*** Cargo Bay 3 * USS Chimera ***
Every thing was silent ....ready...prepared. There was an almost tangible state of 'waiting' in the air.
"I wish we had more than one main surgical bed" Rangi said quietly.
Scott Fisher, standing beside her thought { I wish we had a larger sickbay!!} and put his thought into words.
Rangi looked up at him.
"Yes...so do I...its not the best place to treat critically injured men is it?"
She sighed, looking around the cargo bay, at the lines of secondary biobeds and the medcarts beside them. The hyposprays and neat boxes of medication, sedatives, resusitives, analgiesics, the tricorders and other tools made ready for use.
Lt Fosters message from the Bridge had come midway in the preparations of transforming the cargo bay into an emergency sickbay.
"Already in hand" she'd replied.
The preceding evening, she'd read through the information on grasshoppers and had re read again all that was available about the X'chi. She had mixed the facts in her mind, added the results of flame throwers for good measure and had reached horrible conclusions.
"O.k then? " Scott asked, breaking into her reverie. "I think we're done for now?"
"Yes....its fine."
They walked to the exit, the door sliding open at their approach and closing after them as they passed into the corridor beyond.
"You're worried about this mission?" Scott asked as they started their journey back to the lifts.
"Well...apprehensive certainly." Rangi replied."I cant help but get the feeling that it's all been a bit rushed....the modifications I mean."
She didnt add that Lynchs explanation of his 'feelings' had bothered her too.She had no rapport with engines of any type but understood that most engineers had an inexplicable ability to sense when something was not right, 'tweaking' and 'tuneing' for hours until they were convinced the ship was 'happy'.
Lynch hadnt been happy, that was more than certain and Rangi wondered again that the General had dismissed her own request to delay things when sickbay had been filled almost to overflow with injured engineers.
The DCEO had shot out of sickbay like a whippet released from a trap when Rangi had said he could go.She meant to question him further on his supply of Delectovine...when time permitted it.
"Well things are running at 100% now apparantly" Scott said and Rangi nodded.
{Lynch found the problem then?} she wondered but knew he hadnt. Her father, a weapons specialist, had often told her that nothing ever ran at full spec. There was always a slight 'something' that prevented it. 'The Gremlins Hideaway' he used to call it.
They came to the turbolift.
Scott stiffled a yawn.
"Bedtime Mr Fisher" Rangi said briskly.
"Too right." Scott replied with a grin and the door slid open. They went inside and requested their destinations...one for sickbay...one for his quarters.
