Part Two.....
===== Sickbay =====
After a few minutes when he left cargo bay, Terek arrived onto sickbay.
He looked around. Lights were dim and sickbay was quiet. Only in the office of the doctor was there a light so he approached circular room and knocked on the glass when he saw the doctor working on something on the computer.
He realized that this time he felt no unpleasant feeling at all. Perhaps it would be of that he isn't here as a patient, but he more hoped that his phobia is finally beginning to withdraw.
"Hello Doctor. I'm here to help you with that chromatograph as you wished...." he said and waited for Rangi to recognize he's come, because she looked very immersed into the work.
"Cadet " Rangi switched off the desktop terminal and stood up."Thankyou for coming so late. It could have waited until the morning."
She gave him a small smile as she left her desk, her face showing she was probably as tired as he was.
"No problem doctor.." said Terek with a smile "Where do you want me to put that gizmo you've ordered?"
She smiled at the term he used and pointed in the direction of Lab 2.
"It needs to be set up in the lab" she explained stepping out of the office and walking in the direction she had pointed.
" I was really pleased when Oriana said she would fit us up with one of our own."
"She is really kind... " replied Terek but then he realized something...."if you can say it about a Vulcan" added and followed Rangi to the Med Lab. He waited for her to show him a proper place and then he picked up his padd adjusted coordinates and beamed device to the one corner of the room.
A familiar blue haze brightened in the corner then died away to reveal a metal container.
"So doctor how was your day today?" he asked when he approached a box and begun to unpack the apparatus.
"Terribly busy!" Rangi said. "There seems to have been so many minor accidents occurring."
Rangi stepped nearer and glancing at Terek asked hopefully. "Would you have time to assemble it now? Would it take very long? I can help you if you like."
As Terek unpacked the device it showed itself in the whole beauty.
Standard access console with input screen and one big display for the results of the tests.
On the right side there was a samples holder and on the top of the device was a main scanner. A large glass dome with hole underneath it for the samples. Dome itself was also equiped with emitors that was responsible for the chromatography itself.
Terek saw that Rangi came closer to him and looked quite curiously at him and then asked to help him...
"Thanks Doctor it would be nice of you. Instalation of the device won't take too long but we will need to calibrate it so we'll need some tissue samples to try analyze them. Do you have any? Best it would be if those samples would be already tested so that we might corelate the results."
"Yes I do." Rangi replied and stepped around him."There are plenty here...just a moment."
She walked to the far side of the lab where neat stacks of small oblong cases were arranged on shelves.
She browsed along them selecting first one then another and finally returned with five cases.
"These are all recent. she said "...and we have the results...shall we use these?"
Meanwhile Rangi went looking for the samples, Terek unpacked device completely and put the container aside so they would have a better access to it. He also connected it to the power and ODN network and in the time when Rangi returned with samples he was prepared to tur it on.
"Yes, those samples would do..." he said when he saw that Doctor bring him wide spectrum of materials to try. "I just wanted to turn it on and check main programming and if it is not damaged."
And with this he tapped few commands on the solid buttons on the side of the device. Immediately displays went on. So Terek tapped a command to commence autodiagnostics and also said:
"Computer run diagnostics of the newly installed spectral chromatograph and check its main programming."
Computer bleeped in reply and so Terek took a closer look on the samples Rangi brought. But he wasn't a biologist so he hardly recognized them, but he remembered some that he saw in the academy.
"This is a blood plasma right?" he asked Rangi pointing onto the one phial containing a pale liquid.
Rangi nodded. "Yes that's right.....and it goes there?" She looked questioningly at the young Bajoran adding "Perhaps you'd better try the first ones...just to make sure."
Terek pleased that he remembered looked at the display that showed that self diagnostics was completed so he showed results.
"No abnormalities detected, all systems functioning within normal parameters, interlink with ship's database seems also OK" he mumbled for himself, then he realized that Rangi asked him ...
"Sorry Doctor. I'm little out of mind today. But yes, it goes here.... And since the diagnostic is completed we can try it. Meanwhile the computer will finish the other one."
And with this he took the first sample from Rangi and put it into the sample holder under the glass and tapped a few commands to start analysis so that Rangi could see how to do it.
Fascinated, Rangi watched the process run.The results, when they appeared, were detailed. She smiled at Terek, clearly delighted with the new equipment.
"Now I'll try one ok?"
She placed the next sample into the holder, pressed two buttons and said " Ohhhh."
Pausing to rethink, she began again and this time the sample was accepted and the process began again. "Got it!" Rangi said with a satisfied smile.
Terek watched as Rangi quickly managed to learn how to use the device and smiled in return as she smiled to him.
"You are good. You didn't need me here at all, you could do it yourself." said Terek with little laugh. And in this moment computer reported completion of the analysis.
[Analysis complete. All systems functioning within given parameters. Interlink with ship stable.] Reported computer so Terek nodded a little and with the help of the Doctor they finnished analyzing those samples.
When he mostly watched Rangi during the job, because she needed to learn how to operate it properly. So he at least checked results done before and the new one, to check for the irregularities.
"So far, so good" said with satisfaction at the fourth sample.
"May I ask you a personal question? When did you come aboard the Chimera?" he said in order to get know the Doctor a little bit more.
Looking at him a little surprised by the question, she smiled and taking the last sample from the holder replied..
" Ummm...its about three years I think...I was an AMO on Starbase 742 before that. I came here as CMO...and I enjoy it..mostly"
Her smile widened. "What about you?" she asked. "What brings you to our fair ship?"
"Well I specialized onto science on the academy in my last two years. I studied all those anomilies that one can encounter out there, but I couldn't see it. So when this chance came... I couldn't resist. I applied for the possition and made it through the concourse. And so I'm here.
Have no idea what might Oriana want me to do, hoping that I won't tie people here up and that I'll be of some use here...."
He gave a little sniff..."And also my parents are proud I'm here at this position. I hope I won't let them down..."
Rangi studied his face."I'm sure you wont." she replied quietly and when he met her gaze her lips formed a smile.
"Thank you for bringing this." she said turning back to the chromatograph and after a second or two found the button to turn it off. "I'm about done here for tonight....and your shift must surely have ended too?"
"Thank you for your words..."he said quietly and turned red. "I didn't want to bother you with this..." returned her smile and then bended again to the console to check last result.
It also was good so when he looked up, he saw that Rangi was turning the chromatograph off ....
"Yes it had, but it is no problem. I'm glad I could help...." he paused for a while "So good night and if you'll have any problems with this, just let me know...." and with this he turned to go out of the sickbay and finally to the bed, but before he left, he said.
"Hope I'll meet you also anywhere else than on the sickbay..." he said with grin, thinking that it would be good to make some friends around here.
He also hoped that that invitation to lunch from Petrel will help him to establish some new relationships.
"Goodnight" Rangi watched him begin to walk away then turned back to the chromatograph. She laid her hand on top of it and patted it gently. " Very nice indeed." she murmured.
Sickbay was quiet when she left the lab. Nurse Robinson and Maikai were on duty.
"Goodnight" she said to them and made her way, as Ra'nar had done, towards her own supper and rest.."
