Jack was out in the main complex of the ODA, there wasn't a lot going on
at the moment because most of the guys were off preparing for training
exercises, and he'd give Cortez the rest of the day off for sorting him
out with the contraband that they had taken from his quarters. He rifled
through the box and found the bottle of romulan ale that they had found
in the desk in his quarters. He had to hand it to Cortez for finding it,
he also had to hand it to him for having the balls to have a couple of
glasses out of it.
He thought about pulling Cortez up on it but he guessed it was the least
that he could do. That didn't mean for one moment that he 'owed' Cortez
anything, or that he'd go easier on him in future. Everyone was the same
under him, everyone took the same amount of shit. Leaning back he popped
the lid and poured himself a bit into his cup and then slipped it into
the draw.
Grabbing a PADD that Williams had given him on the training his thoughts
shifted to Williams' smooth transition back to third in command of the
unit with the Arrival of Second Lieutenant Scott to the group. He still
didn't know much about the man, he'd read his file sure, and a few flags
had been raised when he read the mans physical profile, but the guy
could see him clear enough when he reported in for duty, and he figured
he'd see how handy the guy was with a rifle during the training.
Ironically at the same time as him thinking about his new Assistant
Commander, Scott had the same idea and rang the chime to Jack's office.
Letting it wait for a moment he downed the cup of Romulan ale and then
called out for him to come in.
Standing too close to the door, Jason took a slight step back as it
parted and focused on the man opposite. "Major." He spoke, stepping over
the threshold. Not needing to glance around the office as he'd seen it
previously, Jason approached the desk and stood firmly, placing his
hands behind his back.
"Lieutenant" Jack wiped his mouth off and stood. "At ease." he extended
his hand to meet the guys. "Its a good thing you came by actually, I was
just thinking that we should meet properly, especially if were going to
be running the rabble out there" he tilted his head to gesture towards
the main offices and then sat down, motioning for the man to do the same.
Listening to the man, Jason shook his hand firmly and sat behind the
open end of the desk. Adjusting the dimly tinted glasses across his
nose, he crossed his arms and leant back. "Don't know what you wanted
Major. I just came by 'cause i thought i'd get to know more about you
than your name."
"Didn't want anything except to size you up, Lieutenant. Everyone under
me is another layer between me getting shot and achieving whatever
mission objectives are set, I just want to get the level of you, I'll
save the candle lit dinner for another time and cut to the main question
on my mind." he paced the office slowly, settling at the window with his
back to Scott. "I've read your file, yada, yada, you've been deemed
physically fit for duty, but frankly...your eyes trouble me, I want to
know if you can hack it in this group?"
Shock, Jason didn't see 'that one' coming. Everyone he'd come across
since the accident had asked him about his eyes. If it wasn't "What's up
with your eyes?" it was something more radiculous such as, "Cool eyes."
Or something equally mindless and stupid. At least this time - Scott
considered - the man had a real reason for asking him about the
disability; although Jason didn't consider it a disability himself.
"Put it this way Major," Jason began in his naturally nonchalent, almost
'bored with the same topic' tone, "you can ask for me to be reassigned,
or you can see if i get you shot on the mission..." With that, he lifted
the glasses from his nose and watched the back of Walsh through ivory
white pupils. "It's up to you, Major." He concluded, standing from the
chair and crossing his arms; not in a show of strength or defiance, but
in a way that pointed out the reality of the situation. Jason was
definately a 'that's how it is' man.
"Ok Lieutenant, I'll give you a shot. I'll make myself clear though,
because I do it for everyone the first time, and I don't expect any more
'trouble' later on. First of all this is my house. My rules, my game, My
word is final. I don't care if you've heard that a thousand times
before, if you think I'm a prick, even if you think you're better than
me. You're a marine, and that's a good drawing background so I don't
expect we'll have any trouble there." Jack turned noticing that the man
was still standing with his arms crossed.
Moving back over to his desk he sat down and put his feet up.
"Questions? I'll try to consider them..."
Not able to see the look on the Major's face, Jason re-settled the
glasses upon the bridge of his nose and watched over his profile with a
raised eyebrow. "Nothing yet." He finally quipped, before turning to
leave the office. Walsh had stated his position, and done the usual 'Ma
crib' speach, and so the meeting was over in Jason's 'altered' eyes. "I
assume i'm dismissed?" He queried however, just to be sure.
Jack smriked, the man was cheeky, he'd give him that. "For now" Jack
shot the man a toothy grin and mocked him a salute."Oh and Lieutenant,
can you check up on Private Ra'nar, hes been involved in some interesting
activities as of recent.
