Sean stood for a while on the same spot, after the General left.
Around him, a feverish activity arouse, as noone wanted to be the
scapegoat for his anger, and Sean appreciated that in his own twisted
way.
'I'm gonna get them all' was all he could think of for a while, until
he finally managed to calm down a bit. With strong paces he entered
his office and threw the uniform jacket on the desk.
With a cup of coffee from the replicator in one hand, and a PADD in
his other, he finally sat down behind his desk and put up his feet.
'One hour of peace and quiet, that's all I'm asking for now' he
thought, while taking deep breath and closing his eyes for a moment.
The chime to his office rang at that exact moment.
"What... now..." he hissed enraged and looked up. In front of his
office, a mustard collared officer was waiting.
Nick raised his eyebrow as he entered the room, "My name is Lieutenant
Commander Nick Quayle, I am returning to the Chimera as Assistant
Engineering Officer," he said quickly before Sean had time to respond,
"I trust I am not disturbing you,"
"We'll see that" Sean cut in dryly and took the PADD from Quayles
hand. He left the higher ranking officer stand in the room while he
skimmed through the transfer orders and his records.
"CEO of the Chimera?" he finally spoke up with a frown. "As if I
hadn't enough problems" he added in a muttered tone and looked Quayle
straight in the eyes.
"Ok, here's the deal, Assistant Engineer Quayle." he said finally.
"First of all, welcome back to the Chimera. I don't need to point out
your duties since you seem to be more then familiar to the ship. I am
going to lay down a few rules for you, and I expect them to be
followed. If you do, we'll get along just fine, if not, you'll know a
side of me that you don't want to know." he stood up and started to
pace along the room.
"I want to know right away one thing. Is it a problem for you to
follow orders from a lower ranking officer?"
Nick tipped his head to the side slightly as he observed Sean's
pacing, "It will not be a problem," he smiled, "I was a member of the
Borg Collective for 3 years following orders is not a probelm,
regardless of who they are from."
"I certainly hope so" Sean cut in dryly. "Don't expect me to Sir you,
but in regards to your rank, I wont ask that from you either. Lt., Chief
or Mr. McTaggert will suffice." he stood right in front of Quayle and
stared ill humored to the LtCmdr.
"I watch over my engineers, I make sure they can do their job, and I
expect them to watch out for each other the same way and get their job
done. Right, in time, and taking the responsibility of it serious. You
will find I can be demanding, but also flexible if everything's fine.
If you have any problems, be it with the crew or with the ship, I
expect you to touch base with me and work things out. I do not
tolerate stupidity and less the all personal issues affecting the
performance of the engineering crew. I also do not tolerate my orders
not being followed." he paused and watched Quayle closely.
"Let me tell you one more thing. I do accept critisism as long as it
is constructive, and I like to have opinions and suggestions from this
crew. Our main concern is the welfare of the ship and its systems and
that's what it's all about in the end."
Sean slowly walked back to his desk and took several PADDs in his hand.
"Now here's the deal." he continued and handed Quayle the PADDs.
"Right now, we are modifying the ships systems to adjust our shields
and reflector systems to a new, faulty, experimental technology, meant
to shield us against temporal anomalies. Ens. Rodgers is already
working along with MCapt. Garsha, head of the Base Engineering Team,
to install and reprogramm the systems. I would appreciate you tagging
along and help Rodgers keep a good eye on these Base Slackers. Your
knowledge on the ships systems will be helpful.
Let me tell you though, that I want Rodgers in charge of the teams, at
least until I know your capabilities better. Do I make myself clear?"
"Perfectly. But with all due respect, Chief" Nick said
"Please do not address me as though I just rolled out of the academy
or as if this is a disciplinary meeting. You are right, I do outrank
you; however, if I can run a Security Department on Starbase Aurora
with only the rank of Ensign, I dont feel that following your orders
will be anymore of a challenge and neither will a repair crew from the
Starbase." Nick said simply, "Do I make myself clear?"
Sean turned slowly and watched Quayle from head to toe.
"Mr. Quayle" he said in an icy tone. "I'll let it slide for being the
first time.
I will explain myself a bit clearer. For the moment, you are a new
officer to this ship and to myself. I don't know you and I don't know
what you can do. Since I am the Chief Officer of this Department, you
will leave it to me to assess if you are or not capable of handling
the tasks I give you. Therefore, you will go now and help Rodgers as
good as you can, and do it quietly. Should you have any problems with
the way I handle things, you can always talk to the General and start
looking for a new post. This can be a good place to work or hell, the
choice is yours. You can go now."
"Oh, and by the way" Sean added before Nick left the room. "Make sure
to tell Rodgers and the rest of the team, that we have orders of
being =B4nice=B4 to the Base Engineers, since we don't want them whining
and shitting their pants while on the ship. Just be professional and
get the job done. The sooner we're off the base, the better.
Dismissed."
Sean watched Quayle leave the Engineering Area. Was the LtCmdr. a
message from the General that he was no longer appreciated as Head
Engineer? If so, that was a hell of a quick answer to their
discussion, and Sean would tell the General to stick the job up where
the sun doesn't shine. Sean stopped this line of thinking. The
transfer orders where issued weeks before today, so it couldn't be.
But what if...?
<<had a lot of fun doing this JL. Thanks McT - Nick>>
