[Computer Core: Vacancy]
It had been a while now since the team had breached the Gott. After
several attempts to approach the computer core on deck two, they had
been turned back by advancing X'Chi - numbers too vast to compete with.
And so they'd doubled back, and again... and again. But now they were
making progress, two corridors stood between them and the core and
advancing quickly. Then a jerk shook the ship, a violent pull that
grounded them all. It wasn't an explosion, the force and motion seemed
more like a lurching yank forward.
"Great... now what!?" Called Lynch, climbing to his feet once more.
"Quiet." Silenced Jason, looking along the corridor. There was nothing
there; no fires or damage, no X'Chi rampaging towards them.
"An explosion?" Questioned Arnez, also settling on his feet with the
help of the bulkhead.
"No... we'd have felt it more. We're moving..." Spoke up Bretam from the
rear.
"Moving? How can you feel..." But Arnez was cut off by the General.
"When you've been on a Starship as much as i have, you can feel the
slightest of changes." Bretam replied, moving past the men and standing
beside Jason.
"Anomaly?" Question Scott.
"Likely," Bretam answered, "though nothing small. It was big." He
continued, looking thoughtful.
Not sure what else to say, Jason simple nodded then lifted the
flamethrower. "Well, better get out shit together!" Watching as the
other soldiers under him readied their firearms, he waved them forward
and continued towards the core.
It was quiet... for the longest time. Approaching the core access doors,
Lynch quickly moved forward and manually released the latch, giving way
to the large room. The smell was something out of a horror movie -
perhaps an Ed Wood picture - and the sight of the vicinity was to behold.
"What the fu..." Began B'tan, breaking off mid-sentence.
"Yeah, general shit-heap." Scott quipped back, advancing into the room.
It was empty, which was strange. Minutes before signs of multiple
activity had been found, but now nothing. It was as if the X'Chi had
suddenly decided to haul ass and move shop. "General sweep, clear the
room." Scott ordered, the men spreading out around him as Bretam
approached the core. "Lynch, download what you need." Scott called again.
"Aye." The engineering specialist called, moving quickly towards the
core and the General.
Taking his eyes from the two men at the computer console, Jason knelt on
the deck and held the flamethrower tightly. With his free left hand, he
touched a puddle of goop on the floor, and rubbed it between gloved
fingers whispering to himself, "Where did they go..."
