======= Astrometrics, several hours before leaving Bragg station ======= Oriana went directly to the astrometrics, while Terek went to his quarters. She entered the room, in which were 6 others people, Petrel, Kardas, of course. Themian was on duty again. He lost a bit from his left antenna after the accident in astrometrics, anything unthought for Andorian. And others. She went to the console, which she left, when she went looking for cadet Terek. The diagnostic, which she turned on, was almost at the end. She went to the replicator then. "Computer, a glass mint tee, hot." [Unable to comply.] Oriana hesistated for one second: Explain. [The replicators are offline, because of the shield modifications at Lt. Commander Samantha Palmers bidding.] Oriana rose her eyebrow. Then she turned to the console. The diagnostic was completed. She looked the findings. Of course, the shields took too much energy. Computer, explain the interferences with the sensors. [The sensors are at low efficiency because of the shields modifications at ] Lt. Commander Samantha palmers bidding, ended Oriana with computer. {Who is this woman?} thought Oriana. {Did she know, the malfunction of the sensors was the cause of one death almost?} Right in the moment, when Oriana was questioning computer about senzore entered the astrometrics Terek. Dressed again in his blue collared uniform. He looked around. There were except Oriana another six persons which he hadn't known yet. They seemed to busy to say hello, but when each other turned head towards the newcomer, Terek nodded them for greeting. Then he approached Oriana which was right now looking through him in deep thoughts... Good morning again madam. Reporting for a duty.... Said Terek with a hesitant smile. Oriana looked at Cadet. You are here already, she looked then at the others. Allright, people, come to me. A short staff meeting. I want to check the subroutines of integration this new shield modifications. I mean, the people, who worked at that, on the laboratory made a mistake in the program. Without the sensors we are blind. Then she gave the work to everyone. After a shor briefing, Terek was given a job to check programming of the main recognition circuitry. {Well this is going to be a long shift.} He thought when he was taking his place at one of the main consoles. {OK, then, how it was on the academy? Oh, yes, run a basic diagnostics.} So he run a third class diagnostics on the main programming. After a short while, computer ended and showed the results. What he saw didn't please him. Because analysis hadn't showed any irregularities and reported senzore to work properly. But when he tried that it was obvious that they wasn't working properly at all. So he displayed subroutine schematics and he couldn't believe his eyes. {Oh Prophets, this is incredible.} Most of the subroutines looked written right, but the programming was all confused. It wasn't mystery that efficency of the sensors was low. Even the processing speed was almost .07 micro second worse than it should normaly be. {Well this will require some 'gentle' handling} So Terek stretched his fingers so they cracked and then he chased them upon the console in order to repair programming of the recognize subroutines. He didn't realize how time was speeding up. He sat at the console for about three hours now. It was a tiring job, but he had already reprogrammed radiation proximity and colision recognition and so far all tests showed a perfect results. Now just a few more parts his job will be finnished. After that it will require much more experienced person which will be able to tune sensors to flawless band with no inclination. He intendet to ask if he can assist with this, because on the academy this was one of the most difficult things for him. {Tuning the sensors...} Even now he was able to recall voice of Lt. Barrach who was desperate about him {Cadet! If you ever will be able to do this, then I will resign to my function. There will be no need for me at the Academy because when You are able to tune out the variations then everyone else would do it with their eyes shut and ears deafed.} In next year he learned it of course, but he was still not as good as he would like. He still couldnt hear variation under .005 microns, but he hoped that it will get better. So with this thought he continued with the work. But suddenly he was forced to stop. After he reprogrammed the tactical sensors, test showed him, that it still isn't OK. { Sakra } he cursed as his father used to when he realized his problem { What is it now? OK, calm down. Waht can it be? Programming is surely OK now. Perhaps some hardware fault rught it may be....} he runned a diagnostics of the optical data network dedicated to the tactical sensors and after it was finnishe dhe saw what was wrong. Section 21b in the ODN circuitry was not working as it should. {Well this will require an engineer to handle} He thought. So he turned his head to Oriana. "Madam. I've managed to repair programming all of the main recognition algorythms, but there is a technical problem which will require an engineer to solve. It seems that tactical sensors ODN was damaged when new shields were installed." Her work advanced not with acceptable speed. {Who with common sence could to connect the localization subroutines to the shields this way.} She corrected 47 files already, when cadet turned to her with problem. She looked over what he found, nodded and tapped her combadge. + TAPS + Astrometrics to engineering. + TAPS + Engineering here, sir. + TAPS + There is a technical problem in the tactical ODN circuitry section 21b. Can you send someone there? + TAPS + We have much work here, could to last some time. + TAPS + Perhaps, we will need the tactical sensors tomorrow yet. + TAPS + Allright, sir, I understand. I will send there someone. + TAPS + Thank you. Astrometrics out. After Oriana made request for the repair team, Terek returned to his work on the last sensor subsystem. After another hour or so, the ensign dispatced to repair ODN reported he'd finnished so Terek went to the next console to try out the tactical sensors. They worked for several hours now. Oriana made a short break to meditation, because she got the better ideas in this habit. She sat on the sofa, which was in astrometrics. After a while someone sat near by her. She opened her eyes. It was Cadet Terek. She saw him directly. "May I ask something personal?" When he nodded, she continued: "How shall I call you? I know, you on Bajor prefer the first name. But some Bajorans in Starfleet adapt themselves to use their last name." When Oriana spoke to him, he was little surprised. For a last few minutes she was meditating... probably to concentrate her thoughts. {I would use something similar... or a stron hot tea} He thought when she spoken. "Oh ... well Bajoran's names are little complicated thing. If you are interested I can explain. He paused for Oriana's response. Well, it looked like she will get the complete informations now. Please, continue, she said. "OK then our names consist from two parts as you probably know. But on the contrary to human's first name followed by the last name, we have it swapped. So the first part we say is actually our family ame. And our first name is something really personal. Usually it is used only by closest circle of family and by some friends." He paused again to catch the breath and then he continued. "So my whole name is Terek Weranis, but most people call me Terek. I'm used to it." He gave her a mousy smile and waited for her reaction. Oriana nodded: I see. It is similar to Vulcan family names, which is never spoken efore foreigners. Some people think, we have the first name only. So, I will call you Cadet Terek, as you wish. Terek nodded as to acknowledge this information and in the moment he wanted to ask Oriana about how the Vulcan looks like because he only herd about it from people who heard it from anyone else, Oriana was just suggesting that they should go back to work and his first name resonated in the room. So, I think, we could to continue in our work Oriana started, but then a voice came to them. Petrels voice. Excuse me, sir, I need some help, could Mr. Weranis Oriana waved her hand and Terek went to Petrel. Firstly when he heard name Weranis form warrant officer's mouth he almost ignored it because he hasn't heard it for quite long time from anyone else than his family. Lastly it was his ex-girlfriend in the first grade at the academy, but since they split up in quite nasty circumstances he was more carefull before allowing someone to call him that way. So he was caught unprepared to this and hearing his name from for him absolutely unknown person it was quite disturbing. But he controled himself and went away from Oriana to Petrel. Well, cadet Weranis, I need not help exactly, he smiled. Our chief, he nodded to Oriana, which was again at the konsole: isnt right society man, I mean Vulcanu, so I wanted introduce myself. He gave his hand to Terek: "I am warrant officer Petrel, earlier assistant of Lt. jg. Oriana and before she came, I was chef here" he looked around the astrometrics and dont stopped to smile. "But call me plain, simple Petrel" "Pleasure to meet you sir...ehm... Petrel" Corrected Terek himself as he was not used to call supperior officers by their names. "And please call me Terek. As I've just told to Lt.JG Oriana Weranis is a personal name and Bajorans are not using them very often" He asked with a little smile. "Allright then, Terek. What would you say to lunch or dinner in the messhall? I will introdukce you to some people from science. And some nice girls on board," Petrel smiled quizzical. But behind his smile he thought {Let's see, if you couldn't be another barrier between me and Oriana, like this .. Guzman.} {An Introduction to some other people on the ship.... After all why not. It should be a good chance to finally remember some names :) } Smiled Terek for himself because he was aware of his incapability of remembering new names. "Good, thanks for invitation. I gladly accept. So when you'll go, just let me know and I'll be there." He paused for a while. "But now I think we should get back to work or Lt.JG Oriana will kill us with a bare look. " He added as a joke because Oriana was looking at them with as neutral face as was Vulcan able to perform. "Oh just one more think. When I'll finish reprogramming last sensor subroutine it'll be necessary to tune out whole sensor system. If it would be possible I'd like to participate on this as for me to get some more experience in this." He waited for Petrel's reply and then he returned to his station and began to reprogram last part of the recognition system. Petrel smiled. He smiled often. Of course, Terek. Then he cowered to Terek: And dont worry about our chef. She is like the dog: she is yaping, but dont biting. Then he started to work with Terek again and at astrometrics was heart the consoles only again. ======= End of Log ======= Lt. jg.
