= Samantha's Quarters =
The room was quiet and dark when Samantha opened her eyes. Her intended
short nap had turned into a few hours, but when she sat up on the bed she
felt rested and refreshed. The first thing she thought about was Dr Summers
and that she needed to go and get her physical done. Getting up, she put on
her uniform jacket and went into the bathroom to adjust her hair by the
mirror. After that was done, she headed out to Sickbay.
= Sickbay =
{Peace at last} Rangi thought and sighed a long sigh. Sickbay was almost
full. There was one biobed free not including the main surgical bed. AMO
Gansenn was checking each patient in turn and Nurse Robinson was engaged in
tidying trolleys.
Rangi glanced at the wall chrono and saw that it was late. The idea of a
warm bath, small supper and comfortable bed was suddenly very appealing.
{I'll call Shane and ...oh... the errant 'mission specialist'!....what does
'she want?}
"Commander..." Rangi walked towards Samantha. "Here at last" she said
Samantha extended her hand towards Rangi. "I'm sorry to have kept you
waiting, Doctor. All the modifications and preparations for departure have
kept me quite busy. I was wondering if you had time for that overdue
physical?"
{Now!?} Rangi could barely hide the surprise. Three appointments for a
routine check had been cancelled, two at short notice.Thinking that she had
better sieze the chance, but seeing her plans evaporating, Rangi said
"Well..yes ofcourse...please, come this way."
Moving over to the biobed Rangi pointed to, Samantha sat down. "Have you
been on the Chimera long?" she asked, attempting to make idle conversation.
"For while now." Rangi replied, licking up a padd and tapping in commands.
"I was on Aurora previously." She gave the young woman a polite smile." The
modifications are causing..well...a few problems."
Samantha didn't know what to say at first. She kept feeling like she had to
take all the blame these damn modifications were causing. In actual fact,
all she was doing was overseeing the installations; she didn't design the
prototype technologies. However, she knew more than she let on. The
Chimera's crew were being kept in the dark, and for that she felt guilty.
But that was what being an SSF officer was about sometime. Cloak and dagger
was the name of the game.
"Yes, they are," Samantha agreed, thinking it best to be honest about the
things she could be honest about. "Unfortunately, that's why it's still a
prototype. Only through trial and error can it be perfected."
"Well I rather wish that Chimera wasnt being used for the trial " Rangi
replied, her tone decidely chilly. " There have been too many errors...at
least too many accidents resulting from the instalations.Shall we begin?"
Rangi switched on a tricorder.
Samantha nodded, thinking it wise not to reply. She didn't really know what
to say to lighten the CMO's mood.
Rangi knew she was being unfair. {It probably isnt her fault..after
all...she doesnt design these things...does she?} She glanced at Samantha.
"Have you any recent medical problems I need to know about?" she asked in a
slightly warmer tone.
"I was recently on an undercover assignment. The medical officer injected me
with a drug that altered my skin, intentionally creating the illusion that I
looked like a Trill. The drug took longer than expected to wear off, but now
all the spots have faded. I recall having some skin irritation while the
drug was in effect, but so far I haven't experienced any after effects,"
Samantha explained.
"Mmmmmm...." Rangi studied the scan and after a few seconds looked at
Samantha.
"I've had quite a bit of experience with that myself " she said and gave a
small smile. "On a recent mission, a number of crew were cosmetically
altered to resemble Romulans. " she explained "..including the XO"
"I see," Samantha replied, slightly curious as to why they would be
disguised as Romulans, but knowing much better than to ask. "Did they
experience any side-effects?"
"No....nothing too drastic. Nausea in some cases but the surgery was
straightforward."
Deciding she must make an effort as one officer to another Rangi said "This
is a small ship ofcourse but I hope you'll be comfortable and soon get to
know people."
Even though the medical officer was probably only being polite, Samantha
appreciated the friendly gesture. This mission could get very lonely if she
didn't get along with at least some of her colleagues. "I am fonder of
smaller ships than larger ones," she confessed. "I served as executive
officer of a Sovereign class for a short time, but the ship was simply too
big to get to know anyone on a personal level. Luckily I already know some
people on the Chimera. I've served with the chef before, and I also know the
new helmsman."
"Really?" Rangi asked noting something onto a medpadd. " I havent met him
yet...apart from at the briefing. As for the chef...he's a great asset."
Rangi smiled.
"Oh yes, his cooking is delicious. You should taste his muffins." Samantha
briefly recalled an incident on the Archer with certain blueberry muffins
that made her quite high. Luckily that only happened once and didn't scare
her off of trying the muffins again.
The examination continued as all such routine one did. Nothing was
discovered to cause any comment or concern and eventually Rangi said.
"Right..thats all we do! You're fit to serve aboard Chimera!" Her tone was
friendly enough and she set the tricorder aside and switched off the biobed
displays.
"Thank you, Commander," Samantha said, getting up from the biobed. "Once
again I apologise to have you kept you waiting."
"Thankyou for making time to come." Rangi replied and then added. "When you
have a free half an hour, I could introduce you to some of the crew...the
councellor Athena Wellington perhaps?"
"I'll do so," Samantha nodded, then headed out of Sickbay. That didn't go
too bad, she thought to herself as she walked down the corridor.
Rangi picked up the medpadd and completed the report. {It's strange} she
thought { ...but I'm not sure what to make of her...time will tell}
