Rick laid in his bed, trying to catch up on some sleep, but that was easier
said than done. He had tossed and turned, turned his pillow over several
times, and even replicated himself a new pillow. This didn’t have the
desired effect.
He opened his eyes and caught a glimpse of something moving in the darkness
of his quarters.
“Lights,” Rick said as he sat up in his bed.
He didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.
“It must be the lack of sleep,” Rick said as he laid his head back on his
pillow.
As sleep finally overtook him, and his eyes closed once more, he saw
movement again. This time, he just ignored it. But, before he finally fell
to sleep, he thought he saw himself standing at the replicator.
Three hours later, he was awaken by a noise. He shot up in his bed and again
saw nothing strange. After a few moments, Rick decided that he wasn’t going
to be able to get anymore sleep, so he stood and walked over to the
replicator to get a cup of coffee.
Then the feeling of deja vu his him as he was standing at the replicator. He
shrugged it off since using the replicator was something he done at least
three times a day. Still, he looked in the mirror across the room and the
reflection looked familiar.
A half hour later, he was looking at a data padd, going through beta shift’s
duty logs for the next couple of days in the mess hall when the doors
opened, but no entered or left the room. It then opened again as Rick
glanced up to see Ensign Gomez enter.
Gomez nodded at Rick and walked over to the replicator to order something.
Rick paid no more attention as he again began to focus on the padd. A couple
minutes later, he heard the doors whoosh open again and saw ... Gomez enter
...?
Gomez nodded as Rick looked over at the replicator to see if Gomez could see
him standing there.
No one was there.
Like before, though, Gomez walked up to the replicator and ordered a drink.
He then walked to where Rick was sitting.
“Hey, sir,” Hector said, holding a cup as he sat across from Rick.
“I just experience something really strange,” Rick said, a little puzzled.
“Oh,” Hector said, smiling. “Is it more strange than the usual strange, or
just strange.”
Rick put the padd down on the table.
“I saw you enter the room,” Rick said.
“What’s so strange about that?” Hector asked.
“I saw you enter the room about three minutes ago,” Rick said. “Then you
entered again two minutes later.”
“Why would I do that?” Hector asked.
“I don’t know, but I know what I saw,” Rick said. “Maybe this is the early
stages of insanity.”
Hector was no longer smiling as he leaned across the table with his cup in
front of him.
“I don’t know,” Hector said. “Just a few minutes ago, I was talking to
Ensign Krez and he said he thought he saw himself working on the same
conduit that he had been working on less than an hour earlier.”
Rick then thought back to when he was in his quarters. He remembered seeing
himself, then wondered if there was some sort of link.
Before he was able to go deep in thought ...
“Rick, get your ass to the damaged area. Report every five minutes. Take
Gamma team with you. I want power up there yesterday, McTaggert out!"
With that, Rick stood and walked past Hector, but stopped just a couple of
feet behind him.
“What do you know about temporal mechanics?” Rick asked.
“Probably about as much as you,” Hector said. “Then again, if I recall, you
aced basic temporal at the academy. Why?”
“Just wondering,” Rick said as he left the mess hall, a thousand thoughts
going through his mind.
