoplaser beeped twice and Mercedes shut it off. Taking the tricorder,
she scanned his leg again. "All done. I'm going to put some motor assist
bands around your leg, give you a crutch and then you can leave."
Mike smiled. He had never broken a bone before, but now he could say he had.
He pulled himself back a little bit and sat up so that he could survey the
damage on his leg. There was a nasty line down it, but that would be gone in
a few days. "Thank you very much, once again, you're a star" he said.
"It's a pleasure," Mercedes smiled, fastening the bands around his leg. She
walked over to the storage cabinet, and took out a crutch. "Don't forget
your pants," she said, handing him the crutch.
Mike gave her a look at her last statement as he got dressed and took the
crutch. He Smiled to her and then turned around to leave.
