It had been several days since his 'talk' with Jack. He knew the cursory
punishment he had handed out was not going to impact Jack much, but it
was a start. Some how, some way Keylor had to get through to Know Jack,
to get through to him and form at least a working understanding. Keylor
wanted to give Jack a few days to stew over the almost seeming less
punishment, but after having to restore limited command code access to
Jack so he could still function as the Oda Co; limited to the oda office
and only the necessary systems he needed, he figured Jack was probably
sitting in his office laughing at Keylor apparently futile gesture. But
that was then, now it was time for Keylor to take it to the next level.
Keylor once had a drill sergeant that liked to make you march everywhere
for punishment. The drill sergeant used to always say "It is good for
the constitution and you have plenty of time to think, with a 60 pound
pack strapped to your back". This would be Keylor's next move. He tapped
on the consol embedded in to his desk and started scrolling through the
holodeck programs. It took him 15 minutes before he finally found one to
his liking.
This particular program was a 20 th century tour of a north American
military base, Fort McClellan. It was in the part of the Americas called
Alabama and at the foot hills of the mountain range called the
Appalachia' s. There on the base were two features of note, Little Bangs
and big bangs. They were hills, well one of them was a hill, the other a
mountain. Both had paved roads going up them. Little bangs was a 1000
meter climb at a 20 degree slope from horizontal. Keylor figured this
would barely make jack break a sweat. But Big bangs was another story.
Big bangs was a 3 kilometer rise form horizontal at a 35 degree slope,
the road winding back and forth, never decreasing below a 25 degree
slope at any one time. The road itself was 5 kilometers long. This is
what Keylor has decided to bother Jack with. Keylor pulled up the
details of Big bangs and pulled the specifications over to a holo
program generator.
Keylor then sent a message to Jack. Sure he could have called over the
comms, but he was not out to make this public, to try to humiliate Jack
in front of others. No now it was just between Jack and him. The message
read as follows.
"Major. You are ordered to meet me at Holodeck 2 at exactly 19:30 hours.
Wear a PT uniform." <<ooc: PT is physical training for those who don't
know>>
Keylor kept the message short and to the point, after his last encounter
with Jack, he figured there was no point in elaborating.
-- 19:15 hours--
Keylor stood in the holodeck looking at the program the computer had
generated. He looked up at the towering mountain and the road that
occasionally peeked out form behind the towering fir trees. The air was
thick with humidity and the air hot and stale. Keylor smiled, {Good the
computer has created the perfect environment, hot, humid, blue skies and
sunny, without a could in the sky. This should be absolutely miserable.}
he thought. {But it is not complete.}
Keylor then called out to the computer. "Computer, create a standard
issue field pack, with 60 pounds of exercise weights of inside of it."
The computer beeped and a field pack appeared in front of Keylor. {Now
for me..What do I want to have?} he thought. "Computer, create one.."
He thought for a moment and recalled seeing a strange vehicle in the
archive filed. {What was that called?} he wondered. Then it occurred to
him. "Computer, create a 20th century Personal All Terrain Vehicle ,
and ATV" he smiled. Next to him appeared a rather fun looking, four
wheeled contraption. {Well this looks fun, and with me circling around
Jack all the way up, it might even piss him off.} Keylor wlaked over to
the ATV and sat down on it. Since he had a few minutes he figured he
would get familiarized with it before Jack showed up.
-- A few minutes later --
Jack walked in the door to find Keylor driving the ATV slowly in a
figure eight around the field pack. Once Keylro noticed Jack standing
there he stopped the ATV and looked at his Chrono. {Good one minute
early. At least he still has enough sence to report on time. I was
afraid I was going to have to have the computer locate him and site to
site transport him here.} he thought. Keylor pointed the field pack on
the floor.
"Major, Your first task... Carry that to the top of the mountain." He
pointed to the pack and then to the top of the mountain. Keylor watched
as Jack looked down at the pack, then to the top of the mountain, then
back to Keylor. Jack took a second to respond, "Aye sir." He said in a
business like tone. Keylor simply sat on the ATV and waited for Jack to
pick up the pack. After a moment of silence ( less than 10 seconds) Jack
steppe dup to the pack and picked it up. Though Jack never groaned or
winced, Keylor thought he could see Jack hesitate slightly as he picked
up the pack, apparently taken a bit off gourd at the weight. After
putting the pack on his back, Jack started up the road, and the steep
climb to the top.
Keylor gave Jack a few minutes head start before following along behind
him, ready to circle jack all the way to the top.
--Some time later -
Keylor sat on a lounge chair at the top of the mountain waiting for Jack
to finish the last few meters to the little plateau at the top. The ATV
Keylor had been driving had long since disappeared and in its place were
one lounge chair, a beach umbrella ( properly positioned to shade
Keylor) and two ice cold canteens of water, and one rather suspicious
looking shovel .
Keylor watched as Jack Walked proudly up to Keylor. Within a few steps,
Jack stopped. Took the pack off and in an almost defiantly manner,
Placed the pack on the ground at his feet. From his shade, Keylor
smiled. "Well done Major." He then reached over and tossed a canteen to
Jack.
Not even waiting for Jack to respond in any way, Keylor pointed to the
surrounding area. "This is a bivouac site. But there is a problem; I
don't see a field latrine anywhere. I would not bivouac a troop of
adolescent boys here with out a proper field latrine." Keylor looked
back at Jack who was finishing a drink of the water. "Since you seem so
fond of finding ways to place waste, I thought you would be the perfect
person for this job." He pointed to the shovel. " Dig me a latrine pit,
5 feet deep. By 5 feet wide and as wide as your shoulders." Keylor
instructed.
Jack closed the top of the canteen and looked over to the shovel.
Taking a good look at the shovel he then looked back at Keylor. "Aye
sir." Came his reply, not as strong or as convicted as earlier, but not
showing any signs of breaking. Jack then slowly walked over to the
shovel and pulled it out of the dry clay. He then set the canteen down,
turned his back to Keylor and then plunged the shovel in to the earth.
Without saying a word to Jack, Keylor watched from his chair in the
shade. After the 4th shovel of earth was moved, Keylor called out.
"Computer. Replicate a tall glass, with two cubes of ice and 8 ounces of
whiskey." Keylor then held out his hand the computer materialized the
request in his hand. Though he was not watching Jack, Keylor could have
sworn the rhythmic sound of Jack shoveling had skipped a beat. Taking a
finger, Keylor stirred the whiskey and ice, making sure to clink the ice
cubes as loud as he could.
