Sean was in a bad mood. He had been forced to spend 24 hours unconscious in
Sickbay, watched by the vigilant eyes of the entire Medical crew. Sean
didn't know what hurt him most, the fact that Summers could take him out
that easily, or that he had lost an entire day, when time seemed to be such
a precious good at that moment.
Thankfully, no serious events had happened during his absence. A few minor
things, not unexpected nor even close to worrying, but all in all, the ship
was working at peak efficiency, as the sensors indicated. They had even
managed a better time to the march then the one estimated, which bugged him
even more. It still wasn't right, no ship could be working at this level. In
the end, even *if* the sensor readings were right, which he doubted, the
strain to the engines would be in the end too much for the old lady to take.
Something was about to happen, Sean was almost certain on that.
For a moment he put aside these thoughts. Right now, he had a very pleasant
task to perform, a task that he felt was more then due and more then
deserved.
"Ensign Rodgers, get your ass into my office. NOW" he barked into the comm
and grinned evilly, thinking of Ricks reaction to this call.
Rick had been working with a couple of crewmen on the navigational
deflectors, performing a detailed scan to make certain that nothing was
wrong, even though the computer systems registered that everything was all
right.
When the call came, Rick was startled. He was unaware that McTaggert had
been released from sickbay. Since the call seemed urgent, Rick wasted no
time telling the others to take a short break.
"On my way, sir," Rick had said as he left the work area, pulling himself
out of the jeffries tube and made for the nearest turbolift.
During the short ride to Deck 11, Rick wondered what else was wrong. The
tone in McTaggert's voice registered that something had to have gone astray.
Then again, maybe Rick did something wrong and he didn't know about it. As
the lift deposited him on Deck 11, he quickly made his way to main
engineering. The past couple of days went through his head as he tried to
figure what he could've screwed up.
Nothing came to mind as he walked up to the CEO's office and hit the chime.
He entered and stood in front of McTaggert's desk.
"Sir, reporting as ordered," Rick said with a little confusion and a slight
bit of concern.
"Was about time, Mr. Rodgers" grumbled Sean and stood up.
"Ensign Rodgers" he then started. "You know we are going to perform a
full scan on the ships systems as soon as we drop out of warp. Quayles
scans on the Core have brought up nothing, but I understand that there
can't be much of a result as long as huge chunks of the core are not
accessible during high warp travel."
Sean paced back and forth in front of Rick.
"I'm not sure if you're up to it tho. I've been watching you, Rodgers.
Watching you closely. I had hopes you would develop a bit under my
watch, but sadly enough..." Sean shrugged and took deep breath,
watching Ricks reaction maliciously. He opened the door and stepped
out of the office, calling the present engineering crew, which formed
up in front of him and Rodgers.
Rick was just puzzled. His first thought was that he was going to get chewed
out in front of the others, but why?
Sean then turned back to Rodgers.
"... sadly enough, you've been doing even better then expected." Sean
face turned into a grin, as he stopped in front of Rodgers. "which gives me
the great pleasure of telling you, that from this moment on, for performing
your duty above and beyond expectations, and being a good engineer and mate,
you will be given the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade, with all the
priviledges and responsibilities that come with it. Congratulations Lt.
Rodgers." he placed the pip on Ricks collar, stood back and saluted. Then he
offered his hand to Rick with the words, "and forget the Sir. The names
Sean" with a friendly smile.
Rick stood there speechless. After a short pause, he finally managed to say,
“Uh, thank you, sir ... I mean Sean.”
As the rest of the engineering crew approached Rick to congratulate him, the
pulsation of the warp core changed, as the ship finally reached it's
destination. A visible thrill caught on the Engineering
crew, as they knew the hard work would start soon.
Sean grinned. Now he would find out what was going on. He turned to Rodgers.
"By the way, Rick. Beta Team is yours. Show me you can handle it, and
I'll be able to place another pip on that collar soon."
Suddenly, his commbadge erupted.
"Bridge to Engineering."
+TAPS+ LT. McTaggert here.
"Lieutenant" Shane started, "we've just arrived at the edge of the march and
droped out of warp. You are now free to perform an level 1 diagnostics to
find out where the problem with the efficiency readings are."
+TAPS+ Finally. I'll start at once.
"Lieutenant, please notice that impulse power and sensors have to remain
online and unaffected by the diagnostics and once we will find the Gott we
need to go on with the mission immediately" Shane said in a friendly but
formal tone.
Sean snarled. Goddamn Bridge-headed, bloody Redneck Bastards. How could they
be so full of shit? he raged in his insides.
+TAPS+ Commander! The General promised me a FULL level 1 diagnostics after
the Chimera will be out of warp.
Shane shook his head slighty and said firmly: "Lieutenant, impulse power and
sensors WILL remain online and once Science will find the Gott we WILL move
on. Besides this two facts you are free to do what you think is necessary."
After a moment of 'heavy' silence McTaggert replied:
+TAPS+ Your way Commander. McTaggert out.
Sean swore under his breath, not caring about the whole engineering team
being present. After a few seconds he turned to Rick again.
"Take your team and start with the Computer Core. Quayle will do the Shields
and Deflectors, I will start with Warp Systems. Lets get moving people,
there's a lot to do!" he clapped and grabbed a toolkit.
“Will do,” Rick said, still feeling very surprised at the promotion, so much
so that hiss head was spinning. He hadn’t expected it, nor did he feel he
deserve it. But, there it was. He would now have to simply live up to it.
+tap+ “All engineering beta shift crewmen, this is Ens ... Lieutenant
Rodgers,” Rick said. “Meet me in main engineering in 10 minutes. Rodgers
out.”
