"Jason...Scott.." Rangi murmured quietly to herself, reading the medpadd
in her hand. {Mmm...overdue for checkups...now why is that?} She laid
the padd aside and tapped her combadge +Taps+ Summers to Lt. Scott."
Taking his flak jacket from the table in his quarters, Jason passed his
arms through the sleeve holes and began to buckle the front. He was
planning on visiting the holodeck once more; just to see what else he
could learn of the X'Chi. It was then an unfamiliar female voice came
over the communicator. "Scott here." He called, raising an eyebrow.
"Lieutenant..I'd appreciate your presence in sickbay...at your earliest
convenience please." Rangi said watching Maikai disappear into the lab
with her hands full of cartons. "Any time today would be fine." she
added, wondering if the assistant ODA commander was involved in holodeck
exercises.
Lowering the aforementioned eyebrow, Jason finished clipping the buckles
and leaned over to fasten his boots. "Sure..." he murmured nonchalantly,
"...i'm on my way." Cutting the communique, he stood from the floor and
cricked his neck absently. Drinking the last of his coffee, Scott left
his quarters and made his way to the sickbay in full field uniform.
Rangi prepared for a routine checkup. It didn't take long and while she
waited for the lieutenant to arrive, she read over his medical history
once more.{unable to have any bionic implants...thats not good} she
thought glanced up and saw a tall imposing figure in full battle uniform
standing in the doorway. She walked towards him. "Lt Scott? I'm CMO
Summers.Thank you for coming so promptly"
Not replying verbally, Jason only nodded and looked down on the woman
through black lensed glasses. Raising his head once more, he glanced
over the medical bay beyond as if it was all new to him and stepped forward.
The checkup was straightforward as rangi expected it to be."There's one
last thing." she said finally, turning the main overbed display off.
"I'd like to examine your sight. You can sit up if you like whatever
makes you more comfortable."
{Here we go...} Jason groaned internally. He hadn't said a word since
the check had begun, but now he knew he'd have no choice but to once
again explain his condition, and once again go through the usual set of
questions that all medical - and non-medical - crewman deemed necessary
to ask him. "What about it." He stated flatly as he sat up. It was more
a comment than a question.
"Well, I've read all the notes of course..." she said tapping the
medpadd in her hand "...but I like to carry out my own
examinations...not just read about the crews med history. Do you
object?" She set the padd aside.
Taking off his glasses, Jason lay them on the bed beside his removed
flack jacket and crossed his arms. "Go ahead." He replied, staring the
woman through white eyes.//
Rangi selected a slender torch like instrument from the tray beside her
and turning back to Jason said "Raise your head a little please." She
switched the instrument on and leaned forward holding the tool near his
left eye. After a few seconds she moved angles then straightened up and
adjusted the instrument. She leaned down again and repeated the exercise
to his right eye.
Seeing nothing but solid profiles and dented shadows, Jason continued to
sit quietly letting the Doctor go about her business. She could have had
a scalpel to his eyes for all he knew... but then she didn't seem the
type to take advantage of the situation; he couldn't imagine her
secretly giving the finger in front of him and laughing to herself.
"How's it look?" He finally asked, just in case something was different
- though he knew nothing was.
She gave a small sigh. "It looks exactly as its described." she said,
putting the instrument back in its place."You do need to attend the
recalls though. " she added and reached down for his dark glasses. She
handed them to him. "Research continues all the time and just because
its not possible to improve things for you at the moment...that doesn't
mean there wont come a time when something 'can' be done. Doctor
Ishimara is one of the best men in this field....you know that of
course." She grew silent, uncertain whether he would want to discuss the
subject further.
Jason took the offered glasses and perched them atop his nose once more.
Nobody touched those glasses, not because he felt it a breach of
personal space, but because they just never did. Not even the doctors on
Earth had handed him the lenses, they'd just waved him away and told him
to return when 'science' might be better.
Standing from the bed, he lifted the jacket and began to put it on.
"Yeah, i heard it all before Doc. But until they find something that can
be worth my time, i'll stick with what i have." With that he clipped the
final buckle of the field armour and nodded. "That it?"
"That's all for today..yes." She paused, watching him pull his uniform
straight. "Lieutenant...it is important that you attend recalls where
possible. Dr Ishimara doesn't send them for fun." her tone held a slight
note of disapproval."I know you cant drop everything being ODA and so
on...but things change...progress IS made...even if its slow and small."
She looked away from what she presumed to be a steady gaze from behind
the dark glass.
Picking up the medpadd she said : "Thank you for coming down. You'll be
due back here in six months."
{Progress...} He considered to himself. Recalls weren't the issue, it
was the idea of traveling back to Earth just so the good doctor could
once again inform him of the situation, and perhaps allow him to see a
different shade of black that held him in apprehension. "See you in
six." He finally called, heading out of the sickbay and into the hall
outside.
Rangi watched him walk away. {You are 'so' like him!} she thought and
shocked herself. It had been a long time since she'd thought of Rob
Richards and it surprised her that he should come to mind now. But as
she watched the doors close behind the marine's tall figure, she
couldn't help but see the similarity. Not only in physique but in
manner...the silent brooding manner that had been so much a part of him.
